The Ragusa Road, which linked Istanbul to Dubrovnik (Croatia), became the primary land axis across the region, despite the existence of shorter and less topographically challenging alternatives. The network of Ragusan merchants, diplomats and spies was widespread in the Mediterranean, and was especially dense in the cities of the central Balkans, including those located on the nodes of exchange found on the Ragusa Road.
