The dataset therefore covers a broad range of different occupational\ngroups.\nMain findings: Multiple-group analyses indicated that the scale’s factor structure remains\ninvariant across different employee groups and across time. High values in job resources\nwere related to high values in Work-SoC whereas high values in job demands were related\nto low values in Work-SoC. Furthermore, Work-SoC acted as a partial mediator between\njob resources and work engagement.\nPractical/managerial implications: It can be concluded that Work-SoC might serve as a\npractical screening instrument for assessing an employee’s perception of the potential\nhealth-promoting qualities of his or her current work situation.\nContribution/value-add: The study advances both the salutogenic theory and the field\nof positive occupational health psychology by redefining sense of coherence as an\ninteractional and context-specific construct that is useful for intervention upon teachers. Drawing on individual interviews with 50 varied teachers in 15 Canadian elementary and secondary schools, as well as supplementary focus groups, the article analyses teacher's emotional responses to educational change. The paper finds that while teachers report having largely positive emotional experiences of self‐initiated change and predominantly negative ones concerning mandated change, almost half the examples of self‐initiated change that are cited actually have a legislated, mandated origin. More important for the experience and management of change, therefore, is not so much whether change is external or internal in its source, but whether it is inclusive or exclusive in its design and conduct. It is also a necessary ingredient to the successful implementation, adaptation or resistance reform agendas. Surprisingly, however, the relationship between teachers’ motivation, efficacy, job satisfaction and commitment, and between commitment and the quality of their work has not been the subject of extensive research. As educational innovations are more often than not accompanied by stress, the present study focuses on the onset of burnout among teachers who recently implemented this innovative system in the Netherlands.Aims: To test hypotheses that the extent to which teachers have a negative attitude towards the new instructional practices relates positively to their level of burnout, and that their self-efficacy beliefs regarding implementation of the practices and coping with stress involved in this relate negatively to their burnout levels. Sample: A random sample of 490 teachers employed in the Study-home system participated in this study.Methods: Three questionnaires were used. The Dutch version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory for teachers (Schaufeli & Van Horn, 1995) was used to assess the teachers' burnout level. Second, a specially developed self-efficacy questionnaire relating to the domains of: (1) guiding groups of students using the principle of differentiation, (2) involving pupils with tasks and (3) use of innovative educational practices. Last, a questionnaire on the teachers' attitudes concerning the usefulness and effectiveness of the Study-home as an educational innovation.Results: Regression analyses showed that the self-efficacy beliefs for each of the three domains were significantly and negatively related to the depersonalisation and emotional exhaustion dimensions of burnout, and significantly positively related to the personal accomplishment dimension. Furthermore, the more negative the teachers' attitudes towards the Study-home appeared to be, the more they appeared to suffer from depersonalisation and emotional exhaustion, and the lower they scored on the personal accomplishment dimension of burnout.Conclusions: The study's results indicate that teachers' self-efficacy beliefs are related to their burnout level. A set of core concepts is seen to be emerging, including the psychological wellbeing module of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative’s international research on poverty. One of the core components of wellbeing according to this initiative and others is meaning in life. The present study focuses on a psychometric evaluation of a short measure of meaning in life to be used in international measurement of wellbeing, using data from a nationally-representative sample of households in Chile (N = 1,997). The factor structure of the Meaning in Life Questionnaire-Short Form (MLQ-SF) was confirmed, and shown to be invariant across gender and age. The items of the MLQ-SF formed a factor that was distinct from the items of other wellbeing measures that were assessed (psychological needs, life satisfaction, and domain satisfaction). Scores on the MLQ-SF were reliable in this sample, and correlated in the expected directions with other wellbeing indicators.
