            "abstractNote": "Managing fishing effort remains a central challenge in achieving sustainability in many fisheries, particularly where high-value species attract intense competition. In the Indian Ocean tropical tuna fishery, understanding how fishers respond to changing bio-economic conditions is essential for developing effective management. This study evaluates the influence of effort-based management measures on the size and investment behaviour of the purse-seine fleet targeting skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares). Using Random Utility Models (RUMs), we identify the key economic drivers of strategic decision-making, validate them through model evaluation, and integrate them with age-structured operating models (OMs). The RUM achieves 93% predictive accuracy, offering a robust basis for exploring policy options that balance conservation and economic objectives. Scenario testing under different cost and price conditions illustrates how economic pressures shape entry and exit decisions within the fleet.",

            "abstractNote": "Toothed whale depredation of fish caught on fishing gear raises socioeconomic and conservation concerns. It can lead to substantial losses for fishers and impacts on depredating species, but effective solutions remain limited. In this study, we implemented a spatiotemporal modelling approach to predict depredation occurrence and intensity, based on natural distribution of predators involved and fishing practices, to support mitigation strategies. Using 11 years of data from the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) longline fisheries operating around Crozet and Kerguelen islands, and generalized additive models (GAMs), we assessed the environmental and operational factors influencing catch depredation by sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and two killer whale (Orcinus orca) ecotypes: Crozet and Type-D. All models indicated strong seasonal patterns in depredation, particularly for sperm whales, whose presence decreased in winter and was primarily driven by high abundance of large toothfish. Crozet-type killer whales were associated with shallow, low-slope areas near the continental shelf, whereas Type-D killer whales were more frequent in deeper waters and near seamounts, suggesting a more offshore distribution. Longer soak times and line lengths increased killer whale depredation, likely by increasing catch accessibility. Crucially, vessels that moved more than 70 km after a depredation event significantly reduced the likelihood of further interactions with both predator species. The results indicate spatial overlap between fishing grounds and whale-preferred habitats, but highlight clear depredation hotspots within that overlap. Avoiding these areas provides fishers and managers with easy-to-implement, cost-effective options for mitigating depredation while maintaining the socio-economic viability of the activity.",

            "abstractNote": "Jellyfish blooms represent a rapid production of huge biomass with many ecological and economic consequences. However, their prediction remains elusive because the scale and dynamics of biomass accumulation are difficult to measure with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution to fully capture their magnitude. Lately, non-invasive biomass estimations based on unmanned aerial surveys of jellyfish distribution have been implemented. However, they generally occur at low altitudes and are not adequate to assess the entire spatial dimension of a jellyfish bloom. In this study, a high-resolution camera was on board of a small plane flying at 300 to 700 m altitude to map the Rhizostoma pulmo (Cnidaria; Rhizostomeae) bloom in an entire Mediterranean lagoon (38 km2), at the beginning (July), the middle (August), and the end (October) of the 2022 event. Based on image analysis tailored algorithms we computed and mapped jellyfish densities and biomass for each flight. The maximum biomass was reached in July (886 t in total, maximum biomass density of 8 kg/100 m2), followed by August (456 t, maximum biomass density of 3 kg/100 m2). October displayed the least biomass (401 t, maximum biomass density of 3 kg/100 m2). This approach provides novel insights of the R. pulmo bloom's spatial dimension and details on the jellyfish patchy distribution and temporal changes in population size structure, allowing detecting different cohorts. The aerial survey at high altitude proves to be an efficient method to monitor jellyfish blooms dynamics at coarse scale, although abundance and therefore biomass might be underestimated due to the individuals size detection limits.",

            "abstractNote": "Epigenetic marks induced by the environment play a key role in phenotypic plasticity and stress tolerance. We examined phenotypic responses in European sea bass D. labrax following a two-week exposure to fresh water (FW). FW transfer resulted in two distinct tolerance phenotypes: a tolerant (FWt) and an intolerant (FWi) group. FWi showed severe ion imbalance and pronounced stress. Using a genome-wide approach, we compared gill transcriptomic and DNA methylation profiles between phenotypes. RNA-seq analysis identified 7953 differentially expressed genes. Although ion transport pathways were not significantly altered, FWi showed profoundly modulated expression of genes involved in protein synthesis and quality control. These changes were associated with enhanced metabolic and biosynthetic processes, likely reflecting active gill remodelling under osmotic stress. In contrast, genes involved in tissue integrity, epithelial barrier function, and cell adhesion were downregulated. DNA methylation analysis revealed 5320 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) between phenotypes, with over 80% hypomethylated in FWi, suggestive of accelerated biological aging. Hypomethylation in promoters and first exons/introns was mainly linked to genes involved in cell structure and cell-cell interactions. Concordant hypomethylation and upregulation were observed for genes involved in the sphingolipid pathway, cytoskeleton organization, and cell signalling. Downregulated, hypermethylated genes were associated with GTPase activity and immune defence. Overall, our results exclude gill dysfunction as the cause of osmoregulatory failure. However, they also suggest that FW exposure may accelerate aging and reduce lifespan in FWi, potentially due to reduced plasticity and/or genetic variability.",

            "abstractNote": "While global change presents significant threats to all environments, local scale conservation efforts such as coral restoration may help mitigate reef degradation. Our study investigates the combined effects of local coral restoration versus a coral bleaching event on coral health and fish assemblages. Between January and April 2024, approximately 60–70 marine heatwave days occurred across the Bora Bora region (French Polynesia). Two experiments were conducted on the fringing reef of Bora Bora: the first surveyed coral and reef fish communities in two biotopes (shallow fringing reefs and a deeper “reef drop”) before and after the 2024 bleaching event; the second assessed fish communities at restoration sites managed by high school children (citizen science) at three time points: (i) before restoration, (ii) after restoration, and (iii) after bleaching. Our results show a significant decline in live coral on the shallow fringing reef (with or without reef restoration) after the 2024 bleaching event, whereas the deeper reef drop exhibited minimal change, highlighting a depth-related difference in reef vulnerability to thermal stress. Despite these changes in coral cover, fish abundance and richness remained relatively stable across time (before and after the bleaching event). Overall, our findings highlight the lack of resilience of coral reefs under heatwaves and provide useful insights into the limitations of small-scale restoration when faced with large-scale thermal stress. This underscores the urgent need to design local-scale restoration strategies that are better aligned with addressing global change, particularly in regions where healthy reefs are vital for the survival of local human communities.",

            "abstractNote": "Marine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by overfishing, pollution, coastal development and climate change, underscoring the need for long-term, representative information on key fish populations and habitats to inform management and policy. Underwater fish observation (UFObs) techniques, such as Underwater Visual Census (UVC), stereo-Baited Remote Underwater Video (stereo-BRUV) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), play a key role in sustaining long-term data collection. Despite technological advancements, gaps persist in understanding research focus, geographic distribution and methodological biases inherent in these methods. We conducted a scientometric analysis of 1443 peer-reviewed publications (1953–2023), employing natural language processing and network analysis to map the research landscape. We identified 15 knowledge clusters, including marine protected areas, apex predator conservation and reef ecosystems. Our findings reveal increasing use of BRUVS and ROVs in studies of marine protected areas and subsea infrastructure, while UVC remains prevalent in shallow coral reef research. Geographic representation is skewed, with the field dominated by researchers based in Australia and the United States, and underrepresented in Africa and Southeast Asia. This imbalance highlights the need for more inclusive, globally coordinated monitoring and reporting. Our results underscore the urgency of standardising protocols within each observation method and developing interoperable reporting frameworks across techniques to maximise data comparability and foster international collaboration. Addressing these challenges will strengthen the field's capacity to inform global conservation strategies and support sustainable fisheries management.",

            "abstractNote": "Basal and standard metabolic rate (BMR and SMR) are cornerstones of physiological ecology and are assumed to be relatively fixed intrinsic properties of organisms that represent the minimum energy required to sustain life. However, this assumption is conceptually flawed. Many core maintenance processes underlying SMR are temporally partitioned across sleep and wakefulness and are not continuously active. We argue that instead of representing a singular metabolic state, SMR is better defined as a shifting metabolic mosaic where maintenance functions are distributed unevenly across different sleep–wake states, including metabolically and functionally distinct phases such as non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. SMR measured during wakefulness will mainly represent ion regulation, thermoregulation, sensory processing, and substrate cycling. Meanwhile, SMR measured during sleep primarily includes processes upregulated during sleep, including protein synthesis, cellular repair, immunity, and synaptic plasticity. Our models demonstrate that SMR values measured exclusively during wake or sleep consistently over- or underestimate daily maintenance costs depending on the time spent in specific sleep states and when SMR was measured. In addition, treatment or environmental effects on the costs of specific processes may be entirely missed if metabolic measures occur during an inappropriate sleep–wake state. The temporal partitioning of maintenance processes suggests that traditional and current approaches to SMR measurement may confound true metabolic variation with individual and species-specific differences in sleep architecture, with implications for the estimation of energy budgets, trait heritability, environmental effects on metabolic rate, and metabolic scaling relationships. We propose redefining organismal maintenance costs as a time-integrated profile of metabolic demands, but also suggest that state-specific SMR measurements are appropriate if the sleep–wake measurement period aligns with that of the behavioural, physiological, or ecological context of interest. Moving beyond the fiction of a constant maintenance baseline would provide more refined insights into the bioenergetic foundations of ecological performance and evolutionary constraints.",

            "abstractNote": "IntroductionA group of brown algae, known as rockweeds, influence rocky shore ecosystems as ‘foundation species’ by increasing habitat complexity and ameliorating environmental stressors for other species. Rocky shore habitats shaped by foundational canopy-forming rockweed species are threatened by human disturbance and climate change impacts. Thus, it is of pressing conservation concern to understand how changes in rockweed densities lead to shifts in associated community structure. MethodsHere, we tested the hypothesis that higher cover of rockweed canopy correlates with higher cover, richness, and stability of understory communities, using the unique study system of California’s coast, where several species of rockweed co-occur within the mid-to-high intertidal and are experiencing severe declines. With restoration approaches being tested across taxa, we compared the role of three dominant Californian rockweed species (Silvetia compressa, Fucus distichus, Pelvetiopsis limitata) on understory composition and stability. We analyzed eleven-year time-series data across 37 sites throughout California, with plots consistently sampling both benthic and canopy communities. ResultsWe found a positive impact of rockweed cover on total benthic community cover for all three rockweed taxa. There was also a positive impact of rockweed cover on benthic richness, diversity, and stability, although this relationship was only significant for certain rockweed species. All three rockweed taxa showed a positive association with non-coralline crusts, otherwise there were species-specific positive associations with benthic taxa such as limpets, barnacles, and red turf algae.DiscussionOur findings provide evidence of Californian rockweed species playing a foundational role in the rocky intertidal as their canopy changes benthic community structure. The positive impact of rockweed cover was most pronounced in S. compressa and P. limitata, which suggests that these species offer greater protection against physical stresses as they exist at higher tidal elevations and lower latitudes where desiccation stress may be stronger. As restoration efforts continue to aid declining Californian rockweed populations, these findings can inform conservation management to target sites and species to have the largest benefits to ecosystems and coastal resilience.",

            "abstractNote": "Gelatinous zooplankton are often represented as a single functional group in ecosystem-wide frameworks and biogeochemical models, despite growing evidence that species-specific feeding traits and seasonal dynamics may lead to contrasting planktonic responses. Here, we compared plankton community structure and biomass flow across three different years, including one year characterized by a bloom of Obelia sp., a microphagous, filter-feeding hydromedusa, and two non-bloom years. During the bloom year, patterns in plankton biomass were consistent with an enhanced role of microbial pathways, with bacterial abundance positively associated with Obelia sp., potentially reflecting increased availability of jellyfish-derived dissolved organic matter. This was accompanied by transient increases in nanoflagellates and ciliates, compatible with a short-lived microbial cascade in which these groups may have contributed to prey availability for Obelia sp. At the same time, weak coupling between bacteria and their grazers during the bloom suggests that a substantial fraction of jelly-derived organic matter may have been processed through bacterial respiration rather than transferred efficiently to higher trophic levels. Following the bloom, the community exhibited fewer interactions among the groups assessed in this study, along with a poor recovery of mesozooplankton biomass in the subsequent year. Although the Obelia sp. bloom declined rapidly, lasting less than a month, its effects on microbial community structure through its selective feeding on motile protists were more persistent. Taken together, these observations are consistent with the hypothesis that intense Obelia sp. blooms can coincide with transient reorganization of planktonic trophic pathways, although broader inference is limited by the observational nature of the study and the occurrence of a single bloom event.",
