AB - Natural User Interfaces (NUIs) – systems that use gestures and movement as input for system controls – are becoming prevalent in our society. However, there are major design challenges that make using these interfaces feel "unnatural". In this paper, we present the results of a mixed-methods experiment that compared the usability and intuitive interaction of three different interface designs. Based on our results, we suggest the benefits and limitations of three strategies for creating input-control mappings and share a preliminary list of design implications. Our work contributes to the HCI community by providing guidance on designing NUIs in various applications and contexts.
