This article outlines an empirical and quantitative study conducted to examine the correlation between certain risk factors and the tendency to reoffend among those arrested for domestic violence. Race, age, education, employment stability, substance abuse and prior criminal history were all considered as independent variables in the study and the dependant variable was whether or not the offender was rearrested for a new violent offense while on probation. 24 studies published before 1990 show that there are 9 offender characteristics that are prevalent in those who reoffend while on probation. Another study outlined in this article was conducted as part of a program evaluation and involved an initial sample of 273 participants who were on probation in Chicago for a felony domestic violence offence. All probationers were males and all had received a sentence of 2 years probation along with a court ordered participation in a 26-week domestic violence-counseling program.

\nviolent offenders. The paper’s main objective is to examine the interventions offered to
\noffenders and explore the possibilities for improvement to these programs by examining
\nconsistent program logic, empirical evidence and what has been learned from other
\noffender rehabilitation programs. The authors laud the Deluth Program Model that they
\nfeel has been very influential in other intervention programs. The authors explore the
\ndifferent programs relating to domestic violence and the controversy and criticism
\nsurrounding treatment for offenders, mainly the lack of empirical evidence supporting a
\nreduction in recidivism that correlates to the participation in intervention programs. Some
\ncritics also feel that the program is taking funds away from the programs designed to help
\nthe victims.

\nstudy included three different psychological concepts, which are schemata, attitudes and
\nattributions to define the study participants’ cognition in relation to violence against their
\nspouse and/or children. The study found that participants more easily recognized physical
\naggression as opposed to psychological aggression. Violence against the female spouse
\nand violence against the children seemed to be closely related along with the offender’s
\nconception of such violence.

The authors attempt to discover the effectiveness of a community based rehabilitation program designed to lower recidivism rates amongst domestic violence offenders in the UK. The 86 participants completed six psychometric tests before beginning the program. They were tracked over an 11-month post-treatment time period wherein 21% reoffended. The data on the reoffending was obtained from police records and by family protection reports. The method used for this study was a quasi-experimental design. The participants were court mandated to complete the program. The average age was 35 years. The study found that the program did little to reduce recidivism rates but did identify clear commonalities between those who had reoffended

\nMinneapolis Intervention Project (MIP) The 358 perpetrators participating were from
\nthree different groups, those who had not been arrested, those who had been arrested and
\nwere court mandated to participate and those who were arrested but not court mandated
\nto participate. Other key agencies involved in the MIP were the police, prosecutors,
\njudges, probation officers and victim advocates. Limitations in this study came from the
\nvictims themselves who fail to report offences against them due to fear of the batterer
\nwhom they were living with. Recidivism was to be tracked at 6 and 12 months after the
\ninitial incident. 66% of the participants were dropped at the start because follow-up
\ninterview data with the victims was not available.
