"abstractNote": "People are inherently social. Social interaction plays an important and natural role in human behavior. Most computational methods focus on individuals alone rather than in social context. They also require labelled training data. We present an unsupervised approach to discover interpersonal synchrony, referred as to two or more persons preforming common actions in overlapping video frames or segments. For computational efficiency, we develop a branch-and-bound (B&B) approach that affords exhaustive search while guaranteeing a globally optimal solution. The proposed method is entirely general. It takes from two or more videos any multi-dimensional signal that can be represented as a histogram. We derive three novel bounding functions and provide efficient extensions, including multi-synchrony detection and accelerated search, using a warm-start strategy and parallelism. We evaluate the effectiveness of our approach in multiple databases, including human actions using the CMU Mocap dataset [1], spontaneous facial behaviors using group-formation task dataset [37] and parent-infant interaction dataset [28].",

"abstractNote": "This paper describes work on a newly created large-scale interactive theater performance entitled Schwelle (Thresholds). The authors discuss an innovative approach towards the conception, development and implementation of dynamic and responsive audio scenography: a constantly evolving, multi-layered sound design generated by continuous input from a series of distributed wireless sensors deployed both on the body of a performer and placed within the physical stage environment. The paper is divided into conceptual and technological parts. We first describe the project's dramaturgical and conceptual context in order to situate the artistic framework that has guided the technological system design. Specifically, this framework discusses the team's approach in combining techniques from situated computing, theatrical sound design practice and dynamical systems in order to create a new kind of adaptive audio scenographic environment augmented by wireless, distributed sensing for use in live theatrical performance. The goal of this adaptive sound design is to move beyond both existing playback models used in theatre sound as well as the purely human-centered, controller-instrument approach used in much current interactive performance practice.",

"abstractNote": "This paper describes recent work on a large-scale, interactive dance theater performance entitled Schwelle as a platform to pose critical questions around the conception, design and implementation of what is commonly labeled responsive audio environments. The authors first discuss some principal issues in the design of responsive audio environments specifically within the domain of stage performance, addressing existing human-computer interaction paradigms in three key areas: sensing, mapping and data sonification. Next, we explore larger questions of composition in relation to these key areas, suggesting that potential strategies cross three different domains: mapping within algorithmic composition, data sonification techniques, and time-based evolutionary processes emerging from dynamical systems theory. We then examine recent work on Schwelle, which employs real time, distributed sensor data to drive a continuous dynamical system-based composition engine. The project’s conceptual and technical challenges are discussed as well as audience evaluation and feedback from the first presentation in Berlin in February 2007, and the subsequent revisions for the second presentation in Montréal in May 2007. Finally, the paper concludes with a set of issues that may act as a framework for future research focused on compositional strategies for larger scale, distributed, network-based sensor environments.",

"abstractNote": "Based on ten years' experience developing interactive camera/projector systems for public science and culture exhibits, we define a distinct form of augmented reality focused on social interaction: social immersive media. Our work abandons GUI metaphors and builds on the language of cinema, casting users as actors within simulated narrative models. We articulate philosophical goals, design principles, and interaction techniques that create strong emotional responses and social engagement through visceral interaction. We describe approaches to clearly communicate cultural and scientific ideas through the medium. And we demonstrate how practitioners can design interactions that promote specific social behaviors in users.",

Several exhibits of responsive environments, implemented by the author, combining computer graphics, video projection and two-way video communication are described. VIDEOPLACE, an evolving exhibit which defines a conceptual telecommunication environment uniting geographically separated people in a common visual experience, is discussed at some length. Based on these examples a new art form of composed man-machine interaction is defined. Finally, practical applications are suggested for the fields of education, psychology and psychotherapy.",

The processors analyze the image's posture, rate of movement, and its relationship to other graphic objects in the system. They then react to the movement of the participant and create a series of responses-be they visual or auditory reactions. Two or more environments could also be linked. \nA series of simulations is programmed based on any action and Videoplace offered over 50 compositions and interactions (including Critter, Individual Medley, Fractal, Finger Painting, Digital Drawing, Body Surfacing, Replay, among others). \nTo illustrate, when the participant's silhouette pushed a graphic object-the computer choose to move the object or the silhouette. Or, as in Finger Painting where each finger created flowing paint without the distraction of the silhouette. \n\nMyron Krueger is one of the original pioneers of virtual reality and interactive art. Beginning in 1969, Krueger developed the prototypes for what would eventually be called Virtual Reality.\n\nMore info: \nhttp://www.artmuseum.net/w2vr/timelin...",

The work abandons GUI metaphors and builds on the language of cinema, casting users as actors within simulated narrative models. The research articulates philosophical goals, design principles, and interaction techniques that create strong emotional responses and social engagement through visceral interaction. The research describes approaches to clearly communicate cultural and scientific ideas through the medium and demonstrates how practitioners can design interactions that promote specific social behaviors in users.\n\nSnibbe, S. and H. "abstractNote": "Successful collaborations between New Media Arts and HCI tend to develop hybrid techniques that promote balanced contributions from both disciplines. However, since many of these collaborations are one-off or highly dependent on the researchers/artists involved, systematic discussions of the role and impact of the various evaluation techniques and methodologies are missing. This workshop is aimed at practitioners from both HCI and the Arts as a venue to discuss the contribution that one another's techniques have made to their own practice, evaluate critical issues in HCI/New Media Collaboration, and examine ways that existing approaches can be extended for a deeper role in practice, design, and research.",

"abstractNote": "Dyadic and collective activities requiring temporally coordinated action are likely to be associated with cardiac and respiratory patterns that synchronize within and between people. However, the extent and functional significance of cardiac and respiratory between-person couplings have not been investigated thus far. Here, we report interpersonal oscillatory couplings among eleven singers and one conductor engaged in choir singing. We find that: (a) phase synchronization both in respiration and heart rate variability increase significantly during singing relative to a rest condition; (b) phase synchronization is higher when singing in unison than when singing pieces with multiple voice parts; (c) directed coupling measures are consistent with the presence of causal effects of the conductor on the singers at high modulation frequencies; (d) the different voices of the choir are reflected in network analyses of cardiac and respiratory activity based on graph theory. Our results suggest that oscillatory coupling of cardiac and respiratory patterns provide a physiological basis for interpersonal action coordination.",

"abstractNote": "Synchronization phenomena in large populations of interacting elements are the subject of intense research efforts in physical, biological, chemical, and social systems. A successful approach to the problem of synchronization consists of modeling each member of the population as a phase oscillator. In this review, synchronization is analyzed in one of the most representative models of coupled phase oscillators, the Kuramoto model. A rigorous mathematical treatment, specific numerical methods, and many variations and extensions of the original model that have appeared in the last few years are presented. Relevant applications of the model in different contexts are also included.",

"abstractNote": "Effective interpersonal coordination is fundamental to robust social interaction, and the ability to anticipate a coactor’s behavior is essential for achieving this coordination. However, coordination research has focused on the behavioral synchrony that occurs between the simple periodic movements of coactors and, thus, little is known about the anticipation that occurs during complex, everyday interaction. Research on the dynamics of coupled neurons, human motor control, electrical circuits, and laser semiconductors universally demonstrates that small temporal feedback delays are necessary for the anticipation of chaotic events. We therefore investigated whether similar feedback delays would promote anticipatory behavior during social interaction. Results revealed that coactors were not only able to anticipate others’ chaotic movements when experiencing small perceptual-motor delays, but also exhibited movement patterns of equivalent complexity. This suggests that such delays, including those within the human nervous system, may enhance, rather than hinder, the anticipatory processes that underlie successful social interaction.",
