Les relations entre l’enseignement scolaire et l’Etat sont en France, plus manifestement qu’ailleurs, évidentes. Les contenus et les objets des programmes scolaires, unifiés dans l’ensemble du territoire français, se décident au niveau du Ministère de l’Education nationale et les enseignements ainsi promulgués sont dispensés à tous les élèves d’une même classe d’âge. A l’école, l’Histoire joue un rôle particulier : destinée à faire comprendre l’organisation de la société, elle sélectionne les faits qu’elle présente, elle véhicule des valeurs et porte des jugements sur certains évènements, certaines figures historiques, certaines traditions.... La Géographie, elle, territorialise et donne à comprendre une vision compartimentée de la société. Ici, c’est la vision de l’Autre qui nous intéresse. Quelle image de l’Autre propose l’enseignement scolaire français à ses élèves ? De quel Autre s’agit-il ? Quelle interprétation de l’altérité les élèves auront-ils à l’issue de leur parcours scolaire ? Comprendre l’image qui est accordée à l’Autre, c’est aussi saisir les représentations de soi même.
