"abstractNote": "The history of ideas guiding the development of an attribution-based theory of motivation is presented. These influences include the search for a “grand” theory of motivation (from drive and expectancy/value theory), an attempt to represent how the past may influence the present and the future (as Thorndike accomplished), and the incorporation of causes and their properties (from Heider and Rotter). The goal of this approach is the formulation of a conception in which causes influence action via the mediating mechanisms of specific affects (as first suggested by Atkinson) and expectancy. The empirical and conceptual contributions of the theory are summarized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]",

"abstractNote": "This study examined the impact of the actual environment on changes in psychological adjustment over time. According to Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci and Ryan, Intrinsic motivation and self-determination in human behavior, 1985a, Plenum, New York; J Res Pers 19: 109-134, 1985b; Psychol Inq 11:227-268, 2000), environments that are objectively supportive of autonomy should facilitate psychological adjustment through their impact on people's subjective perceptions of autonomy and self-determined motivation. The present study tested this hypothesis using a prospective design with nursing homes residents. Results from structural equation modeling showed that actual autonomy-supportive nursing home environments were positively associated with residents' perceptions of autonomy that in turn predicted self-determined motivation in major life domains. Self-determined motivation, in turn, predicted increases in psychological adjustment over a one-year period. Theoretical implications of the present findings are discussed in line with SDT. The present collection of articles in this special issue attests to that. In this last article, we present a short overview of issues that cut across these papers as well as make recommendations for future research. We believe that the future is quite bright for SDT. In this way, behavioral regulation by motivation may be part of a multilevel architecture of the mammal and the human mind. A number of basic motivational modules that might be involved in processes of goal engagement and disengagement in humans are proposed, which together may favor an overall preference for controlling the environment and maximizing one's resources and capacities for control. "abstractNote": "<p><br/>The role of gender in shaping achievement motivation has a long history in psychological and educational research. In this review, gender differences in motivation are examined using four contemporary theories of achievement motivation, including attribution, expectancy-value, self-efficacy, and achievement goal perspectives. Across all theories, findings indicate girls' and boys' motivation-related beliefs and behaviors continue to follow gender role stereotypes. Boys report stronger ability and interest beliefs in mathematics and science, whereas girls have more confidence and interest in language arts and writing. Gender effects are moderated by ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and classroom context. Additionally, developmental research indicates that gender differences in motivation are evident early in school, and increase for reading and language arts over the course of school. The role of the home and school environment in the development of these gender patterns is examined. Important implications for school professionals are highlighted.</p>",

"abstractNote": "The role of gender in shaping achievement motivation has a long history in psychological and educational research. Important implications for school professionals are highlighted. "abstractNote": "Reviews the book Work motivation: History, theory, research, and practice by Gary P. Latham (see record 2006-11764-000). This book is organized as four parts. Part I comprises four chapters chronologically spanning developments of the 20th century plus a fifth chapter focusing on four major controversies. Part II describes five contemporary clusters of theories. Part III is a single chapter on future directions and potential misdirections in the study of work motivation. Part IV, previously mentioned, is a delightful chapter on \"The Art of Practice\", both autobiographical and prescriptive, which provides a fitting conclusion to the story. Throughout the book, Latham takes a mentoring approach, frequently offering advice to young scientist-practitioners. The intended audience for this text is clearly graduate students in HRM, I-O, and OB, but as it is an enjoyable and instructive read for even more experienced scholars and practitioners, I recommend it to one and all.
