The number of citation management software packages has increased in recent years and therefore choosing an appropriate one has become a challenge for researchers. Scholars always explore the features of an appropriate RMS prior to making an investment to invest in one. Hence, the purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the prominent features in the selection of appropriate reference management software based on an extensive literature review and further to validate this through experts’ opinions. We have utilized the valuable opinions of experts to develop a hierarchical model based on the interpretive structural modelling approach to demonstrate the contextual interrelationship among these factors. Furthermore, the Matrice d’Impacts Croisées-Multiplication Appliquée à un Classement analysis approach has been utilized to classify the identified features based on their dependences and driving power, and to validate the developed interpretive structural modelling-based conceptual model. The developed model in this study can help reference management software developers to understand the correlations among the identified features and their interdependences to further enhance the quality of their products. Many reference managers now have integrated PDF viewers (sometimes with annotation tools) for scholarly papers. Reference managers increasingly have to handle other forms of scholarly content, from presentation slides to blog posts and web links. Open source software and open standards play a growing role in reference management. Findings - The majority of ARL libraries provide support for one or more of these applications with the largest percentage, 42% providing support for both applications, The US privately supported colleges and universities were more likely to have licensed and application and to provide support for both applications. A large percentage of libraries provide instruction on the supported application and instructional materials. The libraries supporting RefWorks were more likely to use the instructional materials provided by RefWorks where more libraries produced supporting materials for EndNote in-house. Practical implications - Examples of extemporary libraries supporting EndNote, RefWorks and both applications are provided along with other information to aid in the design and or development of support for bibliographic management applications. To test importing and data management features, fourteen references from seven bibliographic databases were imported into each RM, using automated features whenever possible. To test citation accuracy, bibliographies of these references were generated in five different styles. The authors found that RefWorks generated the most accurate citations. The other RMs offered contrasting strengths: CiteULike in simplicity and social networking, Zotero in ease of automated importing, and Mendeley in PDF management. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which authors are using reference management software to produce systematic reviews; identify which programs are used most frequently and rate their ease of use; and assess the degree to which software usage is documented in published studies. METHODS: We reviewed the full text of systematic reviews published in core clinical journals indexed in ACP Journal Club from 2008 to November 2011 to determine the extent to which reference management software usage is reported in published reviews. We surveyed corresponding authors to verify and supplement information in published reports, and gather frequency and ease-of-use data on individual reference management programs. RESULTS: Of the 78 researchers who responded to our survey, 79.5% reported that they had used a reference management software package to prepare their review. Of these, 4.8% reported this usage in their published studies. EndNote, Reference Manager, and RefWorks were the programs of choice for more than 98% of authors who used this software. Comments with respect to ease-of-use issues focused on the integration of this software with other programs and computer interfaces, and the sharing of reference databases among researchers. CONCLUSIONS: Despite underreporting of use, reference management software is frequently adopted by authors of systematic reviews.
