They must also consider what will happen if libraries abolish most or all of their books. This paper aims to explore current and future academic e-book usage, and to suggest ideas for response to collection changes. Design/methodology/approach – This article examines a wide range of studies and comments on this timely topic. Findings – The disparity between the reception of e-books in the general population and the adoption of them in the academic world suggests that print is still important to faculty and students. Given the advances in e-book technology, the increasing popularity of online/distance education courses, the adoption of the new EPUB 3 format, and the ubiquity of mobile devices, e-books are expected increasingly to replace print volumes in academic libraries. Originality/value – What has received little attention in the literature is the complexity of the issue of e-book reception in the academic world. This article looks at current and future e-book usage from the perspective of several large studies on diverse aspects of academic life, including students' perceptions of libraries, their information-seeking behaviors, faculty research habits and information needs, students' reading habits, and the impact of emerging technologies on teaching and learning. Providing insight into current and future academic e-book trends, this article suggests practical ways to respond to these trends. All the same, we naturally recognize the several parts of the book industry: the publisher, the bookseller, the library etc. ICTs have considerably changed this context in a different way compared to what happened with other cultural' products. The introduction of the MP3 format in music, for instance, involved a change of support for an essentially identical product, whereas the digital book seems to imply a radical change of form too. An e-book cannot be called a book in the traditional sense of the word, as it can contain hypertext, multimedia and interactive elements that make it more similar to an oral storytelling rather than to a written text. The book industry all over the world is deeply involved in this substantial change. Writing, publishing, selling and reading a book will never be the same, and the roles and places of the books' supply chain - the publisher, the bookseller, the library etc. - are changing quickly. The second Unesco World Forum on culture and cultural industries (Monza, 6-8 June 2011) dealt with \"The book tomorrow: the future of the written word\", and focused on three essential issues resulting from this new setting: the e-book economy, the future of copyright, and the function of the library in the digital environment. This paper presents some of the results of a wide discussion that involved major experts in the field, suggesting that - given the extent of the issues at stake - the future of the book has just began. While publishers continued to offer more bundles of electronic publications, librarians responded with strategies to collaborate and negotiate for feasible pricing structures. A culture of continuous assessment was a major topic. During this review period, access to and ownership of digital resources reemerged as a pervasive theme. The mood of the literature was generally optimistic in light of the considerable challenges libraries faced in managing their resources to accommodate the rapidly growing and ever-shifting digital landscape.
