A short 18-minute documentary on the nature of fair trade and it's widespread acceptance throughout the world. Directed by Philip Thompson, The Bitter Aftertaste interviews proponents and critics of the fair trade revolution as a solution to commercial production of chocolate. While fair trade associated with products has associations that make the end-consumer feel \"good\" about their consumption, it is possible that the fair trade system only consigns farmers to a role of producer/laborer/farmer for the system of wealth in the North. Desire for a life beyond cocoa production is explored among cocoa farmers at Kuapa KoKoo in Ghana, who harvest cocoa beans for Divine chocolate distributed by MD Day Chocolate Company in the United Kingdom. It also states the five standards/guarantees that reinforce and stand behind a fair trade designation on a cocoa product. While fairly compensating producers for the cultivation of cocoa for predominantly Western/Northern consumption has sought to rectify a system that has larger cheated farmers, the fair trade initiative in Western cocoa consumption patterns is looked at a little more closely in this documentary to unpack the way fair trade organizations rely on traditional farming methods to keep African farmers conscripted to a life of cocoa production that does not equal the privilege that resides on the other end of this equation.
