However, our knowledge of the characteristics, maltreatment patterns, and risk factors associated with maltreatment among immigrant and U.S. born Latino children and their families has been incomplete. The goals of this study are to establish the national prevalence of immigrant and U.S. born Latino children who come to the attention of child welfare systems in the United States; to expand our knowledge regarding the role of nativity in child maltreatment patterns among Latinos; and to determine if disparities in child maltreatment patterns and risks exist among Latino families using data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being. Despite considerable risks, data indicate that immigrant Latino children are slightly underrepresented among children who present to child welfare systems when compared to the general population. Moreover, no significant differences were observed between immigrant children and U.S. born children with regard to substantiation patterns. The biobehavioral\nmechanisms through which these adverse outcomes emerge, however, are not clear. To better\nunderstand the ways in which early life adversity affects subsequent social behavior, changes in the neuropeptide\noxytocin (OT) in children (n = 73) aged 8.1–11.5 years following a laboratory stressor were examined.\nGirls with histories of physical abuse have higher levels of urinary OT and lower levels of salivary cortisol following\nthe stressor when compared to controls. Methods: The current study examined the association between three types of\nchildhood adversity abuse, neglect, and a chaotic home environment and inflammatory markers (interleukin [IL]-6 and C-reactive\nprotein), in breast cancer survivors who had completed primary cancer treatment 1 year earlier (n = 152). Results: The combined\nmeasure of childhood adversity was associated with elevations in plasma levels of IL-6 (B = 0.009, p = .027, G2 = 0.027, after\ncontrolling for age, body mass index, ethnicity, alcohol use, and cancer treatment (surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy). Examination\nof individual types of adversity demonstrated a positive association between abuse and IL-6 (B = 0.043, p = .030, G2 = 0.026),\nchaotic home environment and IL-6 (B = 0.031, p = .005, G2 = 0.043), and chaotic home environment and soluble tumor necrosis factor\nreceptor type II (B = 0.012, p = .009, G2 = 0.037), after controlling for relevant confounds. Because\nmost readily available forms of treatment are ineffective in the long term, it is essential to advance knowledge of obesity prevention\nby identifying potentially modifiable risk factors. Findings from experimental studies in non-human primates suggest that adverse\nchildhood experiences may influence obesity risk. However, observations from human studies showed heterogeneous results. To\naddress these inconsistencies, we performed Medline, PsycInfo and Embase searches till 1 August 2012 for articles examining the\nassociation between childhood maltreatment and obesity. We then conducted a meta-analysis of the identified studies and\nexplored the effects of various possible sources of bias. A meta-analysis of 41 studies (190 285 participants) revealed that childhood\nmaltreatment was associated with elevated risk of developing obesity over the life-course (odds ratio¼1.36; 95% confidence\ninterval¼1.26–1.47). Results were not explained by publication bias or undue influence of individual studies. Overall, results were\nnot significantly affected by the measures or definitions used for maltreatment or obesity, nor by confounding by childhood or\nadult socioeconomic status, current smoking, alcohol intake or physical activity. However, the association was not statistically\nsignificant in studies of children and adolescents, focusing on emotional neglect, or adjusting for current depression. Furthermore,\nthe association was stronger in samples including more women and whites, but was not influenced by study quality. Child\nmaltreatment is a potentially modifiable risk factor for obesity. Emergency departments (EDs) are often the first point of contact for many young children affected by emotionally or psychologically traumatic events (e.g., neglect, separation from primary caregiver, maltreatment, witness to domestic violence within the family, natural disasters). Study Objectives: Describe the prevalence of physical health symptoms, ED use, and health-related problems in young children (birth through 5 years) affected by trauma, and to predict whether or not children experiencing trauma are more likely to be affected by health-related problems. Methods: Community-based, cross-sectional survey of 208 young children. Traumatic events were assessed by the Traumatic Events Screening Inventory – Parent Report Revised. Child health symptoms and health-related problems were measured using the Caregiver Information Questionnaire, developed by ORC Macro (Atlanta, GA). Results: Seventy-two percent of children had experienced at least one type of traumatic event. Children exposed to trauma were also experiencing recent health-related events, including visits to the ED (32.2%) and the doctor (76.9%) for physical health symptoms, and recurring physical health problems (40.4%). Children previously exposed to high levels of trauma (four or more types of events) were 2.9 times more likely to report having had recently visited the ED for health purposes. Conclusions: Preventing recurrent trauma or recognizing early trauma exposure is difficult, but essential if long-term negative consequences are to be mitigated or prevented. However, some authors have\nquestioned the reliability of self-reports of maltreatment, suggesting\nthat psychopathology at the time of evaluation affects\nself-reports.
