            "abstractNote": "Reflective practice, a well-established professional development approach, involves learners\nenhancing their capability through deliberate, systematic evaluation of their thinking and\nactions. This study used a client-generated outcome measure and a coaching relationship\nmeasure to assess the effectiveness of group-based coaching development. It provides\npreliminary evidence that sessions reduced the level of concern for issues where participants\nreceived coaching, while levels of concern for issues that were not coached remained static.\nParticipants rated the coaching relationship very highly. The study presents some evidence\nfor the value of group-based reflective practice sessions, however, further research is needed\nto assess the finding’s generalisability.",

            "abstractNote": "Coach development is an under-researched phenomenon and our understanding of how coaches learn and develop is therefore limited. The current discourse of coach development is largely framed by professional bodies who have a stake, to varying degrees, in the dominant paradigm. That paradigm is informed by linear stage models of learning and development which, we argue, do not fully address the diversity of coaches, their different developmental needs nor the range of paths they follow to become experienced coaches. To access that diversity, we explore coaches’ experience of their development journey using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. We found no universal set of development activities with which coaches engage, but considerable commonality.  Our study revealed that how coaches resource and support themselves, influences, and grounds their development. Life events impact professional growth and becoming a coach affects personal identity. Rather than the transmission and mastery of a pre-determined set of skills and knowledge, facility and investment in reflexive learning emerges as the key motor of coaching excellence.",

            "abstractNote": "To understand what coaching supervisors do, I conducted an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis of practitioners’ lived experience through semi-structured interviews with three coach/supervisor dyads. The findings suggest coaching supervisors and their supervisees are clear about the defining features and tasks of coaching supervision. I propose a coaching supervision process heuristic, which describes joint exploration as an antecedent to the supervisor choosing interventions that support the functions of coaching supervision. Intuition, the supervisor’s coaching experience and their expertise in the process of coaching inform this choice. Further research is needed to develop the heuristic into a conceptual framework for coaching supervision interventions.",

            "abstractNote": "The seven principles of a ‘Coach Supervision Mindset’ were developed in 2016 when designing supervision training for internal coaches. The  intention was to supplement existing supervisor competency-based models. Bluckert’s (2006) seven principles of a coaching mindset were used as a framework, extending  each principle for coach supervision. Grounded in practice, the Coach Supervisor Mindset principles received external validation, challenge and refinement through two conference presentations. Subsequently an action research project was sponsored by the Association for Coaching, involving 48 members. This paper captures the themes arising from this process.",

            "abstractNote": "This study aims to examine the insights and development of post-graduate trainee-coaches engaged in mindfulness meditation training and how mindfulness meditation contributed to their development and performance.\n            \n              Methods:\n              Data were gathered from 67 trainee-coaches who undertook a 10-week program. The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) measured pre-and post-training results. Opinions of the training and a daily diary log system to track the time each spent in mindfulness meditation practice were used to capture the impact of the training and each trainee’s contribution to the development of their own mindfulness. Ten hypotheses were proposed.\n            \n            \n              Results:\n              An increase in mindfulness in trainee-coaches was found for the majority (85 per cent) after the practice sessions. A large majority (78 per cent) were positive about the training and practice and had found it beneficial. Those with higher levels of mindfulness, and those whose mindfulness had improved, tended to have more favourable opinions of mindfulness, showing positive effects of practice in contrast to those with lower mindfulness. These and a positive relationship between increases in mindfulness during training and the days available spent practising mindfulness are the important findings. Three hypotheses were supported. These indicated higher FFMQ scores in the students’ mindfulness meditation after the training; relationships between trainees’ FFMQ pre- and post-test scores and available days spent practicing; and opinion of their mindfulness meditation practice and the days available spent practicing. Two other hypotheses were partially supported: Relationships between FFMQ pre- and post-scores and trainees’ opinions about their mindfulness meditation practice; and between FFMQ post- and pre-scores and trainee academic achievement on the academic module in which mindfulness meditation was taught and practised. Academic performance was less directly related to mindfulness meditation training and practice and there were no significant differences between males and females on measures relating to the training and practice.\n            \n            \n              Discussion:\n              Findings on increases in mindfulness, opinions of mindfulness practice and academic performance are explained or generally supported by the literature. Practical applications, limitations and further research are also covered. The importance of training is presented in terms of the development of insights and the mindfulness skills of attention, presence, empathy, self-regulation and non-judgement, the impact of which are fundamental in mindfulness coaching.\n            \n            \n              Conclusion:\n              Mindfulness meditation training of trainee-coaches complements and aids the development of professional and personal skills. The training offers opportunities for greater interpersonal insights, and the use of mindfulness meditation in coaching practice.",

            "abstractNote": "Introduction:\n              The literature suggests that socio-cognitive mindfulness (Langer, 1989) is a suitable theory from which to develop a wellbeing coaching intervention due to its focus on environmental mastery and its links to increased wellbeing outcomes. The purpose of this study is to outline the process and the emerging findings of developing a coaching intervention based on the evidence-based strategies of socio-cognitive mindfulness.\n            \n            \n              Methods:\n              The Medical Research Council’s updated framework for developing complex interventions has been used to guide the research methods chosen to design this coaching intervention (Skivington et al., 2021). The accumulated findings from three previous studies were triangulated to refine the programme theory of the intervention. The lead researcher incorporated her practice reflections as a coaching psychologist into the programme theory to operationalise the logic model into a prototype of the intervention.\n            \n            \n              Findings:\n              A logic model was produced to articulate the findings of the method triangulation and the resulting programme theory. The mechanisms of the model include the establishment of a safe and personalised coaching environment where key coaching processes help to facilitate the activation of socio-cognitive mindfulness. By repeatedly stimulating and integrating states of socio-cognitive mindfulness into daily routines over an extended period, participants can potentially develop trait socio-cognitive mindfulness and increase the chances of sustaining meaningful wellbeing outcomes.\n            \n            \n              Conclusion:\n              As the logic model is still hypothetical at this point, the intervention prototype should now be feasibility tested prior to a full study to address some of the outstanding key uncertainties, such as who the intervention appeals to, whether participants adhere to the programme as intended and which wellbeing measures are most likely to improve.",

Music benefits wellbeing, aids new perspectives, and\nenhances embodiment, however, research on the use of music in coaching is limited. This\nstudy thematically analysed participants’ reflective texts (N=12) relating to their experience of a\none-off coaching session that integrated a self-selected piece of music as a soundtrack related\nto the session topic. Results support previous literature on the subject, while also providing\nnew findings that the soundtrack primed thinking for the session and was a motivational\nreminder of the session.",

            "abstractNote": "There is little empirical research into the benefits and experiences of coaching specifically in the outdoors. Attention Restoration Theory (ART) identifies four facets that explain why nature enables the brain to restore directed attention, improve cognitive capabilities and relieve stress. It is proposed that ART is relevant to understanding the benefits of outdoor coaching because, according to ART, natural environments can help the brain to focus more efficiently, make decisions, think creatively and process information effectively by restoring directed attention and cognitive capacity - all of which are aspects of high quality coaching conversations. The aim of the research is to identify the benefits of outdoor coaching experienced by the participants and analyse them using Attention Restoration Theory as a framework to explain these benefits. Data regarding the felt experiences of nine participants who are currently having, or recently had, outdoor coaching is analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and discussed. The key findings show six identified key themes linking the participants’ felt experiences with the four facets of ART: Being side-by-side; movement and pace; the perceived benefits of outdoors vs indoors; thinking differently; openness and expanse; senses, emotions and feelings. We conclude that there are benefits to taking coaching conversations outside and that ART is a framework that can explain these benefits.",

            "abstractNote": "Based on an increase in interest in the idea of ‘coaching whilst walking’ (e.g. Turner, 2017), this study provides an insight into the experience of coaches and clients who undertook coaching whilst walking. The research question underpinning this study is ‘what is the experience of those who undertake coaching whilst walking’? Data for this study was gathered through a series of semi-structured interviews, written reflections and audio-recorded commentary of participants. Data was analysed using Thematic Analysis (TA). The study found four overarching themes that captured the experience of the participants who had undertaken coaching whilst walking: Openness to experience; awareness of body and mind; love of the outdoors; and the experience of being ‘side by side’. The findings offer coaches and their clients important insights about the experience of coaching whilst walking and could inform decisions about whether to undertake coaching indoors or outdoors. Further research into perceived benefits, outcomes and active ingredients of coaching whilst walking is recommended.",

            "abstractNote": "Individuals are shaped by the values, pressures, and constraints of the time and place in which they grew up – each of us is a child of our time. Generation Z are the first generation to grow up with the internet, smart phones, and social media consistently available during adolescence. These technological advances have been accompanied by increased prevalence of mental-health issues and related challenges. Alongside the putative effects of such technologies, Generation Z have also grown up in cultures much more focussed on safety. During their formative years, the concept of safety was expanded to include emotional safety, which is to say a felt need that one must never be upset, and that one should believe one’s own emotional reactions unquestioningly. Such a conception of human emotion runs directly counter to the evidence base behind Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Coaching. Demand for mental health services is at an all-time high in many countries, however many of the challenges Generation Z are facing are not clinical and may ethically be supported by a sufficiently trained coaching professional. There are a number of cognitive-behavioural processes, such as psychological flexibility, that seem to fit well with some of the challenges most commonly experienced by members of Generation Z, and which coaching psychologists would be well-placed to employ with this population. With this paper we hope to start a broader conversation about the potential contribution of coaching psychology in this context.",

            "abstractNote": "Purpose\n              Recent advances in coaching technology enhanced its accessibility and affordability for a broader population. In the imposing growth of economy and the demand for extensive coaching intervention for executives, artificial intelligence (AI)-based coaching is one of the possible solutions. While the evidence of AI coaching effectiveness is expanding, a comprehensive understanding of the field remains elusive. In particular, the true potential of AI coaching tools, ethical considerations and their current functionality are subjects of ongoing investigation.\n            \n            \n              Design/methodology/approach\n              The systematic literature review was conducted to extract experimental results and concepts about utilizing AI in coaching practice. The paper presents the primary capabilities of state-of-the-art coaching tools and compares them with human coaching.\n            \n            \n              Findings\n              The review shows that AI coaching chatbots and tools are effective for narrow tasks such as goal attainment, support for various psychological conditions and induction of reflection processes. Whereas, deep long-term coaching, working alliance and individualized approach are out of current AI coaching competence. In the current state, AI coaching tools serve as complementary helping tools that cannot replace human coaching. However, they have the potential to enhance the coach’s performance and serve as valuable assistants in intricate coaching interventions.\n            \n            \n              Originality/value\n              The review offered insights into the current capabilities of AI coaching chatbots, aligned with International Coaching Federation set of competencies. The review outlined the drawbacks and benefits of chatbots and their areas of application in coaching.",

            "abstractNote": "The COVID-19 crisis transformed the coaching practice overnight from a face-to-face to online practice. This study explores the impact of how coaches are using technology and their experiences in the digital coaching environment. The study adopts a reflexive thematic analysis using semi-structured one-to-one interviews with nine executive coaches.  Several key findings emerged. First, coaches use technology mainly to perform remote coaching. Second, technology was crucial in the survival of many coaching businesses through the COVID-19 crisis. Finally, there are concerns about the risks associated with digital coaching. The paper suggests actions which coaches and professional bodies can take to mitigate.",
