"abstractNote": "Our physical bodies play a central role in shaping human experience in the world, understandingof the world, and interactions in the world. This paper draws on theories of embodiment - from psychology, sociology, and philosophy - synthesizing five themes we believe are particularly salient for interaction design: thinking through doing, performance, visibility, risk, and thick practice. We intro-duce aspects of human embodied engagement in the world with the goal of inspiring new interaction design ap-proaches and evaluations that better integrate the physical and computational worlds.",

"abstractNote": "Several systems have been designed where a physical object is used to access digital information that is stored outside the object, but as yet no common vocabulary exists to describe such systems. We introduce a schema with three types of physical objects that can be linked to digital information: Containers are generic objects used to move information between different devices or platforms; tokens are used to access stored information, the nature of which is physically reflected in the token in some way; and tools are used to manipulate digital information. This paper gives special notice to token-based access system, and design implications for such systems are discussed. As an example of token-based access we have implemented WebStickers, where physical objects can be coupled with WWW pages. We present some examples of how tokens are used to access digital information in this system, and discuss future work in this area.",

To address this\nproblem, we present a taxonomy, which uses\nmetaphor\nand\nembodiment\nas its two axes. This 2D space treats\ntangibility as a spectrum rather than a binary quantity.\nThe further from the origin, the more ‘‘tangible’’ a sys-\ntem is. We show that this spectrum-based taxonomy\noffers multiple advantages. It unifies previous categori-\nzations and definitions, integrates the notion of ‘‘calm\ncomputing,’’ reveals a previously un-noticed trend in the\nfield, and suggests design principles appropriate for\ndifferent areas of the spectrum",

"abstractNote": "In the last two decades, Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) have emerged as a new interface type that interlinks the digital and physical worlds. Drawing upon users' knowledge and skills of interaction with the real non-digital world, TUIs show a potential to enhance the way in which people interact with and leverage digital information. However, TUI research is still in its infancy and extensive research is required in order to fully understand the implications of tangible user interfaces, to develop technologies that further bridge the digital and the physical, and to guide TUI design with empirical knowledge. This monograph examines the existing body of work on Tangible User Interfaces. We start by sketching the history of tangible user interfaces, examining the intellectual origins of this field. We then present TUIs in a broader context, survey application domains, and review frameworks and taxonomies. We also discuss conceptual foundations of TUIs including perspectives from cognitive sciences, psychology, and philosophy. Methods and technologies for designing, building, and evaluating TUIs are also addressed. Finally, we discuss the strengths and limitations of TUIs and chart directions for future research.",

"abstractNote": "In order to better explore the opportunities for tangible interaction in new areas such as the home or cultural heritage sites, we used multiple rapidly-developed prototypes that take advantage of existing technology. Physical prototypes allow us to give form to ideas and to evaluate the integration of form and function, two core components of tangible interaction. We discuss potentials and pitfalls when using off-the-shelf digital devices (by embedding a device, cracking it open and building on it, or collating board and parts) through six prototypes developed in two studies. Hacking devices to materialize our ideas proved excellent for fast prototyping. Technology imposed constraints and prompted different design solutions than initially intended offering unexpected ways to engage. On the basis of this experience we outline a process and offer guidelines for the fast prototyping of tangible interactions.",

"abstractNote": "Innovation is an economic imperative that calls for more people to be innovating, more often. This handbook equips people in various lines of work to become more innovative. It provides specific guidance for bringing new and lasting value into the world. \n The key ingredient to successful innovation is the everyday practice of Human-Centered Design: the discipline of developing solutions in the service of people. Every story of a good innovation--whether it's a new product, a new service, a new business model or a new form of governance-- begins and ends with people. It starts with careful discernment of human needs, and concludes with solutions that meet or exceed personal expectations. \n This handbook is your essential resource for innovation. It's a compact reference book describing thirty-six methods of Human-Centered Design, organized by way of three key design skills: \n \n - Looking: Methods for observing human experience \n - Understanding: Methods for analyzing challenges and opportunities \n - Making: Methods for envisioning future possibilities \n Each featured method includes a brief description; a pictorial example; a listing of benefits; a sampling of method combinations; and a quick guide with helpful hints for initial application. The full collection of methods is small enough to digest quickly, yet large enough to address myriad challenges. This book does not prescribe a formulaic innovation process. Rather, it introduces a versatile set of methods for practicing Human-Centered Design as a daily discipline in order to be more innovative and drive sustainable growth. \n Learn more at: luma-institute.com",

"abstractNote": "This paper introduces a paradigm for describing and specifying tangible user interfaces (TUIs). The proposed Token and Constraints (TAC) paradigm captures the core components of TUIs while addressing many of the conceptual challenges unique to building these interfaces. The paradigm enables the description of a broad range of TUIs by providing a common set of constructs. Thus, the TAC paradigm lays the foundation for a high-level description language and a software toolkit for TUIs. We evaluate the proposed paradigm by testing its ability to specify a wide variety of existing TUIs.",

"abstractNote": "Tangible interaction shows promise to significantly enhance computer-mediated support for activities such as learning, problem solving, and design. However, tangible user interfaces are currently considered challenging to design and build. Designers and developers of these interfaces encounter several conceptual, methodological, and technical difficulties. Among others, these challenges include: the lack of appropriate interaction abstractions, the shortcomings of current user interface software tools to address continuous and parallel interactions, as well as the excessive effort required to integrate novel input and output technologies. To address these challenges, we propose a specification paradigm for designing and implementing Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs), that enables TUI developers to specify the structure and behavior of a tangible user interface using high-level constructs which abstract away implementation details. An important benefit of this approach, which is based on User Interface Description Language (UIDL) research, is that these specifications could be automatically or semi-automatically converted into concrete TUI implementations. In addition, such specifications could serve as a common ground for investigating both design and implementation concerns by TUI developers from different disciplines. Thus, the primary contribution of this article is a high-level UIDL that provides developers from different disciplines means for effectively specifying, discussing, and programming a broad range of tangible user interfaces. There are three distinct elements to this contribution: a visual specification technique that is based on Statecharts and Petri nets, an XML-compliant language that extends this visual specification technique, as well as a proof-of-concept prototype of a Tangible User Interface Management System (TUIMS) that semi-automatically translates high-level specifications into a program controlling specific target technologies.",

"abstractNote": "Augmenting the physical world by integrating digital information with everyday physical objects, tangible user interfaces offer a more natural, intuitive and accessible form of interaction than traditional user interfaces. They draw upon users' knowledge and skills of the everyday non-digital world, such as pre-existing spatial, motor and social skills. With a broad range of application-domains, including education, planning and design, problem solving, and entertainment, these interfaces show a potential to enhance the way people interact with and leverage digital information. However, tangible user interfaces are currently considered challenging to design and build. Designers and developers of these interfaces encounter several conceptual, methodological and technical difficulties. Among others, these challenges include: the lack of appropriate interaction abstractions, the shortcomings of current user interface software tools to address continuous and parallel interactions, as well as the excessive effort required to integrate various input and output technologies. This dissertation addresses these challenges by proposing a new paradigm for developing tangible user interfaces. Rather than using a specific toolkit, we propose to specify the structure and behavior of a tangible user interface using high-level constructs, which abstract away implementation details. Thus, developers would be able to use a comprehensive set of abstractions to specify, discuss and program tangible interactions. An important benefit of this approach is that these specifications can be automatically or semi automatically converted into different concrete TUI implementations by a Tangible User Interface Management System (TUIMS). In addition, such specifications could serve as a common ground for investigating both design and implementation concerns by TUI developers from different backgrounds. Thus, the primary contribution of this dissertation is a high-level user interface description language that provides developers, from different disciplinary backgrounds, means for effectively specifying, programming and refining a broad range of tangible user interfaces. There are four distinct elements to this contribution: (1) a set of abstractions for describing the structure and behavior of tangible user interfaces, (2) visual specification techniques that utilize the above set of abstractions, for effectively modeling tangible interaction while capturing its unique characteristics, (3) a declarative XML-compliant language, based on the above specification techniques, that provides a canonical format for specifying tangible user interfaces, (4) a high-level architecture and a set of proof-of-concept prototypes that demonstrate the feasibility of building a Tangible User Interface Management System that semi-automatically translates high-level specifications into a program controlling specific target technologies. This user interface description language (UIDL) was evaluated using three evaluation methods: cognitive dimensions for notations, specification of benchmark user interfaces and application in a classroom environment over several semesters. Our evaluation found that the proposed language is capable of describing a broad range of TUIs and can be easily used by developers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to specify, refine and discuss tangible interaction effectively.",

With a similar intent, I propose an extension to the structurational perspective on technology that develops a practice lens to examine how people, as they interact with a technology in their ongoing practices, enact structures which shape their emergent and situated use of that technology. Viewing the use of technology as a process of enactment enables a deeper understanding of the constitutive role of social practices in the ongoing use and change of technologies in the workplace. After developing this lens, I offer an example of its use in research, and then suggest some implications for the study of technology in organizations.",
