Our study examines everyday situations of Covid-19 testing by analyzing a large corpus of Twitter data collected during the first 2 months of the pandemic. Adopting a sociological definition of testing situations, as moments in which it is no longer possible to go on in the usual way, we show how social media analysis can be used to surface a range of such situations across scales, from the individual to the societal. Practicing a form of large-scale data exploration we call “interpretative querying” within the framework of situational analysis, we delineated two types of coronavirus testing situations: those involving locations of testing and those involving relations. Using lexicon analysis and composite image analysis, we then determined what composes the two types of testing situations on Twitter during the relevant period. Our analysis shows that contrary to the focus on individual responsibility in UK government discourse on Covid-19 testing, English-language Twitter reporting on coronavirus testing at the time thematized collective relations. The analysis is based on over 825 URLs extracted from Google Search Engine results pages (SERP) using 50 thematic keywords derived from fact-checked content. It reports findings on both the rankings as well as the levels of SEO optimisation of problematic content and the fact-checks. Our investigation found that fact-checks enjoy greater visibility in Google Web Search compared to the articles they seek to correct, both in terms of frequency of appearance and their placement within the SERP rankings. Specifically, our study shows fact-checks rank higher than problematic content across five topical keywords groups, Covid-19, climate change, the war in Ukraine, U.S. liberals and U.S. elections, except in contested stories related to the war in Ukraine, where articles about U.S. bio-labs share equal prominence with their corresponding fact-checks. The findings imply Google moderation effects, as fact-checking content is more prominent given (nearly) equal levels of optimisation. It also implies that fact-checks are generally more prominent for audiences searching for problematic content, though both often appear in the same SERP. It suggests that real-time cannot be accounted for as a universal temporal frame in which events happen, but explores the making of real-time from a device perspective focusing on the temporalities of platforms. Based on an empirical study exploring the pace at which various online media produce new content, we trace the different rhythms, patterns or tempos created by the interplay of devices, users’ web activities and issues. What emerges are distinct forms of ‘realtimeness’ which are not external from but specific to devices, organized through socio-technical arrangements and practices of use. To understand the company’s evolution in the age of mobile media, we critically engage with the political economy of platformization. This article puts forward a conceptual framework and methodological apparatus to study Facebook’s economic growth and expanding platform boundaries in the mobile ecosystem through an analysis of the Facebook Messenger app. Through financial and institutional analysis, we examine Messenger’s business dimension and draw on platform studies and information systems research to survey its technical dimension. By retracing how Facebook, through Messenger, operationalizes platform power, this article attempts to bridge the gap between these various disciplines by demonstrating how platforms emerge and how their apps may evolve into platforms of their own, thereby gaining infrastructural properties. They allow the instant transformation of user engagement into numbers on button counters, which can be traded and multiplied but also function as tracking devices.
