They are present in all departments, but in greater numbers in Moselle. Each time, they seem disconnected from “occupancy level” sites, or potentially contemporary Meso- and Neolithic habitat sites.\nThe two majority types identified are the “Mesolithic cylindrical profile” type and the “Y profile - Schlitzgruben” type and the radiocarbon dating undertaken gives results between the Middle Mesolithic and the end of the Neolithic, despite an interruption between -8000 and approximately -6000 BCE. Between -6000 and -2000 the fluctuations observed are undoubtedly to be linked to the fluctuations of the IntCal 20 calibration curve. Some dates after the end of the Neolithic are to be linked to the terminal filling of these pits. The pits are preferentially located in large valleys, on slopes or at the bottom of slopes, in rather flat areas and near watercourses, according to the data provided by the corpus. Only 2 real “battery” alignments have so far been identified. The archaeological furniture is quite poor. A significant number of pits did not yield any artifacts. A few flakes of flint (blade, drill, or debitage flakes) were sometimes collected, mainly thanks to the sieving of the filling sediments. The fauna is also present in small quantities, but some originalities should be mentioned (aurochs spine at the bottom of a “V-shaped” pit, for example). The ceramic shards found generally come from the last filling levels and are disconnected from the phase of use of these pits. The same remark is valid for the ecofacts (coal, cereal seeds) discovered in the stratigraphic backfill units. No studies such as micromorphology, malacology, palynology or sediment analysis have currently been carried out in Lorraine. The synthesis of the characteristics of the deep pits discovered in Lorraine supports the hypothesis of a big game trap, in the current state of the data. The rate of discoveries of this type of archaeological structure nevertheless remains quite low. Its western part is occupied by the Armorican Massif and a large part of the sedimentary rock. The region is characterised by its sparse woodland. Land use is dominated by livestock farming in the western part and agriculture in the eastern part of the region. The developments that have led to archaeological excavations are concentrated in the four major regional cities (Rouen, Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg) and the coastal areas. While the first identified discoveries of Schlitzgruben date back to the early 1990s, the research boom took place between 2008 and 2015. Excavations dedicated to these pits and the identification of the extensive systems were carried out between 2015 and 2023, and by early 2024 several large sites had been prescribed and were awaiting excavation. Deep pits (type 1 to 5) are still rarer than Schlitzgruben (83 compared to 238), but there is a large imbalance in the number of sites. The deep pits of types 1 to 5 are mostly grouped together in systems at some very well-supplied sites (Arnières-sur-Iton, Sannerville), while the Schlitzgruben are more frequently found isolated in the region. The chronological spectrum resulting from the cumulative data obtained in Normandy corresponds broadly to that of the national dataset. There are some gaps in Normandy that still need to be filled or completed, particularly in the early Mesolithic and the 6th and 3rd millennia. The artefacts offer some interesting possibilities for investigation, with very specific assemblages. As far as the Lithic period is concerned, the Ronai/La Hoguette and Arnières-sur-Iton series have yielded artefacts that are thought to have been used for purposes other than domestic use and are interpreted as being linked to hunting. The fauna is only sparsely represented. Apart from two captured animals that were not recovered, the furniture consists of selected pieces of wild animals left in the mounds, probably as a result of deliberate practises. A single malacological analysis was carried out at the Giberville site. Hunting pits can be found in every type of environment: on the plain, on plateaus and in the hills (with the possible exception of the Jura, the Vosges and the Morvan). However, they are more likely to be found in areas of high economic activity, where preventive archaeology is more active.\nA total of 173 pits are known, most of which have an oval or oblong plan, but there are also round and rectangular plans and other more irregular shapes. Only a few pits have W-, I-, cone- or nipple-shaped profiles.\nAlthough the pits were found at sites inhabited from the Palaeolithic to the modern period, only a few of them have been dated (32 at 13 different sites). These dates cover the entire Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age up to the early Middle Ages. However, the majority of the dates are from the Neolithic to the latest Bronze Age, with one group focusing on the early and middle Neolithic (5th to mid-4th millennium) and another on the latest Neolithic/Bronze Age (mid-3rd to 2nd millennium). This division into two groups can be recognised at the regional level, but also at the site level when the number of dates is sufficiently large, as in Arc-sur-Tille. Unfortunately, this observation cannot be generalised due to the amount of data available. The fragmentary nature of excavations and the fact that much of the information comes from surveys make it difficult to discern how the pits were organised, as they often appear to be isolated. However, linear funnel-shaped features (Saint-Julien-du-Sault, Chevigny-Saint-Sauveur) or transport corridors in wooded areas (Selongey) are conceivable in a few places. This hypothesis is supported by the only malacological study carried out in the region in Arc-sur-Tille, where the pits were probably located in the middle of a more or less dense forest. These features display specific pedological characteristics, notably a secondary carbonate precipitation within their infillings. While this phenomenon is recurrently observed in Mesolithic structures, it is sometimes inappropriately used as a chronological marker for such ditched features. The various structures identified at Cardinal II thus provide an opportunity to better understand the pedological processes at work within these features, to determine their origin, and potentially to identify a chronological evolution of their infillings by comparing data from diachronic pits and natural sedimentary sequences. The transdisciplinary methodology adopted combines paleoenvironmental studies (malacology, anthracology), laboratory analyses (calcimetry, OSL, radiocarbon dating), and geoarchaeology (geomorphology, soil science, micromorphology). The geoarchaeological approach, in particular, makes it possible to recontextualize the phenomenon of secondary carbonate precipitation within a broader pedogenetic evolution, taking into account both the structure and its surrounding matrix. Beyond improving our understanding of this pedological process affecting prehistoric and protohistoric features, the various analytical methods also provide insight into the climatic and anthropogenic forcings, as well as the evolution of the vegetation cover at the Cardinal II site throughout the Holocene. industrielle. Son extension a permis l’étude, à travers les 10 900 m² investigués, de structures énigmatiques et récurrentes que sont les fosses en «V-Y». L’occupation principale concerne les secteurs 1 des « Ormissets » et 4 de « La Goutte d’Or » et est matérialisée par plusieurs fosses en fente, toutes focalisées sur la période du Néolithique moyen II. La question de la fonction de ces fosses, au profil morphologique si particulier, reste un sujet inépuisable de discussion. L’application d’une grille de lecture allant du microscopique au macroscopique (analyses phytolitariennes, pédologiques, spatiale à l’échelle de la zone industrielle) permet d’apporter quelques éléments de réfl exion. Les différentes analyses menées sur ce panel de six fosses permettent de disposer de premiers éléments de réponse, même si à l’évidence le débat est loin d’être clos. L’hypothèse ainsi privilégiée ici, que rien ne contredit du point de vue des résultats d’analyses, est celle de fosses de chasse. "abstractNote": "Les vestiges mis au jour à Nogent-l’Abbesse concernent trois phases chronologiques distinctes : le Mésolithique, le Hallstatt B3-C1 et la période contemporaine.\nL’installation du Mésolithique consiste en cinq fosses de plan circulaire disposées en un alignement irrégulier orienté, peu ou prou, selon un axe est-ouest. Les datations radiocarbone conduites sur des charbons de bois issus du remplissage inférieur de deux d’entre elles situent le démarrage du processus de comblement durant le Mésolithique ancien, dans l’intervalle 8526 - 8272 BC. Cette découverte est d’autant plus intéressante qu’elle prend place dans un contexte géomorphologique et géologique rarement renseigné pour ce type de structure.\nDeux fosses polylobées attestent de la présence d’une installation de la période hallstattienne (Ha B3-C1) sur les parcelles sondées. Le matériau recherché (craie et argile) indique des besoins différents et les éléments mobiliers rejetés, la proximité d’habitation(s). A ces structures bien identifiés se joignent deux faits plus délicats à déterminer (fosse, sols, piégeage de mobilier…).\nLes vestiges de la période contemporaine relèvent principalement du premier conflit mondial. Les données de terrain ont pu être confrontées avec la carte du canevas de tir de 1918 qui s’avère très précise et complète pour ce secteur.\nDes ornières indiquant la présence d’un chemin figuré sur le fond cadastral du XIXe siècle ont été observées.
