records as documents are generally seen by academic and other\nusers, and by society generally, as passive resources to be exploited for various historical and\ncultural purposes. Historians since the mid-nineteenth century, in pursuing the new scientific\nhistory, needed an archive that was a neutral repositories of facts. Until very recently, archivists\nobliged by extolling their own professional myth of impartiality, neutrality, and objectivity.\nYet archives are established by the powerful to protect or enhance their position in society.\nThrough archives, the past is controlled. Certain stories are privileged and others marginalized.\nAnd archivists are an integral part of this story-telling. In the design of record-keeping systems,\nin the appraisal and selection of a tiny fragment of all possible records to enter the archive,\nin approaches to subsequent and ever-changing description and preservation of the archive,\nand in its patterns of communication and use, archivists continually reshape, reinterpret, and\nreinvent the archive. Although Said's work deals primarily with discourse about the Arab world, much of his argument has been applied to other regions of \"the Orient.\"\n\nDrawing on Said's book, Carol A. Breckenridge, Peter van der Veer, and the contributors to this book explore the ways colonial administrators constructed knowledge about the society and culture of India and the processes through which that knowledge has shaped past and present Indian reality.\n\nOne common theme that links the essays in Orientalism and the Postcolonial Predicament is the proposition that Orientalist discourse is not just restricted to the colonial past but continues even today. This civilizing mission, however, was a double moment in American history, for not only was it intended to reconstitute ‘Indians’ as American citizens through the force of law - it also enabled a certain claim to innocence on the part of American society. But\nunderstanding the theoretical implications of a problematized “archive” and knowing\nwhat that means “on the ground” – in particular cases and sites and empirical examples\n– are not always the same thing. In order to help rectify that sometimes-disjuncture\nbetween theory and practice, this essay presents a story of a racialized landscape that\nbegins with one foray into an\nhistorical archive in a very traditional sense – a local\nrepository of government documents.
