A cohort of 1,355 patients who underwent dental extractions was included. Eight predictor variables (risk factors), namely patient gender, hygiene, tooth location, previous surgical site infection, traumatic extraction, systemic diseases, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use, were considered in a risk factor model. A binary regression logistic analysis was performed to determine significant associations.\n\n\nRESULTS\n\nIn total 1,302 participants completed the follow-up. Eighty incident case patients with alveolar osteitis and 80 matched control patients were included. The IHS is a computer-based tool for histology learning that presents high-resolution images of histology basics as well as specific oral histologies at different magnifications and with text labels. Survey data were collected from 204 first-year dental students at the Universidad Austral de Chile. The survey consisted of questions for the respondents to evaluate the characteristics of the IHS and the contribution of various teaching methods to their histology learning. The response rate was 85 percent. Student evaluations were positive for the design, usability, and theoretical-practical integration of the IHS, and the students reported they would recommend the method to future students. The students continued to value traditional teaching methods for histological lab work and did not think this new technology would replace traditional methods. With respect to the contribution of each teaching method to students' learning, no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found for an evaluation of IHS, light microscopy, and slide presentations. However, these student assessments were significantly more positive than the evaluations of other digital or printed materials. Overall, the students evaluated the IHS very positively in terms of method quality and contribution to their learning; they also evaluated use of light microscopy and teacher slide presentations "Antecedentes: El manejo óptimo de una lesión de caries involucra un diagnóstico precisoy confiable, junto con una decisión apropiada de tratamiento. El método diagnósticotradicional sigue siendo el visual-táctil y se enfoca en detectar lesiones cavitacionales.Actualmente se conocen sistemas de clasificación de la caries dental que incluyen laslesiones tempranas de caries y permiten optar por un tratamiento no operatorio o por unooperatorio. La radiografía se reconoce como un complemento para el diagnóstico actualde caries dental. La concordancia entre el examen de caries visual-táctil y el radiográficopara caries interproximal varía según la prevalencia de caries. Propósito: Comparar elnúmero de lesiones interproximales de caries detectadas mediante examen visual-táctil yradiográfico (radiografías coronales). Métodos: Se realizó examen visual-táctil y radiográficoen 40 sujetos (16-35 años de edad). Se calculó el acuerdo entre exámenes mediante kappano ponderado. Resultados: El COP-D promedio fue de 4,9 ± 3,4 (C: 0,2 ± 0,4; O: 4,9 ± 3,4; P: 0).En los dientes posteriores el examen visual-táctil mostró un CO-S promedio de 5 ± 4 (C: 0,2 ±0,5) y el radiográfico de 16,0 ± 3,4 (radiolucidez dentinaria: 2,9 ± 1,7; en esmalte: 13,1 ± 3,3). Elnivel de acuerdo (coeficiente kappa) entre la prueba visual-táctil y la radiografía fue insignificante(0,0012-0,08). METHODS: Systematic review of studies in MEDLINE, SciELO and ScienceDirect, published between 1960 and 2012, in English, Spanish or German, which compares detection of mandibular bone tissue invasion via different imaging tests against a histopathology reference standard. Sensitivity and specificity data were extracted from each study. The outcome measure was diagnostic accuracy. RESULTS: We found 338 articles, of which five fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Tests included were: CT (four articles), MRI (four articles), panoramic radiography (one article), positron-emission tomography (PET)/CT (one article) and cone beam CT (CBCT) (one article). The quality of articles is low to moderate and the evidence shows that all tests have a high diagnostic accuracy for detection of mandibular bone tissue invasion by SCC, with sensitivity values of 94% (MRI), 91% (CBCT), 83% (CT), 55% (panoramic radiography) and specificity values of 100% (CT, MRI, CBCT), 97% (PET/CT) and 91.7% (panoramic radiography). CONCLUSION: Available evidence is scarce and of only low to moderate quality. However, it is consistently shown that current imaging methods give a moderate to high diagnostic accuracy for the detection of mandibular bone tissue invasion by SCC. Preterm birth is a highly complex syndrome that includes distinct clinical subtypes in which many different causes may be involved. The results of epidemiological, molecular, microbiological and animal-model studies support a positive association between maternal periodontal disease and preterm birth. However, the results of intervention studies carried out to determine the effect of periodontal treatment on reducing the risk of preterm birth are controversial. This systematic review critically analyzes the methodological issues of meta-analyses of the studies to determine the effect of periodontal treatment to reduce preterm birth. The quality of the individual randomized clinical trials selected is of highest relevance for a systematic review. This article describes the methodological features that should be identified a priori and assessed individually to determine the quality of a randomized controlled trial performed to evaluate the effect of periodontal treatment on pregnancy outcomes. The AMSTAR and the PRISMA checklist tools were used to assess the quality of the six meta-analyses selected, and the bias domain of the Cochrane Collaboration's Tool was applied to evaluate each of the trials included in the meta-analyses. In addition, the methodological characteristics of each clinical trial were assessed. The majority of the trials included in the meta-analyses have significant methodological flaws that threaten their internal validity. The lack of effect of periodontal treatment on preterm birth rate concluded by four meta-analyses, and the positive effect of treatment for reducing preterm birth risk concluded by the remaining two meta-analyses are not based on consistent scientific evidence. Las revistas con mayor cantidad de artículos fueron Int J Odontostomatol (225), Rev Dent Chile (185) y Rev. Clin. Periodoncia Implantol. Rehabil. Oral (145). Las instituciones con mayor número de autores son Universidad de Chile (702), Universidad de Valparaíso (179) y Universidad de La Frontera (160). Las palabras claves más utilizadas fueron enfermedad periodontal, caries e implante dental. \nConclusión: Se observó un aumento en el número de revistas, cantidad de artículos, autores e instituciones que publican en revistas periódicas chilenas. Dos investigadoras (JI, VC) visitaron a dentistas trabajando en las ciudades de Valdivia y Puerto Montt pidiéndoles que contestasen un cuestionario acerca de su nivel de satisfacción laboral (1: muy insatisfecho a 7: muy satisfecho) según factores internos y externos relacionados mediante la escala de Warr-Cook-Wall. Los datos fueron analizados mediante regresión múltiple lineal simultánea, en la cual la variable respuesta fue satisfacción laboral, y las predictoras los factores internos/externos, para detectar aquellas asociadas significativamente (p < 0,05).\n\nResultados\nObtuvimos 171 encuestas de 91 odontólogas mujeres y 80 hombres, con un promedio ± desviación estándar de edad de 35,6 ± 10,7 años y una antigüedad laboral de 7,6 ± 8,0 años. Trabajan 22 ± 19 h en el sector público (51,5%), 10 ± 13 h contratado en clínicas privadas (26,3%) y 10 ± 12 h en clínicas propias (22,2%). El nivel de satisfacción laboral general fue 5,6 ± 1,1, de 7, con diferencia significativa para quienes trabajan en clínica propia (6,05 ± 0,84). Este modelo explica el 75% de la satisfacción laboral, y las variables predictoras asociadas de manera significativa son: responsabilidad asignada, remuneración, compañeros de trabajo, horarios, condiciones físicas de trabajo y posibilidad de usar habilidades, esta última solo en odontólogos de consulta privada.\n\nConclusión\nLos odontólogos encuestados presentan un alto nivel de satisfacción profesional, y este nivel se asocia en mayor medida a factores externos. sealed approximal noncavitated incipient caries lesions with and without a preceding bonding step.\n\n\nMATERIALS AND METHODS\n\nA total of 26 proximal noncavitated caries lesions were sealed in vivo, using a sealant in 13 premolars with orthodontic indication of extraction. Each tooth was randomly assigned to mesial or distal surface application of a sealant in the lesion area and in surrounding sound enamel, with or without a bonding system. Four groups were analyzed: a nonbonding group in the lesion area (NBL); a nonbonding group in sound enamel (NBS); a bonding group in the lesion area (BL) and a bonding group in sound enamel (BS). The premolars were extracted after two weeks. All sealed areas were cut and demineralized with 37% hydrochloric acid for 24 h. For each group, the resin tags were observed and measured by scanning electron microscopy.\n\n\nRESULTS\n\nThe lesion areas showed a very irregular resin network with twisted and curved tags in contrast to the sound enamel where a regular etching pattern was observed. The length of resin tags in microns for each group (mean +/-SD) was: NBG-L = 4.19 +/- 1.59; NBG-S = 5.49 +/- 2.49; BG-L = 4.57 +/- 1.99; and BG-S = 4.21 +/- 1.87. The differences between the groups were not statistically significant (p = 0.34). Of permanent 1st molars in the PDP group, 87% were caries-free compared to 61% in the control group (p<0.001).
