"abstractNote": "An account of the various types of antique clocks which were in vogue in America during the 18th and 19th centuries. Since 1875, when Henry Clay Work wrote a song called \"Grandfather's Clock,\" most of these clocks (from five to nine feet tall) have become known as grandfather clocks. Among the antique clocks pictured and described in this article is one introduced by Eli Terry of Connecticut, to whom credit is given \"for converting clockmaking from a craft to an industry, since he worked out assembly-line methods of factory production and proved that mass-produced clocks could be sold.\" 4 photos.",

"abstractNote": "However, in 1698 the English East India Company declared a monopoly on Eastern trade goods, and the American fascination with the Far East had to be satisfied by published accounts, such as Jean Baptiste Du Halde's General History of China (London, 1736), which were found in a surprising number of colonial libraries.1 If travel accounts such as Johannes Nieuhof's lavishly illustrated An Embassy from the East-India Company.. .to the...Emperror of China (London, 1669) did not make it across the Atlantic, their individual engravings did and were mounted, framed and unframed, on colonial walls.2 In the early eighteenth century Boston japanners excelled at imitating Chinese lacquer furniture (see Fig. 8), and shards of Chinese porcelain tea sets and punch bowls are regularly recovered from colonial sites.4 And m one house in Newport, Rhode Island, scenes of China were painted in oils on the parlor walls.",
