            "abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to describe how four teachers in four different cities in Missouri implemented a constructivist-based learning environment (CBLE) that included an innovation cluster that paired an emerging online technology with a unit design framework. The motivating question for the study originated from prior research on teacher reform efforts including the adoption of technology innovations in the classroom, new theories of constructivist-based learning and the principles of professional development for educators implementing reform. Using a multiple case study research method, the researchers collected and analyzed data to (1) identify how effectively each of the teachers implemented the CBLE unit based on their goals for adopting the innovations while participating in online collaborative professional development and (2) identify cross-case issues that arose as the teachers implemented the unit. Conclusions in the study suggest that the teachers implemented innovation into their classrooms with varied levels of effectiveness based on their initial goals for the reform process. Aspects that influenced the effectiveness of their unit and the implementation of the innovation included (1) the teacher’s ability to benefit from online collaborative professional development forums, (2) the teacher’s problem-solving strategies for resolving conflict issues related to their local school environment, and (3) their prior conceptions about teaching and learning and their compatibility with the reform instructional pedagogy.",

            "abstractNote": "In this study, we followed three faculty members’ experiences with designing and teaching online\ncourses for the first time. In order to complete the activity, the faculty members had to work\ncollaboratively with others across the university. Activity theory provided a framework within which\nto study faculty members’ collaborative activities with members of different activity systems that had\ndifferent goals, tools, divisions of labor and accountabilities. In concordance with activity theory,\nsuch differences led to contradictions, disturbances, and transformations in thinking and\nwork activities. The results of the study have implications for individuals and systems undertaking\ntechnology integration in teaching.",

            "abstractNote": "The widespread adoption of information and communications technologies (ICT) in higher education\n(HE) since the mid 1990s has failed to produce the radical changes in learning and teaching\nthan many anticipated. Activity theory and Rogers’ model of the adoption of innovations provide\nanalytic frameworks that help develop our understanding of the actual impact of ICT upon teaching\npractices. This paper draws on a series of large-scale surveys carried out over a 10 year period with\ndistance education tutors at the UK Open University to explore the changing role of ICT in the\nwork of teachers. It investigates how HE teachers in one large distance learning university have, over\ntime, appropriated ICT applications as teaching tools, and the gradual rather than revolutionary\nchanges that have resulted.",

            "abstractNote": "Because computers potentially transform pedagogy, much has been made of their ability to\nimpact positively on student performance, particularly in subjects such as mathematics and\nscience. However, there is currently a dearth of research regarding exactly how the computer\nacts as a transformative tool in disadvantaged schools. Drawing on a detailed case study of\na Grade 6 mathematics classroom I address the question of whether the introduction of a new\ntool – the computer – into the classroom shifts a teacher's pedagogical practice. I do this by\nelaborating on Vygotsky's learning theory before discussing Activity Theory as a framework\nfor analysing change within and between the activity systems of the classroom and the computer\nlaboratory. By focusing on contradictions as dynamic forces of change, I demonstrate how we\ncan track transformation within an activity system. Tracking these contradictions enables me\nto illustrate how the use of the computer potentially leads to a shift in the object of the\nmathematics classroom, which in turn, leads to shifts in other elements of the classroom. This\narticle seeks to provide one illustration of the way in which Activity Theory can be used as a\nmethodological tool to investigate pedagogical change within a classroom.",

            "abstractNote": "The paper examines studies based on the theory of expansive learning, formulated in 1987.\nIn recent years the theory has been used in a wide variety of studies and interventions. The\ntheory builds on foundational ideas put forward by Vygotsky, Leont’ev, Il’enkov, and Davydov,\nkey figures in the Russian school of cultural–historical activity theory. Studies based on\nthe theory are reviewed in six sections: expansive learning as transformation of the object,\nexpansive learning as movement in the zone of proximal development, expansive learning\nas cycles of learning actions, expansive learning as boundary crossing and network building,\nexpansive learning as distributed and discontinuous movement, and formative interventions.\nA separate section is devoted to critiques of expansive learning. It is concluded that\nthe ultimate test of learning theories ishowthey help practitioners to generate learning that\ngrasps pressing issues the humankind is facing. The theory of expansive learning currently\nexpands its analyses both up and down, outward and inward. Moving up and outward, it\ntackles learning in fields or networks of interconnected activity systems with their partially\nshared and often contested objects. Moving down and inward, it tackles issues of subjectivity,\nexperiencing, personal sense, emotion, embodiment, identity, and moral commitment.",
