Enfants en danger à accueillir aujourd’hui, étrangers candidats à la régularisation de demain, le parcours de prise en charge de ces jeunes révèle toutes les limites institutionnelles et politiques des dispositifs d’accueil. En France, ces jeunes qualifiés de « mineurs isolés étrangers » sont souvent perçus comme des victimes d’une mobilité contrainte ou des aventuriers ayant pris tous les risques. Avec l’ambition de se défaire de ces représentations pour mieux refléter la pluralité des situations, cette recherche considère ces individus avant tout comme des jeunes autonomes, acteurs de leurs expériences. Loin d’être une reproduction du parcours migratoire des adultes, cette recherche doctorale révèle les formes du voyage dans leur diversité et mobilise les expériences de vie individuelles pour souligner toute la singularité de cette migration juvénile. En s’immisçant dans le huis clos des lieux de la protection, cette thèse propose une lecture de la prise en charge selon une approche micro-géographique. Après avoir détaillé le fonctionnement de structures spécialisées dans l’accueil de mineurs isolés étrangers, l’adoption du regard des acteurs de ces lieux révèle les logiques de production de l’espace. Si le parcours de protection des mineurs les prépare à l’autonomie, la fin de leur accueil s’accompagne d’un nouveau défi : créer les conditions légales de leur établissement et celles plus personnelles propices à leur épanouissement.
