"abstractNote": "Background: Social recovery capital (SRC) refers to resources and supports gained through relationships and is vital to adolescent addiction recovery. Much is known about how substance use relates to social networks, but little is known about how other dimensions of social networks influence recovery (e.g., network size/exposure, degree of conflict). Methods: This mixed-methods study sampled 28 adolescents who received treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorder (14–19 yrs.: 71% male; M = 17.32 yrs., SD = 1.33; White 82%): 20 were recovery high school (RHS) students. Adolescents completed a social identity map for addiction recovery (SIM-AR), survey, and interview. Qualitative data were content analyzed and the data from the SIM-AR were quantified. Results: On average, participants reported belonging to five distinct groups within their network (Range, 2–9; SD = 1.63; M = 27.89 people, SD = 20.09). Of their social network connections, 51% drank alcohol and 46% used other substances, on average. Larger networks involved more conflict (r = 0.57). Participants were more likely to spend more time with groups that had greater proportions of non-substance-using members. These linkages were stronger for RHS than for non-RHS students. Qualitative analyses revealed that youth reported their recovery-oriented groups as supportive, but some reported that their substance-using friends also supported their recovery. Discussion: SIM-AR was a useful measurement tool, and, through qualitative interviews, we identified unique aspects of youths’ social networks important for further examination. Research with recovering youth should examine SRC-related elements within their networks including relationship quality, belonging, and conflict, alongside the substance use behaviors of network members.",

"abstractNote": "In summarizing the proceedings of a longitudinal meeting of experts in substance use disorders (SUDs) among young adults, this special article reviews principles of care concerning recovery support services for this population. Young adults in recovery from SUDs can benefit from a variety of support services throughout the process of recovery. These services take place in both traditional clinical settings and settings outside the health system, and they can be delivered by a wide variety of nonprofessional and paraprofessional individuals. In this article, we communicate fundamental points related to guidance, evidence, and clinical considerations about 3 basic principles for recovery support services: (1) given their developmental needs, young adults affected by SUDs should have access to a wide variety of recovery support services regardless of the levels of care they need, which could range from early intervention services to medically managed intensive inpatient services; (2) the workforce for addiction services for young adults benefits from the inclusion of individuals with lived experience in addiction; and (3) recovery support services should be integrated to promote recovery most effectively and provide the strongest possible social support.",

"abstractNote": "More than 80% of college students are drinking. More than a third do drugs. For students struggling with substance abuse, temptations on campus—and stressors that can derail abstinence—run high. In response, several colleges and universities offer effective support in the form of recovery communities, which are more appropriate to campus settings and young adult development than traditional 12-step groups alone. Substance Abuse Recovery in College explains in authoritative detail what collegiate recovery communities are, the types of services they provide, and their role in the context of campus life, with extended examples from Texas Tech University’s influential CSAR (Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery) program. Using data from both conventional surveys and end-of-day daily Palm Pilot assessments as well as focus groups, the book examines community members’ experiences. In addition, the importance of a positive relationship between the recovery community and the school administration is emphasized. Topics covered include: • The growing need for recovery services at colleges. • How recovery communities support abstinence and relapse prevention. • Who are community members and their addiction and treatment histories. • Daily lives of young adults in a collegiate recovery community. • Challenges and opportunities in establishing recovery communities on campus. • Building abstinence support into an academic curriculum. This volume offers clear insights and up-close perspectives of importance to developmental and clinical child psychologists, social workers, higher education policymakers, and related professionals in human development, family studies, student services, college health care, and community services.",

"abstractNote": "The authors aimed to gain information on (1) the challenges for recovering students on a university campus and (2) the most helpful components of a collegiate recovery program. The 15 students in the study were all in recovery from substance abuse. They entered the university and also entered the campus recovery program either in fall 2002 or fall 2003. Semistructured interviews were conducted with students multiple times during their first academic year. Participants identified several challenges on the university campus. Many believed they would have dropped out of school or relapsed without the support of the recovery program, and they described aspects of the program that were particularly important to them. Support from a campus recovery program is essential for many recovering students. There are a variety of recovery program components that can foster the sense of community that was so important to the students in this study.",

"abstractNote": "Recovery high schools are secondary schools designed specifically for students in recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs) or dependency (Association of Recovery Schools [ARS], 2016). Many adolescents in recovery also suffer from trauma and other mental health disorders. This qualitative study investigated the social-emotional learning and therapeutic supports that Massachusetts recovery high school teachers perceived to be the most effective for adolescents with substance use and other co-occurring disorders. Co-occurring disorders are used to define the diagnoses of students with both a drug and/or alcohol disorder and a mental health disorder. This research study was informed by a comprehensive review of the literature related to the history and effectiveness of recovery high schools (RHS). The literature suggested a need for social-emotional learning and therapeutic supports but indicated a gap in strategies for best practices. Interviews were conducted with 12 Massachusetts recovery high school teachers. Teacher participants were asked to respond to 12 questions based on providing effective supports, creating a sense of safety and belonging in the classroom, and changing behavior that prevents student success. This study revealed the importance of constructing a positive school climate, disclosed challenges working in recovery education, and provided recommendations for supporting students in their recovery, academic success, and personal growth. The findings from this study will support teachers in utilizing the most effective therapeutic supports to promote recovery and academic achievement in Massachusetts RHS. Conducting a more thorough investigation to include observations and student data may be used to inform policies and practices.",

"abstractNote": "Recovery high schools (RHSs) provide educational programming and therapeutic support services for young people in recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs). The objectives of this study were to examine whether students with SUDs who attended RHSs report less delinquency and substance use than students with SUDs who attended non-RHSs, and how students’ social problem solving styles might moderate those associations. Participants were students from a longitudinal quasi-experimental study of adolescents who enrolled in high schools after receiving treatment for SUDs. The propensity-score balanced sample included 260 adolescents (143 in RHSs, 117 in non-RHSs) enrolled in schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Texas (M age = 16; 83% White; 44% female). Negative binomial regression models were used to compare delinquency and substance use outcomes for RHS and non-RHS students at 6-month and 12-month follow-ups. The results indicated that students attending RHSs after discharge from SUD treatment reported less frequent delinquent behavior while intoxicated, and fewer days of substance use relative to students attending non-RHSs. Negative problem solving styles moderated the effect of RHS attendance on substance use outcomes, with RHSs providing minimal beneficial effects for those students endorsing maladaptive problem solving styles. We conclude that RHSs offer a promising continuing care approach for adolescents in recovery from SUD problems, but may vary in their effectiveness for students with impulsive, careless, or avoidant problem solving styles.",

Eighty alumni (55%) participated in a survey that included the self-administered Addiction Severity Index (McLellan et al. 2006). Results. Thirty two (40%) respondents reported no drug or alcohol use in the last 30 days. The total increased to 59% when those who were drinking alcohol but no longer using illicit drugs were included among the favorable outcomes. More than 90% of all subjects reported enrolling in college, and seven graduated. Conclusion. This exploratory study found relatively high rates of sobriety and educational attainment among participants, and paves the way for future research on outcomes of recovery school graduates. It also provides compelling evidence that the recovery school is meeting its stated mission to serve adolescents who have completed a recognized substance abuse treatment program and are committed to maintaining sobriety and earning a high school diploma in a chemical-free environment that is both supportive and safe. "abstractNote": "BACKGROUND: Although oxycodone is one of the most widely available and abused opioids, little published information exists on the abuse of immediate-release oxycodone. OBJECTIVE: To obtain information on abuse of oxycodone and the effectiveness of abuse-deterrent strategies, especially for immediate-release oxycodone, we surveyed oxycodone abuse patterns in a population of experienced opioid abusers. METHODS: Students or recent graduates of two substance abuse recovery high schools in Massachusetts were surveyed on abuse behaviors with short-acting single-entity oxycodone (e.g., Roxicodone), short-acting combination oxycodone (e.g., Percocet), and extended-release oxycodone. RESULTS: Twenty-four students completed surveys. Mean age was 17.7 years (range 16-19), and mean age at first abuse of oxycodone was 15 (range 13-18). Overall, 56% of students reported oxycodone as their favorite prescription opioid to abuse. The primary preferred method of abuse of all oxycodone formulations was intranasal administration: 83% of single-entity oxycodone abusers preferred intranasal administration compared with 67% of combination oxycodone abusers and 69% of extended-release oxycodone abusers. Approximately half of our respondents preferred to ingest oxycodone orally, 25-38% of respondents swallowed the pill intact, and another 13-17% chewed the pill before swallowing. Maximum dose ever abused at one time ranged from 15 to 400 mg. Most respondents had abused \\geq60 mg of oxycodone at a time. CONCLUSIONS: In this small study, adolescent oxycodone abusers use high quantities of oxycodone at a time, alter routes of administration for not only extended-release but also immediate-release products, and commonly abuse single-entity oxycodone products. Abuse-deterrent formulations may be one strategy for addressing such behaviors",
