However, existing local water management practices in these wetlands are often overlooked. This article looks at the irrigation activities of alpaca herders in the community of Ccarhuancho in the Central Andes of Peru. For more than two centuries, they have been constructing small-scale irrigation canals to maintain and expand the local wetlands, called bofedales. The seminomadic character of alpaca herders complicates irrigated wetland activities, such as operation and maintenance. Climate change and human and animal population pressure have increased not only the importance of these irrigation systems but also of local conflicts and communal decision making. Local irrigation activities in Ccarhuancho go unnoticed in broader water governance arenas because of its remoteness, limits to what popular new analytical tools can measure, a general undervaluation of wetlands, and a tendency of the canals to merge over time with the surrounding bofedales, making them less visible. Nevertheless, these man-made systems account for 40% of the wetlands in the study area and risk being seriously degraded or destroyed without local water management. With climatic changes affecting existing natural wetlands, the local herders were the first to recognize and respond to these changes and to defend the wetlands against degradation. Their efforts are, however, largely overlooked, even though such local water governance practices are crucial for the success of regional and national water governance in the Andes and other mountain areas. In contrast to the traditional regional school which offers static descriptions of particular places and people, reconstructed regional geography approaches the region as a dynamic process where social relations are linked to spatial structures. Reconstructed regional geography, however, has largely neglected gender as a social category and focuses on class as the fundamental social relation under capitalism. This paper demonstrates how regions are constructed through social processes which include gender as well as class. Historical and contemporary analyses of women and household economic strategies in rural Appalachia illustrate the intersection of gender, place, and scale. Specifically, employment and poverty conditions are examined using county-level data and household strategies are analyzed through intensive interviews with West Virginia women. These seed systems are decentralized and dynamic and consist of biophysical, knowledge, cultural and socioeconomic subsystems. Potato landrace diversity, informal seed systems and conservation are highly interlinked and integrated. Landrace seed systems can be conceived as an overlay of agrobiodiversity, which determines temporal patterning. The informal seed system of potato landraces has many qualities and some major deficiencies. Many of these deficiencies are the result of changes in farmers' livelihood systems. Even problems, which appear as strictly seed related, cannot be treated in isolation from the livelihood context in which they occur. The kinds of changes which have occurred in livelihood systems and hence the problems which have emerged in the embedded seed systems vary considerably with the regional or local socioeconomic context. Hence, understanding the changing context of farmer livelihoods is a precondition for appropriate interventions in seed systems. Links between informal seed systems and the conservation of diverse potato landraces have been scarcely studied and little is known about intrinsic relationships. The detailed characterization and documentation of these relationships and the identification of bottlenecks is a priority. Participatory and development-oriented research could help resolve the major bottlenecks. Local capacity-building as a solution for problems identified and prioritized by farmers will add to the sustainability of interventions. There are options for increased linkage between formal and informal seed systems, but changes in seed legislation and certification are needed for this to be effective. There are valuable lessons to be learned from previous interventions in potato seed systems. A precondition for upscaling is documentation, monitoring, systematization and social learning. A major limitation is the closed institutional environment that is characteristic of national in situ conservation projects and programmes in the Andean region. Situated within a feminist geographical framework that is informed by feminist materialism and livelihoods analyses, it focuses on both historical and contemporary socioeconomic, cultural, and political forces at various scales of analysis that either enable or restrict women's ways of 'making due' in the two regions. The study focuses on five counties in northern West Virginia in the Appalachian region and Limpopo, including the former bantustan of Venda, in South Africa and utilizes a qualitative methodology. Through individual interviews, focus groups, and survey data, the dissertation tells the stories of how women heading households in West Virginia and Limpopo piece together work in both the formal and informal economies; government assistance programs; subsistence agricultural activities; family and community support; and co-habitation and 'doubling-up' strategies to construct a livelihood that will support their families. With respect to their livelihood strategies, this research analyzes how they are accessed and utilized; associated benefits and drawbacks; and how they fit with women's productive and reproductive responsibilities. It is argued that while women's livelihood strategies in the two regions are embedded in specific contexts and local household and community relations, they are connected to broader socioeconomic and political processes that operate similarly across place. Moving across laboratories, greenhouses, forests and farms, it weaves together a symmetrical analysis of two kinds of local-practitioners--soil scientists in the capital city of Bogotá and small farmers in the southwestern frontier department of Putumayo--to track how soils emerge with political importance in the construction of what I call agro-life proposals for peace in the Colombian Amazon. Theoretically, it interrogates concepts of \"sustainability\" emerging among scientists and farmers, suggesting they imply a complex reframing of liberal notions of property, health, wellbeing, labor and autonomy. Seventy-five women were surveyed with a questionnaire and subsets interviewed in-depth; focus groups conducted for women and men provided a means of cross-checking responses. Three distinct areas of agrobiodiversity were addressed: the gendered divisions of labour among agricultural tasks; the pervasiveness of seed saving among respondents; and seed management practices and techniques. The results indicate that while men have greater authority over field activities, homegarden production is the exclusive domain of women. Seed management is seen as an extension of women's domestic duties: women are responsible for all seed processing, storage and exchange for field as well as homegarden crops. The research findings show that marriage decisions do not favor the continuation of the existing socioeconomic system because women prefer husbands with non-agricultural occupations. The restructuring of households which accompany rural transformations changes the complex household division of labor into a simple, categorical gender division of labor. In the \"traditional\" village setting, the division of labor between men and women occurs within productive activities. In the lives of urban household-migrants, however, the gender division of labor is differentiated at a higher level of abstraction between men's \"production\" and women's \"reproduction.\" The change in the gender division of labor is a qualitative change, detaching women's labor from direct production.
The theoretical implication of these findings is that a trans-historical cross-cultural dichotomization of men's and women's roles of \"production\" and \"reproduction\" is incorrect. These categories which are specific to capitalism and the researchers' folk models should not be portrayed as universal \"naturalized categories.\"

Findings reveal that, although gardens offer multiple benefits, they are overwhelmingly devoted to the cultivation of medicinal plants, operating as de facto medicine cabinets that supply women with most of the resources they need to treat family illnesses. Results also suggest that the natural history of home gardens mirrors transformations within the family, and that Saraguro women study the contents of their neighbors' gardens, using this knowledge as a foundation for deciphering the owners' economic and health status. In this study conducted between 2003 and 2006, the farmer-driven in-situ conservation of potato in the central Andes of Peru is investigated at different system levels from alleles, cultivars, and botanical species up to the level of the landscape, as well as the interconnected seed and food systems. Chapter 1 provides a brief description of the study area and an overview of the research methods used. In chapter 2, the species, morphological and molecular diversity of Andean potatoes in Huancavelica is treated at different scales of conservation: farmer family, community, geographically distanced, regional, in-situ and ex-situ subpopulations. The indigenous biosystematics of potatoes (folk taxonomy, folk descriptors and nomenclature) is investigated in chapter 3. Annual spatial management of the potato consists of cropping and labour calendars, field scattering practices, and genotype by environment management. These three dimensions of agrobiodiversity management are explored in chapter 4. Chapter 5 investigates three specific dimensions of land use to gain insights into possible contemporary changes affecting the in-situ conservation of potato genetic resources: land use tendencies, rotation designs and their intensity, and sectoral fallowing systems. The southeast Ohio farmers have formed an agricultural community that creates a strong local food system and boasts one of the best farmer's markets in the nation. Contrary to national agricultural statistics, which highlight the declining number of farmers, I examine the lives, interactions, and experiences of farming families in an area where the number of farmers is growing. Through extensive research and relying on the theoretical framework of Dewey (1927), I provide an organizational communication analysis of informal organizational and community organizing.\nThis dissertation analyzes the organizing practices of area farmers shaping the local food economy and explores how these farming families negotiate tensions and paradoxes inherent to family farms, which serve as sites for both agriculture production and family homes. Through studying organizational vocational and anticipatory socialization (Jablin, 1987), processes of organizational identification (Cheney, 1983), and non-traditional organizational structures (Harter & Krone, 2001), I examine the unique local food system made by family farmers' informal organizational structure(s) in southeast Ohio Appalachia and their organizing practices in the name of 'good food.'\nThe findings of this study conclude that farmers in the Appalachian area organize themselves in a very successful manner, yet outside of traditional and alternative understandings of organizational structure and organizational socialization. The results of this study revolve around five main themes: the democratization of farming, the politics of family farming, farming as occupation and identity, the contested meaning of 'good food,' and the role community plays in thinking globally while acting locally.\nResults of the analysis highlight tensions created by the presence of the government in the regulation of farming, the inescapable political statements made by farmers due to their growing methods, the socialization of and identity into the farming occupation, the similarities and differences of the Appalachia area compared to the slow food movement, the trials, tribulations, and experiences of farming families in the quest to grow, sell, and consume good food, the farmers' approach to food as a social movement, and the role family farmers play in relation to the neighboring community, town, county, state, and nation.\nI argue that this farming community succeeds without a formal or recognizably alternative organizational structure (see Harter & Krone, 2001), and more is left to learn about how these populations informally organize themselves around social and environmental movements. The data used in the study were produced in three research periods, 1950, 1971 and 1986, in two agricultural villages and among emigrants from those villages. The total number of observations in all research periods includes 881 households and 4950 individuals. The author has participated in the research in 1986 and 1989, doing fieldwork in the two villages and among migrant households in various Turkish towns.\nThe objective of this dissertation is to provide a gender-sensitive ethnography of production relations and labor patterns as observed and reported by the villagers, and changes in these patterns. Rural transformations in both villages include changes in agriculture, the establishment of the \"putting-out-system\" in commercial carpet weaving, construction work in pendular migration, international labor migration, and rural-urban household migration. There were differences in the transformations of the two villages which stem from the differential availability of land per capita. These transformations influence gender relations and are in turn influenced by the cultural definitions of gender.\nThe research findings show that marriage decisions do not favor the continuation of the existing socioeconomic system because women prefer husbands with non-agricultural occupations. The restructuring of households which accompany rural transformations changes the complex household division of labor into a simple, categorical gender division of labor. In the \"traditional\" village setting, the division of labor between men and women occurs within productive activities. In the lives of urban household-migrants, however, the gender division of labor is differentiated at a higher level of abstraction between men's \"production\" and women's \"reproduction.\" The change in the gender division of labor is a qualitative change, detaching women's labor from direct production.\nThe theoretical implication of these findings is that a trans-historical cross-cultural dichotomization of men's and women's roles of \"production\" and \"reproduction\" is incorrect. The methods of household- and community-level surveys are used to reconstruct the recent history of changes in rural resource portfolios and management. A conceptual framework is developed that builds on the idea of \"economies of scope\" in diversified livelihood activities amid the policy environments of neoliberal and neopopulist governments (1985-2007). Analysis treats the relation of Andean maize cultivation to the viability of the local maize-beer (chicha) market and migration activities. Maize biodiversity for beer production is found to occur in the context of the diversified economic activities of chola households (women vendors), whose activities present these households with complex \"economy of scope\"-type advantages that are subject to conjugal contestations.
