Therefore, it is important for career counselors to understand how past academic underachievement affects students' current lives and to develop interventions that might ameliorate negative effects. This study examined the experiences of 9 ethnically diverse college students who had experienced and overcome academic failure. Data were collected by individual interviews and analyzed based on the consensual qualitative research method. Four themes emerged in relation to participants' academic underachievement and recovery: attitude, study strategies, external support, and coping difficulties. Results indicated high school GPA was best predicted by general self-efficacy, whereas current GPA was most strongly related to self-efficacy for learning. However, academic competence did not moderate either self-efficacy or academic performance. Career path certainty was best explained by general self-efficacy and job competence, and scholastic competence best predicted current academic performance. Although students tend to be overconfident about their future academic performance, they revise their expectations in expected ways. The updating process is found to be consistent with a Bayesian learning model. I show that learning plays a role in the decision to switch majors and that major switchers respond to information from their own major. The study used the national dataset of the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002), funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Based on a path model, results demonstrated that family background predicted academic self-efficacy positively and students' career and life success expectations negatively. However, with the mediating influence of academic self-efficacy, family background positively influenced students' career and life success expectations. School counselors should consider interventions to enhance interactions between parents and students and seek to develop positive perceptions about students' capabilities and futures. When controlling for prior depression, the mean effect of prior academic achievement on subsequent depression was β = −.06. The correlation between prior academic achievement and subsequent depression decreased as the time between assessments increased. The relation was relatively stronger in children than in young adults. Demographic variables, including gender, ethnicity, and birth cohort, did not moderate the relation between academic achievement and subsequent depression.
