            "abstractNote": "This analysis began with inquiries into the substantive area of distance education using the classic grounded theory method. Analysis revealed a pattern of problem-solving behavior, from which the theory \" Keeping Your Distance  \" emerged.\n\nThe theory is an integrated set of concepts referring to the conscious and unconscious strategies that people use to regulate distance , physical and representative, in their everyday lives. Strategies are used to control physical, emotional, and psychological realities and to conserve personal energy in interactions with individuals and/or institutions.\n\nKeeping Your Distance is presented in terms of a conditions/consequences/covariance theoretical model adapted from Glaser's (1978) Theoretical Sensitivity . Conditions evoke a system of strategic response patterns which result in consequences. Responses and their consequences change conditions and result in additional adjustments, made on an ongoing basis. For all social interactions, people use a personalized algorithm of engagement that mitigates conditions and consequences and preserves optimal distance.\n\nKeeping Your Distance provides a theoretical starting point for considerations of the changing notions of distance. In part, these changes have been brought about by developments in the fields of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and online social networking.\n\nThis emerging, multivariate, conceptual theory may be of interest to scholar-practitioners examining distance education, psycho-social processes, and critical pedagogy.             "abstractNote": "Qualitative methodologies are increasingly popular in medical research. Grounded theory is the methodology most-often cited by authors of qualitative studies in medicine, but it has been suggested that many 'grounded theory' studies are not concordant with the methodology. In this paper we provide a worked example of a grounded theory project.             "abstractNote": "Clinical reasoning has traditionally been understood in terms of either hypothetico-deductive or Bayesian methods. However, clinical psychology requires an organizing framework that goes beyond the limits of these methods and characterizes the full range of reasoning processes involved in the description, understanding, and formulation of the difficulties presented by clients. In this article, the authors present a framework for clinical reasoning and case formulation that is largely based on a broad abductive theory of scientific method (Haig, ). The abductive theory articulates and combines the processes of phenomena detection and theory construction.             "abstractNote": "While much is known about the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on women in adulthood, little is currently known about their self-care efforts. Given the paucity of research on self-care for survivors, particularly those who are also mothers, and the potential importance of self-care for both themselves and their children, the main goal of the present study was to explore these women’s perceptions and practices of self-care. A grounded theory approach was chosen for this exploration as it provided a sensitive and open-ended methodology which garnered an in-depth understanding of self-care for survivor mothers. The current study combined classic grounded theory (GT) research methods with photovoice methods to explore self-care from the perspective of CSA survivor mothers. Analyses of interview and photograph data from 14 survivor mothers resulted in an original basic social process for understanding how these women care for themselves, feel better, and engage in healing in the context of past violence and trauma. Complex interactive behavioural patterns were identified that recreated a whole self out of damaged fragments; these were conceptualized as “reconstituting a damaged self”. This basic social process was comprised of three main stages, including: emotional de-paining, safetying, and authenticating and returning to self. Several substages within each of these main stages were also identified. Findings were discussed in relation to four theoretical frameworks. Future research directions and clinical implications for this neglected population were suggested. Reconstituting a damaged self can be a long process for sexual abuse survivor mothers involving taking small safe steps, for the most part, on one’s own.",

            "abstractNote": "Evidence for the superiority of guided instruction is explained in the context of our knowledge of human cognitive architecture, expert–novice differences, and cognitive load. Although unguided or minimally guided instructional approaches are very popular and intuitively appealing, the point is made that these approaches ignore both the structures that constitute human\ncognitive architecture and evidence from empirical studies over the past half-century that consistently\nindicate that minimally guided instruction is less effective and less efficient than instructional\napproaches that place a strong emphasis on guidance of the student learning process.\nThe advantage of guidance begins to recede only when learners have sufficiently high prior knowledge to provide “internal” guidance. Recent developments in instructional research and instructional design models that support guidance during instruction are briefly described.",

            "note": "<p>This study was conducted using classical grounded theory analysis (Glaser, 1978, 1996, 1998, 2001; Glaser &amp; Strauss, 1967), an inductive, systematic method that is empirically grounded in data. Data sources included open-ended interviews with school counselors, who were the starting point for this study, and others working within organizations and systems. Data were also gathered from literature, media and Internet, informal conversations, and direct observation. The purpose of a grounded theory study is to discover a theory that explains the main concern that people in a substantive area are facing, and how they are attempting to resolve it. Through theoretical sampling (Glaser, 1978, 1998) and constant comparative analysis (Glaser, 1965), the core variable, working the system, emerged to describe the participants&apos; main concern. Aligning to advantage was found to be their resolving process. As people work the system, they engage in actions to advantage themselves, others, or the overall system of which they are a part. Working the system is a basic social process (Simmons, Hadden, &amp; Glaser, 1994) that consists of three phases: accessing, engaging, and sustaining. Each of these phases is associated with certain aligning behaviors, categorized by their personal, interpersonal, and structural dimensions. In the accessing phase, one uses entrance strategies such as envisioning and strategic placing to join anew system or to work anew aspect of an ongoing system. In the engaging phase, people employ powerful aligning strategies, including flexing, hooking, and developing, to create optimal advantage. The sustaining phase comprises authenticating, transitioning, and other alignments geared to making the goals of working the system last over the long term. The working the system process is recursive. People continually react to existing conditions by setting goals and pursuing alignments. These alignments evoke consequences that, in turn, create new conditions requiring revised goals. The working the system process continues with new alignments geared to further advantaging. The theory of working the system is applicable and useful to all people who are endeavoring to succeed in the systems of their lives. Keywords: systems, alignments, grounded theory.</p>",

            "abstractNote": "The title of this paper was derived from an incident I observed some years ago while accompanying a highly talented musician- songwriter friend to a performance. During a break, an audience member approached him to compliment the last song he had performed. He had written both the music and the lyrics to the song, one of many he had written. The audience member queried, “Is that a real song, or did you just make it up?” A touch amused, and not knowing whether he should be flattered or insulted, he politely replied, “It is a real song and I made it up.” This episode puts in mind a similar attitude in the social sciences that Glaser and Strauss (1967) noted, in which a small number of ’theoretical capitalists’ originate what are considered to be “real” theories and others are relegated to the role of “proletariat” testers. The means by which these theorists derived their theories remained largely mysterious. Unleashing proletariat testers was one of the chief rationales behind Glaser and Strauss’ development of grounded theory. It brought a democratic option into the social sciences that enabled anyone who learned the methodology to generate theory. The democratic ethos of the methodology may also have abundance of aspiring remodelers inadvertently of unleashed an the methodology, who unfortunately have eroded its primary purpose—to generate theories that are fully grounded in data rather than speculation or ideology.",
