A focus on religious authority (1) is more consistent with recent developments in social theory than is a preoccupation with religion; (2) draws on and develops what is best in the secularization literature; and (3) reclaims a neglected Weberian insight concerning the sociological analysis of religion. Several descriptive and theoretical \"pay-offs\" of this conceptual innovation are discussed: new hypotheses concerning the relationship between religion and social movements; the enhanced capacity to conceptually apprehend and empirically investigate secularization among societies, organizations, and individuals; and clearer theoretical connections between secularization and other sociological literatures. It is based on\nECosociAl, a new national survey of large urban areas. The topics covered in the paper\ninclude the extent to which these religious variables affect levels of civic participation,\nthe propensity to vote in elections, self-placement on the left-to-right ideological scale,\nlevels of happiness, confidence in institutions and in other people, and the degrees of\ntolerance or acceptance of people of different beliefs, personal attributes, or social\ncondition.\nThe main finding here is that the effects of Latin American religiosity on individual\nattitudes and reported practices are much the same as they are in the United States, even\nthough such religiosity is attached predominantly to a Catholic religious tradition.\nAmerican “exceptionality,” linked as it is to its unique Protestant founding moments,\nturns out to be, therefore, much less exceptional than what is usually thought. Similarly,\nthe findings here contradict the often repeated claim that the advance of Protestantism in\nLatin America should contribute to foster democratic consolidation in the region by\ninfusing it with the cultural and civic virtues long associated in the literature with this\nreligious tradition. Our empirical results fail to detect any substantial differences in the\nattitudes of Latin Americans of different religious identities. More than 150 years ago Tocqueville pointed out that “the facts by no means accord with [the secularization] theory,” and this lack of accord has grown far worse since then. Indeed, the only shred of credibility for the notion that secularization has been taking place has depended on contrasts between now and a bygone Age of Faith. In this essay I assemble the work of many recent historians who are unanimous that the Age of Faith is pure nostalgia — that lack of religious participation was, if anything, even more widespread in medieval times than now. Next, I demonstrate that there have been no recent religious changes in Christendom that are consistent with the secularization thesis — not even among scientists. I also expand assessment of the secularization doctrine to non-Christian societies showing that not even the highly magical “folk religions” in Asia have shown the slightest declines in response to quite rapid modernization. Aplicando el Análisis de Correspondencias Múltiples y el Análisis de Cluster K-medias a los datos de la encuesta europea «Religión- II», del ISSP, se ha elaborado una tipología compuesta por cinco posiciones culturales básicas: religiosos, creyentes, escépticos, agnósticos y ateos. Estos resultados han puesto de manifiesto tanto la extensión cuantitativa como la importancia cualitativa del escepticismo. Mediante la interpretación del contenido de cada uno de los tipos, se muestra que el escepticismo frente a las opciones religiosa o secular constituye en este momento una clave esencial de la cultura europea. No puede hablarse de un claro retorno de lo religioso, pero es evidente que el proceso de secularización ha perdido parte de su fuerza original. La Europa posmoderna se encuentra inmersa en una encrucijada cultural, y tendrá que decidir sobre su futuro. El artículo termina exponiendo las tres posibles estrategias de salida de la duda: la resolución kierkegaardiana, mediante la que los europeos afirmarán posiciones religiosas o seculares excluyentes; la solución borgiana, mediante la que se hibridarán las formas y contenidos religiosos y seculares; y la disolución hegeliana, mediante la que quizás Europa despliegue en el futuro una síntesis cultural nueva construida con los restos de las viejas cosmovisiones religiosa y secular. Applying multiple correspondence and cluster K-means analysis to the data gathered from the ISSP European survey «Religion-II», a new typology based on five basic cultural positions has been developed: religious; believers; skeptics; agnostics and atheists. These results show the quantitative extent and the qualitative importance of skepticism. Through an interpretation of the contents of each type, it shows that the skepticism regarding both religious and secular world views represents, at this particular moment in time, an essential key to European culture. We cannot affirm that there is a return to religious matters, but it is clear that the secularisation process has lost some of its original strength. Post-modern Europe is immersed in a cultural crossroads, and will have to decide about its future. The article ends by showing the three possible strategies for settling the doubt: the Kierkegaardian resolution, whereby Europeans will take up either exclusive religious or secular positions; the Borgian solution, whereby religious and secular content and forms will be hybridized; and the Hegelian dissolution, through which Europe may possibly develop a new cultural synthesis built from the remains of the old secular and religious world views. That is to say, whereas Apostates are significantly less opposed to abortion or working women than either their Catholic or Protestant religious affiliates, they are also more likely to express less confidence in institutions and oppose the role of religion in politics. In contrast, no significant differences emerged between Apostates and Stable Independents, or the non-affiliated religious groups, in relation to these issues. However, religious and class differences have not lost their salience in determining political attitudes in Chile. An original survey focusing primarily on religion shows that religion continues to mold political views along three polarities: irreligion versus religiosity, Catholicism versus Protestantism, and progressive versus traditional forms of religiosity. The irreligious, Protestants, and religiously progressive Catholics place themselves more to the left and are more supportive of the Concertation coalition.
