The Student Support Services Program was originally funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 as Special Services for Disadvantaged Students. This name was changed to the current Student Support Services Program in 1972, when the original programs were transferred from the Office of Economic Opportunity to the Office of Higher Education Programs.\nVery few research studies have been conducted to ascertain why and how Student Support Services work to retain students, especially students of color, although numerous statistical data have been gathered throughout the years. Therefore, this study was conducted specifically to determine if the length of time eligible students spend in the Student Support Services Program increases their persistence and graduation rates. The population of the study was comprised of 566 Student Support Services program participants who were enrolled at Iowa State University from 1983-1999. Three major findings indicate that the number of contact hours has a positive influence on (1) grade point average, (2) total credit hours attempted, and (3) the propensity to graduate from the institution in a reasonable amount of time. With student attrition rates reaching between 30 and 50 per cent in the United States, and over 20 per cent in Australia, the inability of higher education institutions to retain their students is a significant issue. This paper cites key risk factors which place students at risk of non-completion, which include mental health issues, disability, socioeconomic status and ethnicity. Furthermore, first year students and higher degree by research students are susceptible to attrition. The capacity of a student to develop a sense of belonging within the higher education institution is recognised by this paper as a being a critical factor determining student retention. The creation of a caring, supportive and welcoming environment within the university is critical in creating a sense of belonging. This can be achieved by the development of positive student/faculty relationships, the presence of a well resourced counselling centre and the encouragement of diversity and difference.", Participants were 160 Asian American, African American, and Latino students who attended a predominantly White university. Results of a path model analysis showed that university environment was a significant mediator for the association between minority status stress and college persistence attitudes. Additionally, minority status stress was distinct from perceived general stress. Finally, the results from a multiple-group comparison indicated that the magnitude of the mediation effect was invariant across Asian American, African American, and Latino college students, thus supporting the generalizability of the mediation model. The objective focused on influences of the campus experience on students’ ethnic identity development when they entered and as they prepared to graduate from college. Students were asked to reflect on how development of their ethnic identity intersected with outcomes as critical thinking, communication skills, and sense of competence. Findings include an increased learning about one’s ethnic group has cognitive and noncognitive benefits. Students felt further development of their ethnic identity had a considerable, positive impact on their sense of competence, sense of belonging, interpersonal relationships, and commitments. Students' openness was positively associated with (a) feeling that the university was committed to diversity issues, (b) taking diversity courses, and (c) interacting with students of a different racial or ethnic group. Among students of color, openness was significantly predicted by (a) the racial diversity of students' friendship group, (b) feeling that the university supported ethnic and religious support networks, and (c) taking diversity courses. A second purpose was to determine if students from different ethnic backgrounds differed in their perception and use of student support programs, services, and activities at SCC. A third purpose was to determine if successful students experienced the typical problems and obstacles usually associated with students who are not so successful in community college. A custom survey and three focus groups were the primary means of gathering data and information from students. The findings suggested that most student support programs and services at Seminole Community College do in fact contribute to student success. Student activities, however, do not contribute as much. In comparing the major ethnic groups, results of statistical tests indicated that Hispanic and African American students at SCC preferred specific student support programs, services, and activities compared to Caucasian students. With regard to problems and obstacles, students in this research study experienced both in varying degrees. A recommendation was made to encourage use of support programs and services based on student ethnicity. Another recommendation was to investigate the overall effectiveness of student activities. A third recommendation was to use the African American and Hispanic clubs on campus to communicate the findings of this research study. Learning communities have been used as a curricular structure to help support students’ intellectual, personal, and social growth while they are in college. This study investigated first-year college experiences, from the student perspective, as members of a learning community which featured support services and linked developmental English and learning success courses in a rural northern California community college. Participants included a cohort of first-year college students (N=53) affected by educational, social or economic disadvantages and receiving services from Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS). A mixed method research design was used including pre- and post-test data collected from the Noel-Levitz College Student Inventory (CSI), a locally developed survey, and focus groups. Major findings suggest that establishing relationships and being able to respond to needed academic or personal support were the most helpful aspects of the EOPS Learning Community. Overall satisfaction with the learning community experience was correlated with student satisfaction with on of the two courses.
