            "abstractNote": "As a new type of artificial intelligence, ChatGPT is becoming widely used in learning. However, academic consensus regarding its efficacy remains elusive. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of ChatGPT in improving students’ learning performance, learning perception, and higher-order thinking through a meta-analysis of 51 research studies published between November 2022 and February 2025. The results indicate that ChatGPT has a large positive impact on improving learning performance (g = 0.867) and a moderately positive impact on enhancing learning perception (g = 0.456) and fostering higher-order thinking (g = 0.457). The impact of ChatGPT on learning performance was moderated by type of course (QB = 64.249, P < 0.001), learning model (QB = 76.220, P < 0.001), and duration (QB = 55.998, P < 0.001); its effect on learning perception was moderated by duration (QB = 19.839, P < 0.001); and its influence on the development of higher-order thinking was moderated by type of course (QB = 7.811, P < 0.05) and the role played by ChatGPT (QB = 4.872, P < 0.05). This study suggests that: (1) appropriate learning scaffolds or educational frameworks (e.g., Bloom’s taxonomy) should be provided when using ChatGPT to develop students’ higher-order thinking; (2) the broad use of ChatGPT at various grade levels and in different types of courses should be encouraged to support diverse learning needs; (3) ChatGPT should be actively integrated into different learning modes to enhance student learning, especially in problem-based learning; (4) continuous use of ChatGPT should be ensured to support student learning, with a recommended duration of 4–8 weeks for more stable effects; (5) ChatGPT should be flexibly integrated into teaching as an intelligent tutor, learning partner, and educational tool. Finally, due to the limited sample size for learning perception and higher-order thinking, and the moderately positive effect, future studies with expanded scope should further explore how to use ChatGPT more effectively to cultivate students’ learning perception and higher-order thinking.",

            "abstractNote": "A “doctoral student” is the term for a student undertaking the highest level of university degree (a doctorate). “Supervisor” is the term for the academic, or academics, who act as their guide. Unlike taught classroom-based degree courses, doctoral degrees in the UK are normally only, or mainly, focused upon a single intensive research study into a specific topic. Such degree courses facilitate the development of students into highly specialist autonomous researchers capable of independent thought. Typically, a blend of support is provided to each doctoral student which consists of an elective development program of research methods learning opportunities alongside dedicated supervisor support from one or more academic members of staff called “supervisors”. It is the expectation that each supervisor will act as a guide and mentor for the doctoral student, thereby enabling them to successfully complete their program of research. This entry relates primarily to the UK model of supervising a doctoral student. Doctoral programs in other countries may differ.",

            "abstractNote": "La théorie de la charge cognitive (TCC) est une théorie de l’enseignement présentée initialement par le chercheur John Sweller dans les années 1980. Elle vise à adapter l’enseignement aux limites de capacité de la mémoire travail. Elle s’appuie sur différents construits théoriques pour expliquer des phénomènes de charge cognitive qui influencent l’apprentissage. Les construits de départ ont évolué et se sont différenciés au fil de l’évolution de la TCC : certains se sont scindés, d’autres se sont ajoutés, et la plupart ont été redéfinis pour tenir compte de nouveaux résultats empiriques ou de certaines considérations théoriques. Plusieurs chercheurs ont critiqué la conceptualisation des construits de charge cognitive. La présente recherche présente une analyse historique et conceptuelle de cinq construits de charge cognitive à travers les articles théoriques publiés par John Sweller, ainsi que des articles d’autres chercheurs qui ont critiqué la TCC. Les cinq construits analysés sont : la charge cognitive, la surcharge cognitive, la charge cognitive inutile, la charge cognitive intrinsèque et la charge cognitive pertinente. L’analyse historique décrit l’évolution de la TCC en sept périodes marquées chacune par des changements conceptuels ou théoriques majeurs. Elle révèle qu’à l’origine, John Sweller estimait que la charge cognitive résultait des activités de traitement de l’information, alors que dans la version contemporaine de la TCC, il estime qu‘elle s’explique essentiellement par la quantité d’information à traiter simultanément. L’analyse conceptuelle révèle plusieurs enjeux conceptuels majeurs, à travers de nombreuses incohérences, contradictions, omissions et approximations dans la conceptualisation des cinq construits. 1) Une considération insuffisante des détails du fonctionnement de la mémoire de travail dans l’évaluation de la charge cognitive, et particulièrement la faible place faite au rôle des opérations mentales et à la distribution de la charge cognitive dans le temps et entre des sous-tâches. 2) Une utilisation incohérente de la terminologie. 3) Une confusion fréquente des effets de la charge cognitive inutile et des effets de la surcharge cognitive. 4) Une incohérence dans la façon de définir la charge cognitive inutile et intrinsèque, définies sur des bases conceptuelles différentes. 5) Des problèmes multiples dans la conceptualisation et la définition des trois types de charge cognitive : intrinsèque, inutile et pertinente. 6) Des contradictions dans la façon d’évaluer la charge cognitive en termes parfois absolus et parfois relatifs. De nouvelles définitions des construits analysés et de construits connexes sont proposés, de même que des pistes de recherche future pour tester ces propositions, notamment le recours à l’analyse de tâche cognitive.",

Not only are technological competencies required for economic participation, they also facilitate creativity, self-expression, and personal fulfillment. Technology has also broadened citizenship beyond our local communities, necessitating the development of social consciousness and skills to navigate global challenges. Given the need for tools that facilitate digital competencies and social action in schools, this study investigated how passion-based making with the Internet of Things (IoT) could facilitate students’ involvement with citizenship and social justice. Over the course of a five-day makerspace camp, this study employed a qualitative multiple case study design to explore the IoT learning and social participation of ten elementary school students. The findings revealed meaningful development in participants’ understanding of concepts and concerns related to IoT, as well as thoughtful engagement with societal challenges through the construction of socially oriented IoT artifacts.",
