development. This paper outlines service-learning projects in LIS education undertaken in South Africa since 2000, as part of the national Community-Higher-Education-Service Partnerships (CHESP) initiative. It focuses on the service-learning project undertaken at the former University of Natal and will refer briefly to a similar project at the University of the Western Cape. The Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of Natal chose the Inadi community, specifically the Emzamweni High School, as the service learning site in this area, as it was both rural and historically disadvantaged. The University of the Western Cape chose sites in the Delft and Belville South areas to work in public libraries. The paper focuses on the results and experiences of the participatory action research carried out by the Post-Graduate Diploma in Information Studies students in the Inadi community and reflects on some of the opportunities and challenges of service-learning as an arena for research, curriculum reform and community development in South Africa. It will assess the feasibility of incorporating service learning into the LIS curriculum. The research and practice embarked upon in a real-life situation for the students serves to inform both the needs of information provision to the community and the need to build up a body of service-learning research which is unique to the South African context. course-integrated blog is used to facilitate the learning of information literacy skills. It also reports on how the effectiveness of the blog is evaluated. Design/methodology/approach – The blog is made the centerpiece of library support offered to a first-year politics course. With the support of the faculty member involved, students are required to post answers to weekly library research skills questions posted to the blog. The quality of student responses is examined using a simple assessment rubric. Also, a survey is administered to students to determine perceived usefulness. Findings – The evaluation of blog posts shows that the quality of answers is generally very good. Students put effort into their responses and most give accurate and thorough answers. The results of the survey indicate that most students feel the blog is useful to their learning, both in terms of general information skills, and in terms of helping research the term paper for the course. Research limitations/implications – These results reflect just one course at a single university, therefore it is not possible to use the findings to make generalizations. The study could serve as a starting point for further inquiry into the evaluation of blogs as a support tool. Originality/value – While others have reported on using blogs in a similar manner, this study also attempts a thorough evaluation of the efficacy of the blog in helping students learn. Given the positive results of this evaluation, librarians could consider using blogs and other Web 2.0 tools to engage students in their own learning.", "publicationTitle": "Reference Services "Peer mentoring for academic credit is a well established component of the Bachelor of Health Sciences\n(BHSc) program at McMaster University. Although the librarians have always been actively engaged in\ncurriculum design and planning, it is only recently that they have turned to peer mentors as a means of\nsupporting student learning in the area of information literacy. The purpose of this presentation is to tell the\nstory of how the BHSc Liaison Librarian worked with students to develop an Information Literacy and\nLibrary Research Practicum course that embraces the same small group, self-directed, inquiry model that\nserves as the foundation for the entire BHSc curriculum.\nWithin the BHSc program, information literacy embraces both practical skills (finding and evaluating\ninformation) and theoretical discourse (understanding the context in which information is created and\nreflecting on how the research process impacts information demand). Throughout the program's 10 year\nhistory, this definition has been interwoven into the inquiry based curriculum, resulting in a variety of\ndemands being placed on the library. However, with the demand has come increased confusion as to how and\nwhen the librarian should participate in student learning activities and what kinds of interventions should be\nplanned to facilitate the best possible learning outcomes.\nFrom this confusion emerged the idea to establish a peer library mentorship program. The purpose of the\nprogram has been to create a course through which librarians work with 4th year student mentors to develop\nenhanced information literacy skills. In turn, the mentors are able to take what they have learned and apply it\nto their knowledge and experience as it pertains to the uniqueness of their program's curriculum, research\ndemands, online learning communities and population characteristics.\nThe first cohort of mentors will complete their work in April, 2010, and have promised to leave a legacy\ndocument for the next generation of mentors.
