There is a growing recognition that the diversity of life comprises both biological and cultural diversity. But this division is not universal and, in many cases, has been deepened by the common disciplinary divide between the natural and social sciences and our apparent need to manage and control nature. This book goes beyond divisive definitions and investigates the bridges linking biological and cultural diversity. The authors explore the common drivers of loss, and argue that policy responses should target both forms of diversity in a novel integrative approach to conservation, thus reducing the gap between science, policy and practice. While conserving nature alongside human cultures presents unique challenges, this book forcefully shows that any hope for saving biological diversity is predicated on a concomitant effort to appreciate and protect cultural diversity

We first\nestablish a framework for our analysis by identifying a set of criteria for evaluating each tool. Next we\nprovide a brief description of each tool, followed by an evaluation and comparison of the strengths and\nweaknesses of all the tools examined and how well they can be adapted to diverse contexts. We also provide\nsuggestions for avoiding common pitfalls. Our findings suggest that most tools are flexible enough to be\nadapted to a range of applications, and that results are more robust when tools are used in concert.\nPractitioners should not be disturbed when results are contradictory or unexpected; initial surprises can\nlead to unexpected discoveries. Given the complexity of natural resources and their management, picking\nthe right tool does not guarantee that the data desired will be produced, but selecting the wrong tool does\nmake success less likely. Polycentric global epistemology represents one possible future of indigenous knowledges. It consists of a variety of dialogues between mutual epistemological “others”. To obtain data, planning officials, biologists, and representatives of resident and\nnature associations were interviewed in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The results indicate that LEK\nexists among nature enthusiast, as well as local residents, and planners can obtain the knowledge in\nseveral ways, most notably through networks of knowledgeable key informants and local nature\nassociations. Considering LEK in urban planning is important because it complements scientific ecological\ndata and indicates places important to locals. Some of the challenges of using LEK include collecting it\nthrough participatory planning processes, distinguishing it from other information, valuing subjective\nknowledge, and empowering planning officials to use LEK. To enhance communication between\nstakeholders, social scientists should be integrated in the planning process. The equitable placing of community values side by side with scientific values show that community concepts can parallel and extend CBPR premises and are more than a variable to be added in the analysis. The community partners, whose voices guide this paper, introduced the values associated with the concepts of “aloha,” “mālama,” “maihilahila,” “na„auao,” and “ano ano hua.” These concepts were employed and maintained throughout the study that assessed diet, obesity, and psychosocial factors related to food and nutrition as a cancer prevention method. We describe and examine these values in light of persistent challenges in CBPR; ensuring that the topic is a community driven issue, fair representation and data dissemination.
