I wanted to specifically comment on Chapter 4 of this piece because it specifically looked at different methodologies used to collect data that directed their renovation project.

Three things that caught my attention..

  1. This student-centered appraoch to designing spaces occured fairly early (2004).
    2. \n
  2. The data collection process was relatively quick and cheap.
    3. \n
  3. Although faculty input was stressed in earlier chapters, the design process did not seem to consult any faculty members in the design process.

Two connections at UCLA..

  1. The student emphasis on \"comfort\" space is clearly driving many of the design and furniture purchases in the newly rennovated spaces in both Powell and YRL.
    2. \n
  2. The InqSpaces at Powell subscribe to the \"open\" and flexible design elements, although I am unsure as to how powell design teams made these decisions.

One driving question (I have two)..

  1. Student suggestions clearly demonstrate a flexible library, but are some of their suggestions based on the desire for \"new\" spaces rather than the NEED for better study spaces. They designed quiet study spaces into the new floor of the library, when hundreds of quiet study spaces already existed on different floors. It seems obvious that students would prefer newly rennovated spaces and so they will try and cram as many ammenities into the new space and leave the older spaces.

  2.  Should faculty have been consulted as to what kind of space features would benefit student curriculm and learning?
