            "abstractNote": "Modern high-speed networks have evolved from relatively static networks to highly adaptive networks facilitating dynamic reconfiguration. This evolution has influenced all levels of network design and management, introducing increased programmability and configuration flexibility. This influence has extended from the lowest level of physical hardware interfaces to the highest level of network management by software. A key representative of this evolution is the emergence of software-defined networking (SDN). In this paper, we review the current state of the art in reconfigurable network systems, covering hardware reconfiguration, SDN, and the interplay between them. We take a top-down approach, starting with a tutorial on software-defined networks. We then continue to discuss programming languages as the linking element between different levels of software and hardware in the network. We review electronic switching systems, highlighting programmability and reconfiguration aspects, and describe the trends in reconfigurable network elements. Finally, we describe the state of the art in the integration of photonic transceiver and switching elements with electronic technologies, and consider the implications for SDN and reconfigurable network systems.",

            "abstractNote": "OpenFlow is currently the most commonly deployed Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology. SDN consists of decoupling the control and data planes of a network. A software-based controller is responsible for managing the forwarding information of one or more switches; the hardware only handles the forwarding of traffic according to the rules set by the controller. OpenFlow is an SDN technology proposed to standardize the way that a controller communicates with network devices in an SDN architecture. It was proposed to enable researchers to test new ideas in a production environment. OpenFlow provides a specification to migrate the control logic from a switch into the controller. It also defines a protocol for the communication between the controller and the switches. As discussed in this survey paper, OpenFlow-based architectures have specific capabilities that can be exploited by researchers to experiment with new ideas and test novel applications. These capabilities include software-based traffic analysis, centralized control, dynamic updating of forwarding rules and flow abstraction. OpenFlow-based applications have been proposed to ease the configuration of a network, to simplify network management and to add security features, to virtualize networks and data centers and to deploy mobile systems. These applications run on top of networking operating systems such as Nox, Beacon, Maestro, Floodlight, Trema or Node.Flow. Larger scale OpenFlow infrastructures have been deployed to allow the research community to run experiments and test their applications in more realistic scenarios. Also, studies have measured the performance of OpenFlow networks through modelling and experimentation. We describe the challenges facing the large scale deployment of OpenFlow-based networks and we discuss future research directions of this technology.",

            "abstractNote": "Cloud services are exploding, and organizations are converging their data centers in order to take advantage of the predictability, continuity, and quality of service delivered by virtualization technologies. In parallel, energy-efficient and high-security networking is of increasing importance. Network operators, and service and product providers require a new network solution to efficiently tackle the increasing demands of this changing network landscape. Software-defined networking has emerged as an efficient network technology capable of supporting the dynamic nature of future network functions and intelligent applications while lowering operating costs through simplified hardware, software, and management. In this article, the question of how to achieve a successful carrier grade network with software-defined networking is raised. Specific focus is placed on the challenges of network performance, scalability, security, and interoperability with the proposal of potential solution directions.",

            "abstractNote": "The recent initiative of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) aims to deliver any data- plane processing or control-plane function in high volume data centers or network elements to decrease operational cost and increase deployment flexibility. In order to dynamically direct traffic flows between respective network elements, Software Defined Networking (SDN) can be seen as one enabler. In this paper, we focus on mobile core network nodes such as the MME, HSS, S- and P- Gateway as standardized for the LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC). One straightforward solution for a virtualized EPC architecture would be to move all EPC network nodes completely into a data center and handle the data traffic via SDN-enabled switches. However, this solution would keep the conventional monolithic architecture unchanged. A possible split in the EPC functionality between a centralized data center and operator's transport network elements could be needed to provide the desired flexibility, performance and TCO reduction. Therefore, we have analyzed the EPC nodes and classified their functions according to their impact on data-plane and control-plane processing. We propose a mapping for these functions on four alternative deployment frameworks based on SDN and OpenFlow (OF). In addition, we investigate the current OF implementation's capability to realize basic core operations such as QoS, data classification, tunneling and charging. Our analysis shows that functions, which involve high data packet processing such as tunneling, have more potential to be kept on the data-plane network element, i.e. realized by an OpenFlow Switch. We argue for an enhanced OF network element NE+, which contains additional network functions next to the basic OpenFlow protocol.",

            "abstractNote": "Internet core protocols were designed in the seventies and after four decades and a huge success, most of that initial design is still in place. As stated by Moore's law, current digital devices offer a huge processing capacity when compared to the computational resources of the early Internet. Moreover, physical links, wired or not, offer great connectivity and high throughput capacity. New applications bring a new set of requirements that the Internet is not able to satisfy in a proper way. The Internet architecture must be reviewed and several research groups are engaged in this design. Software Defined Networking (SDN), currently materialized in OpenFlow, represents an extraordinary opportunity to rethink computer networks, enabling the design and deployment of a future Internet. This paper presents SDN based technologies available, describes some research initiatives and discusses how the research community can use them to shape future Internet architecture.",

To operate, maintain, and secure a communication network, network operators must grapple with low-level vendor-specific configuration to implement complex high-level network policies. Despite many previous proposals to make networks easier to manage, many solutions to network management problems amount to stop-gap solutions because of the difficulty of changing the underlying infrastructure. The rigidity of the underlying infrastructure presents few possibilities for innovation or improvement, since network devices have generally been closed, proprietary, and vertically integrated. A new paradigm in networking, software defined networking (SDN), advocates separating the data plane and the control plane, making network switches in the data plane simple packet forwarding devices and leaving a logically centralized software program to control the behavior of the entire network. SDN introduces new possibilities for network management and configuration methods. In this article, we identify problems with the current state-of-the-art network configuration and management mechanisms and introduce mechanisms to improve various aspects of network management. We focus on three problems in network management: enabling frequent changes to network conditions and state, providing support for network configuration in a highlevel language, and providing better visibility and control over tasks for performing network diagnosis and troubleshooting. The technologies we describe enable network operators to implement a wide range of network policies in a high-level policy language and easily determine sources of performance problems. In addition to the systems themselves, we describe various prototype deployments in campus and home networks that demonstrate how SDN can improve common network management tasks.",

            "abstractNote": "Modern high-speed networks have evolved from relatively static networks to highly adaptive networks facilitating dynamic reconfiguration. This evolution has influenced all levels of network design and management, introducing increased programmability and configuration flexibility. This influence has extended from the lowest level of physical hardware interfaces to the highest level of network management by software. A key representative of this evolution is the emergence of software-defined networking (SDN). In this paper, we review the current state of the art in reconfigurable network systems, covering hardware reconfiguration, SDN, and the interplay between them. We take a top-down approach, starting with a tutorial on software-defined networks. We then continue to discuss programming languages as the linking element between different levels of software and hardware in the network. We review electronic switching systems, highlighting programmability and reconfiguration aspects, and describe the trends in reconfigurable network elements. Finally, we describe the state of the art in the integration of photonic transceiver and switching elements with electronic technologies, and consider the implications for SDN and reconfigurable network systems.",

            "abstractNote": "Carrier network service infrastructures are becoming increasingly complex since thousands of service-specific hardware-based network nodes are implemented to support a wide variety of network services. This has resulted in critically high increases in the maintenance costs to ensure service quality for network services and the deployment costs for new network services. Addressing these problems requires new ways to simplify and automate operations and infrastructures. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN)/OpenFlow are attractive concepts that address these problems. In this study we present the requirements and a basic design of a flexible and elastic network service infrastructure with NFV and SDN/OpenFlow. We also introduce a virtual BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server) prototype using Intel DPDK as high performance throughputs.",

            "abstractNote": "Capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) have been practical concerns for telecommunication companies, and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) has attracted significant attention in recent years. However, the NFV Infrastructure (NFVI) includes a wide variety of resource types and stakeholders. Hence, there is still a need for the existing resource scheduling approaches, but they are no longer sufficient. In this paper, we propose a Multi-objective Resource Scheduling Algorithm (MORSA) to optimize the NFVI resources. In the development of the MORSA, we designed a plug-in architecture to satisfy various requirements related to NFVI resources and stakeholder policies. The MORSA allows the NFVI Resource Scheduler to optimize simultaneously the combination of possibly conflicting objectives with multifaceted constraints in complex real world situations. Evaluation results show that the MORSA obtains approximate solutions among conflicting objectives in a reasonable computation time.",

            "abstractNote": "As mobile network users look forward to the connectivity speeds of 5G networks, service providers are facing challenges in complying with connectivity demands without substantial financial investments. Network function virtualization (NFV) is introduced as a new methodology that offers a way out of this bottleneck. NFV is poised to change the core structure of telecommunications infrastructure to be more cost-efficient. In this article, we introduce an NFV framework, and discuss the challenges and requirements of its use in mobile networks. In particular, an NFV framework in the virtual environment is proposed. Moreover, in order to reduce signaling traffic and achieve better performance, this article proposes a criterion to bundle multiple functions of a virtualized evolved packet core in a single physical device or a group of adjacent devices. The analysis shows that the proposed grouping can reduce the network control traffic by 70 percent.",
