"abstractNote": "Resumen La percepción sobre la posición que ocupan los individuos en la estratificación social ha sido uno de los interrogantes clásicos de la sociología. Diversos análisis concuerdan que esta percepción se ve condicionada tanto por la posición social objetiva, así como por características contextuales de las sociedades en las que viven las personas (riqueza, desigualdad, pobreza, etc.). En el presente artículo analizamos el fenómeno en 17 países latinoamericanos a lo largo de los años 2006-2020, empleando un análisis multinivel que nos permite conocer la relación entre factores individuales y agregados. Los resultados señalan que, por un lado, como en otras sociedades, existe una propensión hacia posiciones intermedias de la escala social, manteniéndose una considerable importancia del efecto del estatus social objetivo sobre el estatus subjetivo a nivel individual. Asimismo, a nivel agregado, se aprecia que el grado de bienestar económico y de riqueza que presentan los distintos países actúan como condicionantes contextuales sobre el modo en que las personas se posicionan en la escala social.\n , \n Résumé La perception de la position qu’occupent les individus dans la stratification sociale a été l’une des questions classiques de la sociologie. Diverses analyses s’accordent à dire que cette perception est conditionnée à la fois par la position sociale objective et par les caractéristiques contextuelles des sociétés dans lesquelles vivent les individus (richesse, inégalité, pauvreté, etc.). Dans cet article, nous analysons ce phénomène dans 17 pays d’Amérique Latine au cours des années 2006-2020, en utilisant une analyse multiniveau qui nous permet de comprendre la relation entre les facteurs individuels et agrégés. Les résultats indiquent que, d’une part, comme dans d’autres sociétés, il existe une propension à occuper des positions intermédiaires dans l’échelle sociale, et qu’il y a une importance considérable de l’effet du statut social objectif sur le statut subjectif au niveau individuel. De plus, au niveau agrégé, nous constatons que le degré de bien-être économique et de richesse des différents pays agit comme un contexte conditionnant la manière dont les individus se positionnent dans l’échelle sociale.\n , \n Resumo A percepção da posição ocupada pelos indivíduos na estratificação social tem sido um dos questionamentos clássicos da Sociologia. Vários estudos concordam que essa percepção é condicionada tanto pela posição social objetiva quanto pelas características contextuais das sociedades em que as pessoas vivem (riqueza, desigualdade, pobreza, etc.). Neste artigo, analisamos o fenômeno em 17 países latino-americanos ao longo dos anos de 2006 a 2020, utilizando uma análise multinível que nos permite conhecer a relação entre fatores individuais e agregados. Os resultados mostram que, por um lado, como em outras sociedades, existe uma tendência em direção a posições intermediárias na escala social, mantendo-se uma considerável importância do efeito do status social objetivo sobre o status subjetivo a nível individual. Além disso, a nível agregado, observa-se que o grau de bem-estar econômico e de riqueza dos diferentes países atuam como condicionantes contextuais sobre o modo como as pessoas se posicionam na escala social.\n , \n Abstract Sociology has classically addressed the perception of individuals’ position in social stratification. Several studies agree that this perception is conditioned by both objective social positions and contextual characteristics of their societies (wealth, inequality, poverty). In this article, we use multilevel analysis to explore the relationship between individual and aggregate drivers of this phenomenon in 17 Latin American countries from 2006 to 2020. The results indicate that, on the one hand, as in other societies, there is a propensity towards intermediate positions on the social scale, maintaining a considerable importance of the effect of objective social status on subjective status at the individual level. Likewise, at an aggregate, the levels of economic well-being and wealth presented by different countries act as contextual conditioning factors of the way people position themselves on the social scale.",

"abstractNote": "Social class reflects more than the material conditions of people’s lives. Objective resources (e.g., income) shape cultural practices and behaviors that signal social class. These signals create cultural identities among upper- and lower-class individuals—identities that are rooted in subjective perceptions of social-class rank vis-à-vis others. Empirical studies find that perceptions of social-class rank influence patterns of contextual versus dispositional cognition and other- versus self-oriented affect and behavior that are consistent with objective resource-based measures of social class. Our theoretical conceptualization emphasizes the utility of measuring and manipulating perceptions of social-class rank to better understand how social class influences thought and action across diverse social domains.",

"abstractNote": "Based on reference group and cognitive bias considerations, we advance a theory, explicated via a computer simulation, to explain (1) people's perceptions of how equalitarian the class system is, (2) where people place themselves in the class system, (3) where people place others' occupations, and (4) people's estimates of the pay of different occupations. Using a new set of diagrammatic and verbal questions on class, we test our hypotheses on large, representative national samples in Australia (N = 6,177) and Hungary (N = 2,606). A full-information maximum-likelihood analysis strongly supports the hypotheses.",

"abstractNote": "This paper investigates subjective social status using data from surveys collected from representative nationwide samples in 21 countries (N = 50,955). We nd that in all societies there is a pronounced tendency to see oneself as being in the middle of the social hierarchy; that this tendency holds among those at the top and at the bottom of the educational distribution, as well as among those actually in the middle; and that this tendency holds in rich nations as well as poor ones. The objective position of individuals, the wealth of nations, and the national level of unemployment all have substantial effects on subjective status. But their effects are muted by the tendency to see oneself as being in the middle of the hierarchy. This has important implications for class identity and democracy.",
