"abstractNote": "Salt lakes are geographically widespread, numerous and a significant part of the world's inland aquatic ecosystems. They are important natural assets with considerable aesthetic, cultural, economic, recreational, scientific, conservation and ecological values. Some features, notably the composition of the biota, uniquely distinguish them from other aquatic ecosystems. The paper reviews the nature of environmental impacts and their effects upon salt lakes. Its aims are two-fold: to draw attention to the extensive damage that salt lakes have now undergone, and to indicate the likely status of salt lakes in 2025. Salt lakes develop as the termini of inland drainage basins where hydrological inputs and outputs are balanced. These conditions occur in arid and semi-arid regions (approximately one-third of total world land area). Many human activities threaten or have already impacted salt lakes, especially surface inflow diversions, salinization and other catchment activities, mining, pollution, biological disturbances (e.g. introduction of exotic species), and anthropogenically-induced climatic and atmospheric changes. The effects of such activities are always adverse and include changes to the natural character of salt lakes, loss of biodiversity and fundamental limnological changes. The effects are geographically widespread, mostly irreversible, and degrade the values of salt lakes. Four salt lakes are discussed, namely the Aral Sea in central Asia, Mono Lake in California, USA, and Lake Eyre and Lake Cantara South, in Australia. By 2025, most natural salt lakes will have undergone some adverse change. Many permanent ones will have decreased in size and increased in salinity, and many unnatural saline water-bodies will have appeared. In certain regions, many seasonally-filled salt lakes are likely to be drier for longer periods. The extent to which episodically-filled salt lakes will change by 2025 will largely depend upon the nature of climate change in arid regions. Objective cost/benefit analyses of adversely affecting salt lakes are rare, and international bodies have not properly recognized salt lakes as important inland aquatic ecosystems. To redress this situation, there is a need to raise awareness of: (1) the values of salt lakes, (2) the nature of threats and impacts from human activities, and (3) their special management requirements. More effective management and conservation measures need to be implemented. Mono Lake provides an example of what can be achieved in the conservation of salt lakes. Its conservation was largely brought about by (1) the commitment of a non-governmental organization which recognized its non-economic values, (2) the freedom to express views, (3) a legal system which took account of non-economic values, and (4) a legislature which implemented judicial findings. The conservation of Mono Lake was difficult; the conservation of other salt lakes is likely to be even more difficult. Only international pressure from appropriate organizations will be effective for the conservation of many.",

The causes and distribution of anthropogenic salinisation, the salinisation of freshwater lakes, rivers and streams, and increases in the salinity of large, permanent saline lakes are discussed. The impacts of anthropogenic salinisation are far-reaching, increasing, deleterious and largely irreparable. Environmental, social and environmental costs are high. "abstractNote": "Australia is a land of salt lakes and despite low human population density, many lakes are adversely impacted by a range of factors. Secondary salinisation is the most pernicious force degrading lakes, especially in south-west Western Australia where up to 30% of the landscape is predicted to be affected. Mining also impinges on many salt lakes in this state, mainly through the dewatering of saline groundwater. Exploitation of groundwater for irrigation caused some lakes in Victoria, Australia, to dry, especially the significant Red Rock Complex. Global climate change will result in new water balances in endorheic lakes, with most having less water, particularly the seasonal lakes of southern Australia. This has already happened in Lake Corangamite, Victoria, but the prime reason is diversion of inflowing floodwater. Consequently, the lake has retreated and become salinised compromising its status as a Ramsar site. Various other lakes suffer from enhanced sedimentation, have introduced biota or their catchments are being disturbed to their detriment. Enlightened management should be able to maintain some important lakes in an acceptable condition, but, for most others, the future is bleak.",

"abstractNote": "ABSTRACT The results of a 2-year study on the impact of oil discharges on the fishery resources of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, are presented. The lake system is described, together with relevant water quality, hydrographic, ecological, and fishery resources data. Sources of other types of pollution, domestic and industrial, are described, and their potential impact on the system are discussed. Analysis of environmental samples-water, sediments, and biota-showed low concentrations of oil in lake water and no detectable accumulation of petroleum-derived hydrocarbons in muscle tissue of selected commercial species. The occurrence of bituminous materials in the sediments, particularly in the oil production area, suggests that the natural processes of volatilization, biodegradation, and sedimentation are the major mechanisms for the removal of oil from the surface waters. Laboratory studies on the toxicity of oil indicate that relatively high concentrations of oil are required to cause mortality. Extraction of oil with lake water, however, indicated that concentrations of total light aromatic fractions were toxic in the parts per million range. The rapid loss, in a few hours, of light hydrocarbons from surface films of oil to the atmosphere was shown to reduce the toxicity to organisms significantly. Examination of the limited fisheries data available does not suggest that the resources are being depleted. However, consideration of the potential impact of nonpetroleum wastes indicates that they are contributing to the degradation of the water quality which, if unchecked, may subsequently reduce the biological resources of the lake.",

By reason of continuous existence and relatively stable ecological conditions millions years those lakes have a unique collection of flora and fauna. In this paper is presented biodiversity of macrophyte vegetation from Lake Prespa, Lake Ohrid and Lake Skadar. In those three lakes macrophyte vegetation is distributed in zones (belts). The biodiversity of macrophytes is different in those lakes and it is in direct dependence of different altitudes, lakes surfaces and lakes depths.",

"abstractNote": "Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the predicted scenarios of Central Asian water wars and catastrophic nuclear accidents have failed to materialize. However, the Aral Sea continues to shrink apace, and dangerous Soviet-built nuclear reactors have since proliferated in the former eastern bloc. These seemingly paradoxical outcomes can in part be attributed to the framing of these environmental issues as security matters by leading international regulatory, aid and lending institutions. Integrating these environmental concerns with the realist worldview of security studies systematically emphasized security dimensions at the expense of ecological concerns even amongst organizations distant from traditional defense affairs. This article proposes that international security strategy in this period is one of environmental appeasement defined as the systematic granting of ecologically unfriendly concessions in order to reduce short-term security risks. The article presents evidence that this appeasement strategy generated seemingly impressive results in terms of ameliorating short-term security risks, while actually exacerbating the underlying ecological situation. The article argues that while the foundational environmental risks remain unaddressed, the associated security threats have likewise not been ultimately resolved.",

"abstractNote": "Present knowledge concerning the Japanese ancient Lake Biwa is briefly summarized, and extant and potential threats to its well-being are documented. From this example of Lake Biwa, strengths and weaknesses in our knowledge of other ancient lakes and the problems that they face were identified. Several areas of concern were evident.\n\nKnowledge of the geological history of ancient lakes is uneven, as is the accuracy and degree of detail of geochronological information available. This greatly complicates meaningful results from studies of palaeohydrology, palaeobiology and palaeoecology. In all ancient lakes, future research must place greater emphasis on these areas. Such studies can both unravel and facilitate an understanding of the history of the lake and the reconstruction of evolutionary scenarios.\n\nAncient lakes are recognized as hotspots of diversity and centres of endemism, but in no ancient lake has an adequate inventory of biodiversity been compiled to test hypotheses concerning patterns of diversity or its regulation. More effort is needed in this area. The importance of such baseline data is exemplified by the case of Lake Biwa, where the absence of quantitative studies of the native fish communities before, during or after the introduction and subsequent population explosions of largemouth bass and bluegill has prevented any meaningful evaluation of the effects of these alien fishes on the native fauna.\n\nLake Biwa has had more ecological insults inflicted upon it than any of the other ancient lakes of the world; physical, chemical and biotic perturbations, including alien introductions and overfishing, have all taken their toll on the lake ecosystem and continue to do so. Measures to ameliorate some of these perturbations are suggested, some of which will require heightened ecological awareness and brave decision making on the part of the authorities who manage this ecological treasure. It is hoped that the organizations and governments responsible for the well-being of the other ancient lakes of the world will heed the example of Lake Biwa when arriving at management decisions concerning the unique biotas and resources of which they have change.",

"abstractNote": "Lake Prespa, together with Lake Ohrid is between oldest lakes in Europe. Their origin is back in Pliocene period. It consists of two lakes, Lake Big Prespa (surface area of 273 km; 853 m a.s.l.) and Lake Small Prespa (47 km, 857 m a.s.l). Lake Big Prespa is shared between Albania, Greece and Macedonia, and Lake Small Prespa between Albania and Greece.Catchment area of Lake Prespa is 1,200 km2. During last 20 years the water level of Lake Prespa considerably decreased as result of climate change accompanied by irrational human's use of the local inhabitants. Decrease of the surface level cosed sharp changrs of It's trophic state. In this article are presented results of the microbiological investigations (facultative oligotrophic bacteria, and some of the fisiological groups of bacteria), transparency in Lake Prespa during 2001–2006. Aim of these investigations was to find out its state in conditions of continuosly decrease of the lake volume. The index FO/H that indicate the capability of its water selfpurification as well.",

"abstractNote": "Human impacts on the few ancient lakes of the world must be assessed, as any change can lead to an irreversible loss of endemic communities. In such an assessment, the sensitivity of Lake Ohrid (Macedonia/Albania; surface area A = 358 km2, volume V = 55 km3, > 200 endemic species) to three major human impacts—water abstraction, eutrophication, and global warming—is evaluated.\n\nIt is shown that ongoing eutrophication presents the major threat to this unique lake system, even under the conservative assumption of an increase in phosphorus (P) concentration from the current 4.5 to a potential future 9 mg P m−3. Eutrophication would lead to a significant reduction in light penetration, which is a prerequisite for endemic, deep living plankton communities. Moreover, a P increase to 9 mg P m−3 would create deep water anoxia through elevated oxygen consumption and increase in the water column stability due to more mineralization of organic material. Such anoxic conditions would severely threaten the endemic bottom fauna. The trend toward anoxia is further amplified by the predicted global warming of 0.04°C yr–1, which significantly reduces the frequency of complete seasonal deep convective mixing compared to the current warming of 0.006°C yr−1. This reduction in deep water exchange is triggered by the warming process rather than by overall higher temperatures in the lake. In contrast, deep convective mixing would be even more frequent than today under a higher temperature equilibrium, as a result of the temperature dependence of the thermal expansivity of water. Although water abstraction may change local habitats, e.g., karst spring areas, its effects on overall lake properties was shown to be of minor importance.",

"abstractNote": "Lake Prespa and Lake Ohrid, located in south-eastern Europe, are two lakes of extraordinary ecological value. Although the upstream Lake Prespa has no surface outflow, its waters reach the 160 m lower Lake Ohrid through underground hydraulic connections. Substantial conservation efforts concentrate on oligotrophic downstream Lake Ohrid, which is famous for its large number of endemic and relict species. In this paper, we present a system analytical approach to assess the role of the mesotrophic upstream Lake Prespa in the ongoing eutrophication of Lake Ohrid. Almost the entire outflow from Lake Prespa is found to flow into Lake Ohrid through karst channels. However, 65% of the transported phosphorus is retained within the aquifer. Thanks to this natural filter, Lake Prespa does not pose an immediate threat to Lake Ohrid. However, a potential future four-fold increase of the current phosphorus load from Lake Prespa would lead to a 20% increase (+0.9 mg P m−3) in the current phosphorus content of Lake Ohrid, which could jeopardize its fragile ecosystem. While being a potential future danger to Lake Ohrid, Lake Prespa itself is substantially endangered by water losses to irrigation, which have been shown to amplify its eutrophication.",

"abstractNote": "The primary production of Lake Lanao, Philippines, was studied over a 15-mo period by in situ application of C-14 and oxygen-difference techniques. Supporting data include weather, water chemistry, light penetration, and standing crop of both autotrophs and heterotrophs. A statistical treatment of production estimates precedes the presentation of data. Extensive comparison of the oxygen and C-14 methods indicates that the C-14 method as applied in Lake Lanao measures net primary production. Data from time-course experiments show no evidence of diurnal rhythms in the efficiency of photosynthesis per unit area of lake surface. Heterogeneity studies based on transect data indicate that at low to moderate levels of production, the probability that production at an index station will differ from the average for the lake on a given date by more than 30% is less than .05, while the comparable probability for high levels of production is .35. There is no significant difference between stations in mean primary production for the study period. Vertical profiles of photosynthesis exhibit light inhibition on all but the most overcast days. The threshold for inhibition at the surface is near 133 kerg/cm^2@?s during calm weather and somewhat lower in windy weather. The mean threshold for inhibition 1 m or more below the surface is lower than at the surface (101 kerg/cm^2@?s). The lake is exceptionally transparent (mean extinction coefficient, 0.38) considering its high productivity and has a vertical dispersion of production that is similar to temperate oligotrophic lakes. The characteristic is explained in terms of the low amounts of dissolved and suspended matter in the euphotic zone, high production per unit of standing crop, and great amount of mixing in the upper water column. Net primary production average 1.7 gC/m^2@?day, and gross primary production is 2.6 gC/m^2@?day. Autotrophs account for 80% of respiration in the euphotic zone. Factors controlling seasonal variation are related to resource supply rather than to temperature or biomass removal. Between 12 and 30% of seasonal variation in production can be accounted for by variations in incident light. Light limitation also occurs due to thickening of the zone of mixing during the circulation period and during storms. Nutrient supply is the dominant controlling factor during stratification. Nutrient depletion is relieved at frequent intervals by changes in the depth of mixing associated with storms. High sustained production on a low nutrient base is explained by rapid transfer of nutrients from the zone of decomposition back to the euphotic zone. General conclusions are drawn concerning the relative importance of seasonal and aperiodic variation in regulating the resource supply of temperate and tropical plankton communities.",

"abstractNote": "Four summer time-series (2003–2006) of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from MODIS imagery were used to investigate duckweed blooms and other floating vegetation in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. Preliminary findings revealed the presence of duckweed and floating vegetation in the Lake during summer in varying amounts (0–11%) that appeared to be related to satellite-derived rainfall anomalies from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SMM/I) during the previous month. The first appearance of duckweed in abundance in 2004 and its reappearance at similar levels in 2006 may indicate a response to increasing nutrient loading in the lake. The duckweed rafts may be an environmental warning of imminent ecological disaster that needs to be mitigated. MODIS data, with its daily repeat cycle and 250 m pixels showed great potential for monitoring floating vegetation in the lake.",

"abstractNote": "Environmental threats, such as habitat size reduction or environmental pollution, may not cause immediate extinction of a population but shorten the expected time to extinction. We develop a method to estimate the mean time to extinction for a density-dependent population with environmental fluctuation. We first derive a formula for a stochastic differential equation model (canonical model) of a population with logistic growth with environmental and demographic stochasticities. We then study an approximate maximum likelihood (AML) estimate of three parameters (intrinsic growth rater , carrying capacity K, and environmental stochasticity σ2e) from a time series of population size. The AML estimate of r has a significant bias, but by adopting the Monte Carlo method, we can remove the bias very effectively (bias-corrected estimate). We can also determine the confidence interval of the parameter based on the Monte Carlo method. If the length of the time series is moderately long (with 40–50 data points), parameter estimation with the Monte Carlo sampling bias correction has a relatively small variance. However, if the time series is short (less than or equal to 10 data points), the estimate has a large variance and is not reliable. If we know the intrinsic growth rater , however, the estimate of K and σ2eand the mean extinction timeT are reliable even if only a short time series is available. We illustrate the method using data for a freshwater fish, Japanese crucian carp (Carassius auratus subsp.) in Lake Biwa, in which the growth rate and environmental noise of crucian carp are estimated using fishery records.",
