This research is the first systematic metric and morphological analysis of this material, with the results indicating the predominance of a single murine species, though the finds from the lower interval (0.7 million years ago) are for the most part significantly smaller than those recovered from the ~70,000-year-younger upper interval. Comparison of our findings with the analyses of the Flores endemic recent and fossil giant rats undertaken by Hooijer in 1957 and Musser in 1981 indicates the Mata Menge large murine maxillary molars, and, in particular, those from the lower interval are very similar to the limited Middle Pleistocene material Musser designated to be Hooijeromys nusatenggara. However, the associated Mata Menge mandibular molars are most similar to, though smaller than, the mid-Holocene Papagomys theodorverhoeveni. Previously, the earliest evidence for such cold-adapted species in the Iberian Peninsula dated back to Marine Isotope Stage 6 (MIS 6, ~191–123 ka). This paper reports the discovery of a reindeer (Rangifer) tooth from Unit GIII of the Galería site at the Atapuerca-Trinchera site complex, dated to MIS 8 (~300–243 ka). This find is significant as it represents not only the oldest evidence of glacial fauna in the Iberian Peninsula but also the southernmost occurrence of reindeer in Europe of this age. The presence of Rangifer at this latitude (42°21′ N) during MIS 8 suggests that the glacial conditions affected the Iberian fauna earlier and with greater intensity than previously understood. Over the subsequent climatic cycles, cold-adapted species spread further south, reaching Madrid (40°20′) during the penultimate glacial period and the province of Granada (37°01′) during the last glacial maximum. The coexistence of human fossils and lithic artefacts within Units GII and GIII at Galería indicates that early humans also inhabited these glacial environments at Atapuerca. movements constitute a significant driver of cultural change in prehistoric societies. In recent years, sulfur isotopes have emerged as a valuable approach for distinguishing human/animal provenance. However, the scarcity of sulfur isotope studies and the lack of baseline maps predicting their variations in the landscape limit our current knowledge about mobility behaviours. Here, we first present the δ \n 34 \n S isotope values of 142 human and animal bone collagen samples from coastal and inland funerary sites located in northern Iberia. Second, to apply a multivariate machine-learning regression and a random forest model to predict sulfur isotope variations across Iberia, we compiled the sulfur isotope data from 554 specimens of 41 archaeological locations from Holocene contexts. Our research demonstrated that population movement between coastal and inland locations is observable through differences in the δ \n 34 \n S isotope values of individuals linked to their respective environments, suggesting migrations on both sides of the Cantabrian mountain range. The resulting isoscape model demonstrates that sulfur isotope patterns are highly predictable, with 82% of the sulfur isotope variation explained by only four variables: elevation, Bouguer anomaly, distance from the coast, and strontium isotope values. However, the suite of biological traits that reshaped horses during domestication remains unclear. We scanned an extensive horse genome time series for selection signatures at 266 markers associated with key traits. We detected a signature of positive selection at \n ZFPM1 \n —known to be a modulator of behavior in mice—occurring ~5000 years ago (ya), suggesting that taming was one of the earliest steps toward domestication of horses. Intensive selection at \n GSDMC \n began ~4750 ya with the domestication bottleneck, leading regulatory variants to high frequency by ~4150 ya. \n GSDMC \n genotypes are linked to body conformation in horses and to spinal anatomy, motor coordination, and muscular strength in mice. While Spanish colonists brought horses to the Caribbean decades earlier, settlement of the English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, was among the first dispersals of horses to the eastern seaboard. Archaeozoological analysis of identifiable domestic equid remains from two contexts associated with the initial occupation of Jamestown demonstrates intense processing and consumption of the first Jamestown horses during the “Starving Time” winter of 1609. Osteological and biomolecular study of these equid remains demonstrates their successful reproduction at the colony and use in transport activities and identifies an adult domestic donkey with mixed European and West African ancestry, possibly supplied through undocumented exchange during a transatlantic stopover. Among the taxa identified at several archaeological sites, a particular group of molluscs stands out: the scaphopods. This paper provides an exhaustive review of scaphopod (Mollusca, Scaphopoda) fossils recovered from archaeological sites in southern Iberia, particularly two sites: Cueva del Hoyo de la Mina and El Tesoro, both in the province of Málaga (southern Spain). The importance of using fossils of this mollusc from the Magdalenian to the Neolithic period has been confirmed at these sites. While the Iberian Peninsula is home to a rich diversity of scaphopod species, with 24 species belonging to nine genera during the Neogene period alone, our analysis reveals that only two species, Paradentalium inaequale and Paradentalium sexangulum, were chosen for symbolic purposes. Additionally, we provide a synthesis of the presence of these species and this group in other Iberian sites. A total of 258 scaphopods were found at eight Iberian archaeological sites ranging from the Solutrean to the Bronze Age. We also discuss some of their cultural connotations. The aim of the present paper is to compare the proportions and use of cattle, sheep, and goats at noble and monastic sites dating from the 13th to 16th centuries. Out of 25,739 animal remains, 8923 were identified, with cattle (N = 2819) and small ruminants (N = 1791) among the most frequent species. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in species distribution between some monastic and noble sites. Cattle were the dominant species at two monasteries and three castles, while small ruminants were the most frequent species at one monastic and one noble site. Age profiles suggested a greater use of subadult and adult animals across all sites, suggesting breeding for secondary products. Estimated height at the withers was 108.5 cm for cattle, 60 cm for sheep, and 65.6 cm for goats. Logarithmic bone width analysis showed no statistically significant differences in animal size between site types, though some noble sites had larger individuals. Besides an understanding that caprines dominated the animal economy, we have little knowledge of how these animals were managed. The site was discontinuously occupied from the Neolithic to Sassanian periods (6500 BCE to 200 CE). As one of the longest occupied archaeological sites in Iran, Tepe Yahya provides a unique opportunity to examine whether diversity in caprine management accompanied the site’s development and expanded need for provisioning. We examine the diet of 254 sheep and goats between 6500 and 2000 BCE, the Neolithic to Bronze Age, using carbon ( \n δ \n 13 \n C) and nitrogen ( \n δ \n 15 \n N) stable isotopic analysis, and estimate the percentage of C \n 3 \n plants in animal diets using a custom isotopic mixing model developed in \n \n R \n \n with “simmr.” While isotopic averages indicate diet was consistent through time, dietary outliers demonstrate the simultaneous presence of multiple management strategies, with certain animals receiving limited access to the full variety of plants available in the landscape. Goats and sheep show statistically significant differences in the percentage of C \n 3 \n plants in their diets, with goats always eating higher portions of C \n 3 \n plants than sheep. These differences are likely a result of human interference rather than substantial environmental changes, which are not reflected in the isotopic values. Increasing isotopic variability over time points to a broader array of caprine management strategies, through greater environmental use or more discrete herds, as well as the introduction of nitrogen-fixing plants into select animal diets. However, complicated exchanges of faunas between continents in the Late Cenozoic have made it challenging to identify general patterns of faunal evolution and migration. They are shaped by a broad range of economic and social activities and can be described as networks collectively created by diverse human and non-human actors. To recognize and comprehend these networks, a broader perspective is necessary – one that goes beyond economic transactions and human actors.The second topic, market traces, demonstrates that certain market activities leave material evidence that can be identified using various archaeological methods, including architectural investigations, analysis of small finds as well as applications from geoarchaeology and archaeozoology. However, reading material traces of marketplaces requires a cautious approach with consideration of the specific context.Finally, with regard to the third topic, taphonomy, various natural and anthropogenic factors strongly influence material remains of marketplaces by mixing, relocating, transforming or completely destroying them.
