These characteristics have been developed using TomTom’s commercially available\nstreet map and road grade database.\nThis report includes a detailed comparison of the TomTom national road grade database relative\nto a local road grade dataset generated by Southwest Research Institute and a national elevation\ndataset publically available from the U.S. Geological Survey. This analysis concluded that the\nTomTom national road grade database was a suitable source of road grade data for purposes of\nthis study.\nUsing the TomTom national road grade database, national statistics on road grade and hill\ndistances were generated for the U.S. network of controlled access highways. These statistical\ndistributions were then weighted using data provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection\nAgency on activity of medium- and heavy-duty trucks on controlled access highways.\nThe national activity-weighted road grade and hill distance distributions were then used as\ntargets for development of a handful of sample grade profiles potentially to be used in the U.S.\nEnvironmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Model certification tool as well\nas in dynamometer testing of medium- and heavy duty vehicles and their powertrains.\nFuture work in this area may include the development of a highway drive cycle with transient\nspeeds aligned to reflect real-world operation of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles on controlled\naccess highways. positioning system (GPS) data loggers. The survey focused on the distribution of daily driving distance, number of trips, and parking time. Second-by-second data on vehicle location and speed for 112 private cars were collected. The data covered 2,003 travel days, from June 2012 to March 2013, and nearly 10,000 km for a total of 4,892 trips. The trips covered six major urban and suburban areas in Beijing. The survey results showed average daily driving distances of 31.4, 39.1, and 48 km, and average single trip distances of 13.1, 15.1, and 17.2 km, respectively, on workdays, weekends, andholidays in Beijing urban areas. Average daytime parking times were 5.78, 3.39, and 3.12 h, and average numbers of daily trips were 2.3, 2.6, and 2.8; about 60 % of the vehicles parked last at home, starting from 17:30 to 22:30. These results were used to evaluate electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) deployment. A vehicle with a 60-km all-electric range (AER) could meet 70 % of daily driving demands. However, EVs with double the AER, such as the Nissan Leaf and Honda Fit, could only increase daily travel by EVs by 20 %. Based on Beijing’s daily driving distance distribution, the estimated average fuel consumptions for the PHEV10 (Toyota Prius) and PHEV40 (Chevrolet Volt) are 2.92 and 1.08 L per 100 km (L/100 km), respectively. perspective of the rapid speed fluctuations, and assess its impact on vehicle fuel economy. The speed fluctuation can be divided into two portions: the large-scale low frequency speed trace which follows the ongoing traffic and road characteristics, and the small-scale rapid speed fluctuations normally related to the driver's experience, style and ability to anticipate future events. The latter represent to some extent the driver aggressiveness and it is well known to affect the vehicle energy consumption and component duty cycles. Therefore, the rapid speed fluctuations are the focus of this paper. Driving data collected with the GPS devices are widely adopted for study of real-world fuel economy, or the impact on electrified vehicle range and component duty cycles. However, the accompanying signal noise poses a challenge, and needs to be separated from realistic rapid speed fluctuations. Filtering is commonly used, but aggressive smoothing technique can lead to loss of useful driving information. In contrast, mild smoothing technique can lead to under-filtering and inclusion of redundant information. The main contribution of this paper is a proposed metric, denoted as “Ripple Aggressiveness”, to quantify the rapid speed fluctuations over a drive cycle based on the Fourier analysis. This metric allows assessment of the filtering level, and detection of over-filtering, or under-filtering. The data used to develop and demonstrated the new technique are from the 2001∼2002 Southern California Household Travel Survey, 2010∼2012 California Household Travel Survey, 2001∼2005 Michigan Road Departure Crash Warning System Field Operational Tests, and EPA dynamometer drive schedules. FASTSim provides a quick and simple approach to compare powertrains and estimate the impact of technology improvements on light- and heavy-duty vehicle efficiency, performance, cost, and battery life. The input data for most light-duty vehicles can be automatically imported. Those inputs can be modified to represent variations of the vehicle or powertrain. The vehicle and its components are then simulated through speed-versus-time drive cycles. At each time step, FASTSim accounts for drag, acceleration, ascent, rolling resistance, each powertrain component's efficiency and power limits, and regenerative braking. Conventional vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, all-electric vehicles, compressed natural gas vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles are included. Powertrains with electric-traction drive can optionally be simulated using electric roadway technologies such as dynamic wireless power transfer. FASTSim also has an interface for running large batches of real-world drive cycles. FASTSim's calculation framework and balance among detail, accuracy, and speed enable it to simulate thousands of driven miles in minutes. The key components and vehicle outputs have been validated by comparing the model outputs to test data for many different vehicles to provide confidence in the results. A graphical user interface makes FASTSim easy and efficient to use.
