            "abstractNote": "A survey of the modern physical setting of Lake El’gygytgyn, northeastern Siberia, is presented here to facilitate interpretation of a 250,000-year climate record derived from sediment cores from the lake bottom. The lake lies inside a meteorite impact crater that is approximately 18 km in diameter, with a total watershed area of 293 km2, 110 km2 of which is lake surface. The only surface water entering the lake comes from the approximately 50 streams draining from within the crater rim; a numbering system for these inlet streams is adopted to facilitate scientific discussion. We created a digital elevation model for the watershed and used it to create hypsometries, channel networks, and drainage area statistics for each of the inlet streams. Many of the streams enter shallow lagoons dammed by gravel berms at the lakeshore; these lagoons may play a significant role in the thermal and biological dynamics of the lake due to their higher water temperatures (>6°C). The lake itself is approximately 12 km wide and 175 m deep, with a volume of 14.1 km3. Water temperature within a column of water near the center of this oligotrophic, monomictic lake never exceeded 4°C over a 2.5 year record, though the shallow shelves (<10 m) surrounding the lake can reach 5°C in summer. Though thermally stratified in winter, the water appears completely mixed shortly after lake ice breakup in July. Mean annual air temperature measured about 200 m from the lake was −10.3°C in 2002, and an unshielded rain gage there recorded 70 mm of rain in summer of 2002. End of winter snow water equivalent on the lake was approximately 110 mm in May 2002. Analysis of NCEP reanalysis air temperatures (1948–2002) reveals that the 8 warmest years and 10 warmest winters have occurred since 1989, with the number of days below −30°C dropping from a pre-1989 mean of 35 to near 0 in recent years. The crater region is windy as well as cold, with hourly wind speeds exceeding 13.4 m s−1 (30 mph) typically at least once each month and 17.8 m s−1 (40 mph) in winter months, with only a few calm days per month; wind may also play an important role in controlling the modern shape of the lake. Numerous lines of evidence suggest that the physical hydrology and limnology of the lake has changed substantially over the past 3.6 million years, and some of the implications of these changes on paleoclimate reconstructions are discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "Accurate and continuous monitoring of lakes and inland seas is possible since 1991 thanks to the recent missions of satellite altimetry (Topex-Poseidon, ERS-1, ERS-2, Jason-1 and Envisat). Global processing of the data of these satellites could provide temporal and spatial times series of lakes water level from 1991 to 2003 on the whole Earth with a decimeter precision. The response of water level to regional hydrology is particularly marked for lakes and inland seas of semi-arid regions. Altimetry data can provide an invaluable source of information in hydrology sciences, but in-situ data (rivers runoff, temperature, precipitation etc.) are still strongly needed to study the evolution of water mass balance of each lake. Moreover, sea level variations that result from variation of hydrological parameters such as river discharge, precipitation and evaporation, are very sensitive indicators of regional climate variations. Recent results obtained on Aral Sea and Issykkul Lake are presented here. Inter - annual changes of water level have been obtained over these lakes that must be interpreted in term of hydrological water balance. Since 1960 the Aral sea has been drying and since 1989 it is divided into two lakes that follow different evolution, the Big Aral in the south which continuously dried up the last 10 years, while the so-called Small Aral in the north presented large inter-annual fluctuations related to constructions and destructions of a dam in the Berg's strait retaining the water from the Syr Darya. For Issykkul, a slow decrease of the level has been observed over the last hundreds years (4 cm/year), followed by an abrupt and bigger increase of the level of around 10 cm/yr since 1998. The impact on local populations and infra-structures of these fluctuations are dramatic in the case of Aral, much less in the case of Issykkul, but comparative study of both water bodies may help in the future to understand the respective consequences of human-induced activities from the natural changes. It is also the task of a new project recently submitted and accepted by the NATO with scientists from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyz Republic.",

            "abstractNote": "The Aral Sea has been shrinking since the former Soviet Union constructed irrigation projects to divert water from its main rivers in the 1960s. The diminishing of the Aral Sea is \"one of the worst environmental disasters in the world\" (from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon). In this study, 33 years of satellite observations from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and 21 years of satellite altimetry sea level data from TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, and Jason-2 are used to quantify the long-term hydrological changes in the Aral Sea. A simple algorithm with AVHRR channels 1 and 2 albedo is developed to identify and discriminate the water pixels from land and cloud. Thus, monthly water coverage in the region can be reliably generated. The water coverage maps since 1981 show constant decline of the Aral Sea. The coverage dropped from similar to 4.7-4.8 x 104 km(2) in 1981 to about 1/4 of this value in the recent years. In fact, drastic hydrological change was observed in the main Aral Sea during the 2000s. In the South Aral Sea, sea level shows a steady decrease from 35 m above sea level to <26 m since 1993. Total loss of water storage since 1993 is estimated to be similar to 2.0 x 10(2) km(3) for the South Aral Sea with a rate of similar to 16-20 km(3)/yr before 2002, and a smaller value after 2002. In 1990, the North Aral Sea was observed to separate from the main Aral Sea. Water coverage, sea level, and total water storage were kept relatively stable for the period between 1993 and 2013 in the North Aral Sea. A water level increase and coverage expansion occurred during the 2005-2006 period when a dam was built in 2005 between the North Aral Sea and the South-East Aral Sea.",

            "abstractNote": "1. Limnological changes to the Aral Sea, a large saline lake in central Asia, are considered. Important changes include the decreased water-level (c. 15 m), the recession of the shoreline (up to 120 km in places), the exposure of large areas of lake bed, the increased salinity (from c. 10 to 30 g l(-1)), and the marked alteration in the nature of the lacustrine biota involving decreases in diversity and biomass and the introduction of species. 2. Fish have virtually disappeared from the lake and the diversity of associated bird and wildlife communities has decreased. 3. The major cause of the limnological changes is the diversion of water, mainly for agricultural purposes, from inflowing rivers (the Amu- and Syr-Darya), and, to a lesser degree, species introductions. 4. Limnological changes have been accompanied by changes to regional rivers and terrestrial environments, groundwaters, climate, and to agricultural productivity. 5. It is concluded that four major values of the lake (economic, cultural, scientific, and environmental) have been seriously diminished by recent changes to it. The need to continue limnological studies is stressed.",

            "abstractNote": "The interannual and interdecadal variability of the air temperature in the Aral sea region at surface and at different isobaric levels is investigated using NCAR/NCEP reanalysis data, CARDS aerological data, data collected at the former USSR and the present Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan meteorological stations. Five groups of stations are identified in the study region using an objective classification algorithm. The reanalysis data for the Aral sea region are first validated against the observational data. The analysis reveals that during the pre-desiccation period, negative air temperature trends were dominant for all seasons except winter. In contrast, the desiccation period was mainly characterized by trends towards warming. The largest trend values corresponded to related winter, and the second largest with summer. The character of the long-term air temperature variability at different isobaric levels over the Aral sea region was essentially same as that of the larger spatial scale background variability. However, the southwestern part of the Aral sea region up to 700 mb exhibits statistically significant local anomalies possibly associated with the Aral sea desiccation. The wavelet analysis is used to investigate the frequency structure of the air temperature variability in the Aral sea region.",

            "abstractNote": "Anthropogenic desiccation of the Aral Sea between 1960 and the mid-1990s resulted in a substantial modification of the land surface that changed air temperature in the surrounding region. During the desiccation interval, the net annual rate of precipitation minus evaporation (P − E) over the Aral Sea’s surface became more negative by ∼15%, with the greatest changes occurring during the summer months. In addition, Aral Sea surface temperatures (SST) increased by up to 5°C in the spring and summer and decreased by up to 4°C in the fall and winter. A series of coupled regional climate–lake model experiments were completed to evaluate if the observed hydrologic changes are caused by desiccation or instead reflect larger-scale climatic variability or change, or some combination of both. If the P − E changes are the result of desiccation, then a positive feedback exists that has amplified the anthropogenic perturbation to the hydrologic system. The effects of desiccation are examined by varying the simulated area, depth, and salinity of the Aral Sea in different model experiments. The simulated changes in SST resulting from desiccation are similar to the observed changes—both simulated and observed SSTs have increased during the spring and summer and have decreased during the fall and winter. The simulated changes in the annual cycle of P − E resulting from desiccation are also similar to observed changes, but the simulated net annual decrease in P − E is only ∼30% of the observed decrease. Warming has been observed across central Asia during the desiccation interval. The hydrologic response to this large-scale climatic variability or change was assessed by perturbing the meteorological boundary conditions (1.5°C cooling with constant relative humidity) but leaving the Aral Sea characteristics unchanged. The simulated effects of warming do not closely match the observed changes on the monthly timescale—SST changes are positive and the P − E changes are negative in all months. However, the annual change in P − E is similar to the observed value. The simulated hydrologic response to the combined effects of desiccation and warming matches the observed SST and P − E changes more closely than the response to each forcing alone. This result indicates that a combination of both desiccation and climatic change or variability has produced the observed hydrological changes—the primary effect of desiccation is to alter the annual cycle of SST and P − E whereas warming has modified the hydrologic budget on the annual timescale.",

            "abstractNote": "In the last 5 years, Lake Victoria water level has seen a dramatic fall that has caused alarm to water resource managers. Since the lake basin contributes about 20% of the lakes water in form of discharge, with 80% coming from direct rainfall, this study undertook a satellite analysis of the entire lake basin in an attempt to establish the cause of the decline. Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellites were employed in the analysis. Using 45 months of data spanning a period of 4 years (2002–2006), GRACE satellite data are used to analyse the variation of the geoid (equipotential surface approximating the mean sea level) triggered by variation in the stored waters within the lake basin. TRMM Level 3 monthly data for the same period of time are used to compute mean rainfall for a spatial coverage of .25°×.25° (25×25 km) and the rainfall trend over the same period analyzed. To assess the effect of evaporation, 59 CHAMP satellite’s occultation for the period 2001 to 2006 are analyzed for tropopause warming. GRACE results indicate an annual fall in the geoid by 1.574 mm/year during the study period 2002–2006. This fall clearly demonstrates the basin losing water over these period. TRMM results on the other hand indicate the rainfall over the basin (and directly over the lake) to have been stable during this period. The CHAMP satellite results indicate the tropopause temperature to have fallen in 2002 by about 3.9 K and increased by 2.2 K in 2003 and remained above the 189.5 K value of 2002. The tropopause heights have shown a steady increase from a height of 16.72 m in 2001 and has remained above this value reaching a maximum of 17.59 km in 2005, an increase in height by 0.87 m. Though the basin discharge contributes only 20%, its decline has contributed to the fall in the lake waters. Since rainfall over the period remained stable, and temperatures did not increase drastically to cause massive evaporation, the remaining major contributor is the discharge from the expanded Owen Falls dam.",

            "abstractNote": "Closed basins such as the Caspian Sea rapidly respond to variations in atmospheric and geological events. This study has been conducted to deduce the role of natural and anthropogenic influences on the Caspian Sea mean water level fluctuations for the period of 1998–2005. It is recognized that climate is the primary mechanism of the Caspian Sea mean water level variations based on the relatively small differences of the Caspian Sea hydrologic budget residuals and the Caspian Sea mean water level fluctuations. This is further supported by the similarity in water-level variations of the Caspian Sea with those of Lake Van and Lake Urmia. On the other hand, the Caspian Sea needed to lose some of its water to attain water balance equilibrium in 2000 and 2001. The year 2000 showed anomalous seismic activity particularly in the southwestern part of the Caspian Sea. Two significant earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.8 and 6.5 Mw occurred on November 25, 2000. The focal mechanisms of these earthquakes and numerous aftershocks indicated normal faulting and, therefore, caused the Caspian Sea lake level to decline in 2000. The contribution of submarine mud volcano eruptions to the Caspian Sea lake level could be insignificant based on the comparison of water budget residuals and the mean water level variations. Neither crustal deformation (based on the GPS measurements) nor the offshore oil and natural gas production activities in the Caspian Sea are responsible for noticeable changes to the level of the Caspian Sea.",
