the discussion about nature of the interface and
interaction in the age of ubiquitous, pervasive and
ambient computing is shifting from issues of human centred
design to design that takes into consideration even nonhuman
actors and different views of agency and the
ecology of relations.More recent work (e.g. Merritt,
2009; http://www.biomodd.net/) stretches the notion of
interface even further by introducing the possibility of
various organic interfaces and systems: hybrids of
inorganic and organic materials, humans and machines.

\n

traditional notions of ‘the user’
and traditional means of representing him, her, it or them
seen deficient. For this reason we need to rethink the
STS notion of agency that is discussing the same issue of
who is a conscious actor. Who or what has a propensity to
act? What is the level of personal involvement through
data sets that are distinctly ‘close to home’?

\n

The biological, social, political,
geographical and various other actors and their
interactions are becoming part of almost every design
problem in recent years and the goal is to create solutions
that affect whole ecosystems, habitats and institutions
rather than just building a tool for a group of users or for
an individual person.

\n

In order to understand
and act in such a complex world we need to support more
passive, empathic and reflective goals and tasks rather
than interactivity per se. We need more means to reflect
upon such interconnections with the environment in our
habitat and our political, social and economic milieu and
to become aware of their limits. Environments enhanced
by information, sensors and other embedded technologies
form large techno-social systems that in many ways
simulate the old animistic belief in objects having an
agency and life, objects being able to take an active role
in interacting with humans. Design for such
environments has the challenge not only of targetting
humans, like in human-centred approach, but also
concentrating on the flow between both human and nonhuman
actors, environments and their elements and the
environments themselves.

\n

To understand these subtle exchanges between different
actors we can think of them in terms of flows that express
not only spatial but also temporal distance; the time we
need to create tighter, more intimate and everyday
relations and symbiosis with new elements, actors and
environments.

\n

Where human-centered design works with
the dualism of user needs opposed to the world of objects
and things that resist, here we are constantly
interconnected and influenced as part of the flow within a
system of networks and interactions.

\n

With such interfaces very often we are not tackling some
present problem or the past but creating future ecologies.
The aim of such systems and interaction is to instigate
thinking about different possibilities, to contemplate the
design as part of creation of such large information
systems and to reflect the possibilities that technologies
bring. In this sense we are not designing just new types of
objects, but rather new types of ecologies and symbiotic
relations between different actors and agencies. It is a
design that values reflection as much as it values
interaction and creation of new networks and
connections.

\n

The design for this “post-interactive” era
simply prefers monitoring, visualizing, reminding and
persuading as the main functions of the new tools and
applications working with large numbers of human and
non-human users (institutions, stakeholders,
environment). The goal is to create new types of local and
global awareness and support various identities and
communities in the contexts of our neighborhoods, cities,
countries or even the whole planet and the biological
habitat. This plurality and design does not include only
humans but more importantly all kinds of entities with
which we interact and build. These are what Bruno
Latour (2001) calls “collective experiments”,
“progressive compositions”, “provisional assemblies”,
“versions of collectives” or even “cosmopolitics”. By
experimenting and creating a new equilibrium between
human and non-human actors we create very complex,
emergent and symbiotic relations. Design in this nonanthropocentric
and post-interactive sense is more about
symbiosis rather than control.
