"abstractNote": "In the spring of 1939, as the world seemed to dissolve into two theaters of war, with the U.S. still suffering from a decade-long depression, for the first and only time, two simultaneous worlds fairs were hosted by one nation. New York's World of Tomorrow promoted modernism and technology; it was larger, more formal, oriented to Europe, and has accrued its historians. San Francisco's Golden Gate International Exhibition seemed less ambitious and declamatory; it was smaller, eclectic, fragmented, oriented to the Pacific Rim, and until now has attracted no serious history. While the United States stretched from sea to shining sea, this bi-coastal production, and the distinct differences in character and purpose of each, gives new evidence that the nation embraced competing visions about its history, the wellsprings of its culture, the source and potential of its people, and its destiny.\nWhile San Francisco's reigning theme, Pageant of the Pacific, and the Hollywoodian character of the official exhibition halls paid homage to a pastoral ideal, and an invented tradition derived from stereotypic images of nations and cultures surrounding the Pacific Ocean, this dissertation demonstrates that in its execution and ethos, the fair reflects and was a part of the process which figuratively created new ground in American culture and identity. Of particular importance was that it was constructed and demonstrated the modern condition.\nThe 1939 San Francisco Fair took place on the nation's newest piece of territory--a mile square island, called Treasure Island, created from soil dredged off the bottom of the San Francisco Bay by the Army Corps of Engineers. There in the middle of the bay, framed by the two great bridges recently completed, would be the region's metropolitan airport when the fair closed. In four chapters, keyed to the most popular and profitable exhibits at the fair, the dissertation maps the maze of themes, institutional interests, images and technologies which animated and constituted the Golden Gate International Exhibition. From an eighty foot concrete statue of a woman, symbolizing the amalgamation of Pacific cultures, to the Nobel Prize-winning cyclotron, creating force heretofore beyond imagination; from fanfare arrivals of Pam American Airlines' Chinese Clipper in the harbor of Trade Winds, to the Soule \"All-Steel, All Electric House\" (including Franciscan Ware place settings on a California Moderne table); from the Temple of Religion and daily ecumenical services to Sally Rand's Nude Ranch, the studied eclecticism, the fragmented and random ordering of exhibition space, ultimately showcased the modern scientific, industrial, commercial and cultural capital that was propelling the U.S. into world dominance.",

Looking back over the past one hundred years, the contributors to this in-depth survey consider the diverse range of artists who have been influenced by the region's compelling union of water and land, peaks and valleys, and fog and sunlight.Paintings, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, landscape architecture, earthworks, conceptual art, and designs in city planning and architecture are all represented. The diversity reflects not just the glories of nature but also an exploration of what constitutes \"landscape\" in its broadest, most complete sense.Among the more than two hundred works of art are those by well-known artists and designers such as Bernard Maybeck, Diego Rivera, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown, Lawrence Halprin, and Christo. Lesser-known artists are here as well, resulting in an exceptional array of approaches to the natural environment. The essays also explore key themes in the Bay Area's landscape art tradition, including the ethnic perspectives that have played an essential role in the region's art.The inexhaustible ability of the land to stimulate different personal meanings is made clear in this volume, and the effect yields a deeper understanding of how art can shape our lives in ways both spiritual and practical, how the landscape without constantly merges with the landscape within.Published in association with The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The San Francisco Bay Area boasts one of the richest and most continuous traditions of landscape art in the entire country. The essays also explore key themes in the Bay Area's landscape art tradition, including the ethnic perspectives that have played an essential role in the region's art.The inexhaustible ability of the land to stimulate different personal meanings is made clear in this volume, and the effect yields a deeper understanding of how art can shape our lives in ways both spiritual and practical, how the landscape without constantly merges with the landscape within.Published in association with The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.",
