            "abstractNote": "The objectives of the present study are: (i) to estimate annual direct medical costs of chronic diseases attributable to overweight and obesity among adults in China and (ii) to predict the medical costs if the epidemic continues developing. Using 2002 National Nutrition and Health Survey (n = 39,834), the prevalence of overweight [24 > or = body mass index (BMI) < 28] and obesity (BMI > or = 28), and population attributable risks (PARs) for hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke were calculated. The 2003 third National Health Services Survey (n = 143,521) was used to derive direct medical costs including costs for outpatient visits, physician services, inpatient stays, rehabilitation services, nursing fees and medications. The medical costs attributable to overweight and obesity were estimated by multiplying the disease costs by PAR for each disease. The total medical cost attributable to overweight and obesity was estimated at 21.11 billion Yuan (RMB) (approximately $2.74 billion) accounting for 25.5% of the total medical costs for the four chronic diseases, or 3.7% of national total medical costs in 2003. The medical cost associated with overweight and obesity could increase to 37 billion Yuan (RMB) (approximately $4.8 billion), a 75% increase, if the epidemic developed speedily and the ratio of overweight to obesity approached 1.1:1. The high economic burden of overweight and obesity suggests an urgent need to develop effective interventions for controlling the obesity epidemic and consequently the prevention of chronic diseases.",

            "abstractNote": "The rapid change in diets, physical activity and body composition in\nlow income countries has led to the coexistence of large pockets of\nundernutrition and overnutrition. Public health strategies for\naddressing this situation may be necessary, and price policy options\nare examined for China. Longitudinal dietary data collected in China in\n1989–1993 on a sample of 5625 adults aged 20–45 y were examined.\nThree-day averages of food group consumption and nutrient intake\nwere used in longitudinal statistical models to examine separately the\neffects of food prices on the decision to consume each food group and\nthen the amount consumed. The effects of changes in six food prices on\nthe consumption of each of six food groups, not just the food group\nwhose price had changed, and on three macronutrients were estimated.\nThe effects show large and significant price effects. If the joint\neffects of the nutrition transition are to be considered, then there\nare clear tradeoffs among which foods to tax and which to subsidize.\nMost important is the effect of prices in reducing fat intake of the\nrich but not adversely affecting protein intake for the poor. Increases\nin the prices of pork, eggs and edible oils are predicted to lower fat\nintake. Only increases in pork prices led to reduced protein intakes.\nThis raises questions about earlier policy changes being implemented in\nChina and provides insight into an important and controversial area for\npublic health policy.",
