It is a biochemical reaction which progresses with time and temperature, and has the potential to be used in any material capable of sequestering amino acids (e.g. avian eggshell, molluscs, teeth, and bones). AAR is not a numerical dating method, per se; however it can be used for a variety of chronological and paleotemperature applications. Provided there is some independent age control, AAR can be used to improve or extend upon the chronology, or to reconstruct the temperature history at a site. The use of AAR as a dating/paleothermometry tool has been somewhat underutilized by the archaeological community, presumably due to a series of errors made on studies of human bone shortly after the technique was first discovered. Since these early studies, continued exploration of AAR has demonstrated the growing power of the technique for chronological and paleothermometry research in certain sample types, as well as novel applications pertinent to archaeologists and anthropologists. For example, relevant to human behaviour, including burial practices, the use of fire, and the degree of mixing at the site, can be determined using AAR. This paper presents the basic principles behind AAR and a review of the technique as it has been applied to the archaeological record. AAR in some of the biominerals commonly associated with archaeological sites is reviewed, and guidelines for sample collection presented. Our study compared two techniques for measuring and crossdating tree rings using Juniperus virginiana L. (eastern redcedar) as a case study. We used a pseudo 2 × 2 study design comparing the traditional skeleton plot/sliding measuring stage technique to a semi- automatic image analysis program across two technicians. Crossdating was evaluated in COFECHA. Raw measurements of total, earlywood, and latewood widths from the two methods were analyzed using the Verify for Windows program, ANOVA, and correlation matrices. Total ring width and earlywood width were well correlated between techniques and technicians but questionable ring boundaries from image analysis program should be checked under a stereoscope. Juniperus virginiana latewood widths were significantly different between techniques and technicians; therefore, we do not recommend combining latewood measurements from species with limited latewood variability for dendrochronological analysis. A standard definition of the earlywood-latewood boundary that can be replicated across technicians is needed to combine latewood measurements from the sliding measuring stage and image analysis We conduct automated aerial 3D scanning using multi-rotor copters. A joint archaeological and computer vision project was initiated to digitally capture the ruins and excavations of ancient Dedan in Saudi Arabia. The project focused on previous seasons' excavations and the ancient Lihyanite \"Lion Tombs\" carved into the nearby cliff faces. The site was used as a test bed to validate the potential of UAV technology for rapid cultural heritage documentation. By using a combination of non-invasive 3D scanning techniques we can digitally preserve the site as it appears shortly after each season of excavation, document its inevitable decay, and provide objective datasets for future analysis and study. The detection is mainly based on photointerpretation of high-resolution satellite or aerial images. Photointerpretation for archaeological purposes is focused on the identification of crop marks using visible and near infrared (VNIR) spectrum (e.g. vegetation indices) response, which is sensitive to vegetation stress. Detection of such marks is always performed through images of adequate spatial resolution, and therefore this procedure might be problematic in cases when there is a lack of accessibility to such kinds of data. This paper addresses this problem and illustrates an image-based method intended for the detection of crop marks using satellite data of inadequate spatial resolution. The overall methodology consists of seven separate steps. The method needs two areas of interest to be selected in the image, preferably in close proximity to one another. The first area is characterized as the ‘archaeological area under investigation'while the second is a vegetated non-archaeological area. These two areas are simultaneously examined in detail using spectral signatures, soil lines, and their phenological cycle characteristics. Multispectral and hyperspectral instruments mounted on orbiting and sub-orbital platforms have provided new and important information for the discovery, delineation and analysis of archaeological sites worldwide. Since the early 1970s, several of the ten NASA centers have collaborated with archaeologists to refine and validate the use of active and passive remote sensing for archaeological use. The Stennis Space Center (SSC), located in Mississippi USA has been the NASA leader in archaeological research. Together with colleagues from Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), SSC scientists have provided the archaeological community with useful images and sophisticated processing that have pushed the technological frontiers of archaeological research and applications. Successful projects include identifying prehistoric roads in Chaco canyon, identifying sites from the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery exploration, and assessing prehistoric settlement patterns in southeast Louisiana. The Scientific Data Purchase (SDP) stimulated commercial companies to collect archaeological data. At present, NASA formally solicits “space archaeology” proposals through its Earth Science Directorate and continues to assist archaeologists and cultural resource managers in doing their work more efficiently and effectively. This paper focuses on passive remote sensing and does not consider the significant contributions made by NASA active sensors. Accidental discovery of critical sites (e.g. burials) can have very\nsignificant operational impacts. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the National\nAeronautics and Space Administration (JPL/NASA) and Cultural Site Research and\nManagement (CSRM) are partnering to develop the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR)\ndeployed from aerial platforms to find and characterize archaeological sites. Research focused on study of the various kinds of degradation affecting underwater finds and stone materials aged in underwater environment, efficiency evaluation of various surface cleaning methods and study and mixing of protective products with consolidating resins and antimicrobial biocides to be applied to restored underwater finds. Transmitted light optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study surface biofilms and the interactions with samples of different stone materials such as brick, marble and granite immersed in the submarine archaeological area of Crotone (South of Italy). Surface cleaning tests were performed with application of ion exchange resins, EDTA, hydrogen peroxide and ultrasound techniques.
