socialist-feminist union that organized workers in unorganized industries in Canada in the 1970s and 1980s. I look at SORWUC's role in Canadian labour history in general, and its efforts to organize workers in the service industry in particular. My central thesis is that SORWUC's socialist-feminist unionism and commitment to organizing unorganized workers positioned the union as radically different from the mainstream labour movement. This difference both helped and hindered the union. Specifically, SORWUC's experiences organizing workers at Bimini pub and Muckamuck restaurant in British Columbia demonstrate that although its alternative structure and strategies aided organizing and strike efforts, these factors made little difference in the union's dealings with the labour relations boards and the courts: in both cases, the action or inaction of the state ultimately determined the outcome. Although SORWUC no longer exists, it remains an important historical example of how workers in Canada have been and can be organized. Indeed, few scholarly works have offered an in-depth examination of the events and fewer still have examined the role played by the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers in organizing the popular series of four annual concerts that were attended by tens of thousands of adoring Robeson fans, many of them Mine-Mill members there to support the singer-activist in the continuing struggle to restore his freedom to travel. This paper attempts to understand more clearly the significance of the concerts to the trade union movement and to resistance movements on the left. On a local union scale the paper attempts to answer several questions: What motivated Harvey Murphy, a life-long Communist and friend of Robeson, to mount such an ambitious undertaking in defiance of national governments on both sides of the border? Why did Mine-Mill activists respond with such ferocity to the news that the black entertainer was not going to be allowed to cross the Canada-United States border to sing at the Vancouver Mine-Mill convention on 1 February 1952? Why were some non-Mine-Mill labour leaders reluctant to support the concerts? On a broader political scale, the paper attempts to explain why the American and Canadian authorities choose to prevent Robeson from performing. What were the political issues involved in government efforts to silence Robeson and Mine-Mill, one of the eleven unions that had been newly purged from the Congress of Industrial Unions (CIO) and This paper explores examples of that historical literary tradition through a study of smelter worker poetry found in the pages of The Commentator, a trade union newspaper published in Trail by Local 480 of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers (Mine Mill) in the late 1930s and early 1940s as labour activists were striving to rekindle the union spirit at the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada (CM&S Company), then the world's largest lead and zinc smelter and a key munitions manufacturer during the First and Second World Wars.
