"abstractNote": "Doc number: 23 Abstract Background: The mental health sector across states in Australia is moving to offering individualised funds and shared management, person-centred and self-directed (SPS) services. However, little is known about the recovery experiences of consumers with mental illness who had used a SPS service that was recently introduced in Western Australia. This study explored the recovery experiences of these consumers. Methods: Data relating to sixteen consumers' lived experiences were analysed using an abbreviated grounded theory approach. These data had been developed in the past by consumers, the Guides (staff) and an independent evaluator. Results: Four over-arching categories, and related sub-categories, emerged. These suggested that consumers' recovery experiences included them gaining: 1) a greater sense of empowerment; 2) expanded connections with the community, others and 'the self'; 3) an enriched sense of 'the self'; and 4) an enhanced quality of life. Conclusions: Access to SPS services, including having access to individualised funds, high quality shared management and person-centred relationships with the Guides, and a chance to self-direct services enabled consumers to have control over all aspects of their recovery journey, facilitated change and growth, and improved their capacity to self-direct services. Most consumers encountered a number of positive recovery experiences at varied levels that enhanced their lived experiences.",

"abstractNote": "Objective. In this study, the effectiveness of the modified Recovery Workbook as a psychoeducational tool for facilitating recovery in persons with serious mental illness was examined. Methods. The study was a multi-center, prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. A total of 33 people receiving Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) services participated in the study. For 12 weeks, a control group continued receiving their usual treatment as determined by the ACT team, and an intervention group received the Recovery Workbook training in addition to the normal standard of care from the ACT team. Groups were compared using t-tests for continuous measures and chi-squared analyses with correction for continuity of dichotomous measures, as appropriate. The overall effects of the Recovery Workbook Training on individuals' perceived level of hope, empowerment, knowledge, and quality of life were measured using a repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Team (PCCC-MHS/Frontenac) and group (experimental/control) were the between-subject factors, and time of testing (initial, final) was the within subject factor. Results. Participation in the Recovery Workbook was associated with significant change in participants' perceived sense of hope, empowerment, and goal and success orientation. These associations remained significant when commensurate demographic variables were controlled for. Conclusions. This study is the first randomized controlled trial of a recovery-based psychoeducational intervention in persons with serious mental illness, and opens a new chapter of evidence-based practice for implementing recovery in mental health service delivery.",

First, treating prisoners humanely during incarceration and ensuring a more successful transition upon reentry is directly tied to the core moral principles of each party's base. Second, failing to support prisoners equates to a failure to support some of the veterans who have sacrificed their mental health and physical well-being in service to the US. And third, the link between prisoner reentry reform and reduced criminal justice costs makes such reforms the fiscally responsible thing to do.",

"abstractNote": "The increase in the frequency and magnitude of disasters triggered by earthquakes in different regions of the Earth is a major challenge to contemporary societies. The awareness that disasters and risk are processes structured on spatial-temporal interactions maintained at the social-ecological system between the natural hazards and the vulnerabilities of socioeconomic, political and physical nature becomes utterly important in the increase of social systems' resilience. Thus, the assessment of social vulnerability plays a decisive role in understanding the factors that distinguishes individuals, households and communities, in terms of their ability to anticipate, cope with, resist to and recover from the impact of disasters triggered by natural hazards. This article presents a geographic information system (GIS)-based approach model to assess the social vulnerability to seismic risk using multicriteria analysis (MCA) techniques, in a group decision-making process. The methodology applied to the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo (São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal) identified moderate social vulnerability values at the neighbourhood level and higher social vulnerability values for the built environment and demographic characteristics of the social groups. The social vulnerability patterns make a clear distinction between the older/historical urban cores and the new urban areas. In the first case, the presence of ancient buildings constructed with materials of low resistance to earthquakes coupled with a higher population density and the traits of demographic and socioeconomic frailties of the social groups, results in higher vulnerability values. This pattern is common in the historic centre of S. Miguel district, Ribeira das Taínhas, northern areas of Água de Alto and western and eastern neighbourhoods of Ponta Garça. The new urban areas, mainly found in S. Pedro, central areas of Água de Alto, S. Miguel and Ponta Garça districts, have lower values of social vulnerability due to changes in the built, demographic and socioeconomic environments. Results recommend the integration of social vulnerability indexes into seismic risk mitigation policies and emergency management planning.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]",

"abstractNote": "Doc number: 20 Abstract Background: Mental health service providers across Australia, including Western Australia (WA), have begun to offer individualised funds, shared management, person-centred and self-directed (SPS) services. No research exists on the impact of SPS services on the lived experiences of these particular consumers. This study explored the impact of a SPS service offered for the first time in WA to consumers with mental illness. Methods: Data on sixteen consumers' lived experiences were analysed using an abbreviated grounded theory approach. These data had been developed by the consumers, Guides (staff) and an independent evaluator, and most of it had been collected in the past prior to the commencement of the study. Results: Three over-arching categories, and related subcategories, emerged indicating that 1) access to individualised funds enabled practical and psychological benefits to consumers; 2) consistent contact in shared management and person-centred relationships enhanced the provision of timely and meaningful staff support to consumers; and 3) high quality shared management and person-centred relationships with staff and the opportunity to self-direct enabled consumers' change and growth. Conclusions: SPS services enhanced consumers' lived experiences and enabled staff to provide and consumers to experience timely access to recovery resources, consistent contact, responsive and high quality support, and self-direction of services. In this, consumers changed, grew and achieved desired recovery experiences. The overall impact of the SPS service seemed to be founded on the goodness of fit between person characteristics of staff and consumers, which enabled rich support that provided for corrective emotional experiences. This enabled consumers to build meaningful and hopeful lives where they started to live with, and beyond, their mental illness.",

"abstractNote": "Part of a special issue on religion in the United States. The Bush administration has pushed the efforts of social ministers into the spotlight of national politics, making these ministers the subject of considerable scrutiny. Prison Fellowship and Teen Challenge, two of Bush's favorite groups, are drawing particular attention; both are Christian evangelical organizations that blend practical assistance in job training and basic life skills with Bible instruction and worship. Bush appears to trust instinctively in the potential of faith-based organizations, but persuading Congress to fund the efforts of the faithful requires understanding of religious approaches to problems such as crime or drug addiction, convincing evidence that such groups are effectively helping people in need, and assurances that public funds will not be used directly to advance religion. "abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of providing recovery support services to clients receiving publicly funded chemical dependency (CD) treatment through the Access to Recovery (ATR) Program in Washington State. Services included case management, transportation, housing, and medical. A comparison group composed of clients who received CD treatment only was constructed using a multistep procedure based on propensity scores and exact matching on specific variables. Outcomes were obtained from administrative data sources. Results indicated that ATR services were associated with a number of positive outcomes including increased length of stay in treatment, increased likelihood of completing treatment, and increased likelihood of becoming employed. The beneficial effects of ATR services on treatment retention were most pronounced when they were provided between 31 and 180 days after treatment began. The results reported here offer evidence for the value of ATR services.",

"abstractNote": "The devastating eruptions of Mount Tungurahua in the Ecuadorian highlands in 1999 and 2006, left many communities struggling to rebuild their homes and others permanently displaced to settlements built by state and nongovernmental organizations. For several years afterward, households diversified their economic strategies to compensate for losses, communities organized to promote local development, and the state and nongovernmental organizations sponsored many economic recovery programs in the affected communities. The study examined the ways in which gender and gender roles were associated with different levels and paths of access to scarce resources in these communities. Specifically, this article contrasts the experiences of men and women in accessing household necessities and project assistance through formal institutions and informal networks. This evidence should be used to build more robust local institutions that can resist wider social and cultural pressures for male dominance and gendered exclusion.",

"abstractNote": "Background Mental health service providers across Australia, including Western Australia (WA), have begun to offer individualised funds, shared management, person-centred and self-directed (SPS) services. No research exists on the impact of SPS services on the lived experiences of these particular consumers. This study explored the impact of a SPS service offered for the first time in WA to consumers with mental illness. Methods Data on sixteen consumers' lived experiences were analysed using an abbreviated grounded theory approach. These data developed by the consumers, Guides (staff) and an independent evaluator had been collected in the past prior to the commencement of the study. Results Three over-arching categories, and related subcategories, emerged indicating that 1) access to individualised funds enabled practical and psychological benefits to consumers; 2) consistent contact in shared management and person-centred relationships enhanced the provision of timely and meaningful staff support to consumers; and 3) high quality shared management and person-centred relationships with staff and the opportunity to self-direct enabled consumers' change and growth. Conclusions SPS services enhanced consumers' lived experiences and enabled staff to provide and consumers to experience timely access to recovery resources, consistent contact, and responsive and high quality support, and self-direction of services. In this, consumers changed, grew and achieved desired recovery experiences. The overall impact of the SPS service seemed to be founded on the goodness of fit between person characteristics of staff and consumers, which enabled rich support that provided for corrective emotional experiences. This enabled them to build meaningful and hopeful lives where they started to live with, and beyond, their mental illness.",

"abstractNote": "Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which the two visions of recovery that are now being developed in the UK are consistent with each other and question what impact the development of parallel approaches will have on people at the intersections between them. Design/methodology/approach - The paper looks first at the origins and current implementation of the two approaches and then examines the commonalities and differences in the context of what they might mean for people using both sets of services simultaneously. Findings - The ideas behind Recovery in mental health and substance misuse services have some differences but significant common ground in focusing on improving quality of life. Research limitations/implications - This paper points to the need to understand recovery in both services from the perspectives of those who have a dual diagnosis and need support from each service. Practical implications - This paper could be used to develop new approaches to supporting people with a dual diagnosis with a consistent Recovery focus. Originality/value - Placing personal recovery at the heart of both mental health and substance misuse services may, over time, improve their efficiency and effectiveness.",
