One hundred REM, 100 NREM, and 100 wake reports were collected in the home from 8 men and 7 women using the Nightcap sleep-wake mentation-monitoring system and scored for number and variety of social interactions. We found that (a) social interactions were more likely to be depicted in dream than in wake reports, (b) aggressive social interactions were more characteristic of REM than NREM or wake reports, and (c) dreamer-initiated friendliness was more characteristic of NREM than REM reports. Peak levels of plasma radioactivity occurred in 1-2 hr after oral administration. The dose was 10 mg/kg in rats and dogs, and 50 or 500 mg in man. Most of the drug in plasma was intact MK-647 which was extensively bound to plasma protein. In man the peak concentration following the 500-mg dose was approximately 10 times that after the lower dose, which suggests that absorption rates of both doses were similar. Elimination of drug from plasma was dose-dependent. The area under the curve for MK-647-14C in plasma was 18 times higher following the 500-mg dose than the 50-mg dose. Dogs given 10 mg/kg orally or intravenously excreted 44% of the dose in the urine and 42% in the feces in 72 hr. Rats given the same dose level by either route of administration excreted 80% in the urine and 11% in the feces. In man approximately 95% of a 50- or 500-mg oral dose was excreted in the urine and 3% in the feces, in 96 hr. MK-647 and two metabolites were present in the urine of three species. The ether and ester glucuronides were identified in human urine. The latter metabolite was also identified in rat and dog urine. The glycine conjugate of MK-647 was not observed in the urine of the three species. No interaction was observed between MK-647 and bishydroxycoumarin in the prothrombin time test nor with tolbutamide in the glucose tolerance test. A significant lowering of hexobarbital sleeping time was observed in female, but not male rats after four consecutive daily doses of MK-647. Specifically, increased activity in the amygdala and across mesolimbic dopaminergic regions during REM sleep is likely to promote the consolidation of memory traces with high emotional/motivational value. Moreover, coordinated hippocampal-striatal replay during NREM sleep may contribute to the selective strengthening of memories for important events. In this review, we suggest that, via the activation of emotional/motivational circuits, sleep and dreaming may offer a neurobehavioral substrate for the offline reprocessing of emotions, associative learning, and exploratory behaviors, resulting in improved memory organization, waking emotion regulation, social skills, and creativity. This study builds on previous research that confirmed the occurrence and sources of conflict among these informants. Seventeen parents whose children had a diagnosis of cancer were interviewed in this study. A priori coding was used to identify the specific strategies for dealing with conflict proposed by Rubin and associates. Ginsburg’s approach to narrative analysis was used to examine parent’s stories. Findings were that parents used the strategies of problem solving, yielding, withdrawing, inaction, and contending identified by Rubin and associates in reaction to conflict with health care providers. Following episodes of contending, many parents in the study reframed the conflict and experienced transformations or turning points, resolving to become more effective advocates for their children. My friend Harold Heie has a passionate commitment to fostering respectful conversations on the internet about difficult topics among evangelicals. Heie is Senior Fellow at the Center for Faith and Inquiry at Gordon College (full bio here). He is the author of Learning to Listen, Ready to Talk: A Pilgrimage Toward Peacemaking and Evangelicals on Public Policy Issues: Sustaining a Respectful Political Conversation.

\n

His recent book tackles another difficult topic:  A Future for American Evangelicalism: Commitment, Openness, and Conversation, where Heie summarizes and reflects on an eCircle conversation he hosted on his blog in 2013,“American Evangelicalism: Present conditions, Future Possibilities.” (See also myearlier post.) That conversation took place among 26 evangelical thinkers, including me, John R. Franke, Karl Giberson, Jeannine Brown, Christopher M. Hays, Richard Mouw, Amos Yong,  John Wilson, and Molly Worthen.

\n

After two brief introductory chapters (“American Evangelicalism and the Broader Christian Tradition” and “Continuing the Conversation”), Heie covers over the next 7 chapters the issues that were addressed in the original eCircle conversation.

\n\n

Nothing controversial at all in these topics. Back to your homes, citizens. Nothing to see here.

\n

In this volume, Heie does what he does best: he assembled a group of thinkers representing diverse points of view, who are (see subtitle) committed to what they believe, are open to hearing what others have to say, and demonstrate that openness by engaging in a respectful conversation with others.

\n

I have to say, that’s hard to pull off for a person like me, seeing that I know I’m basically right most of the time (just ask my wife) and wish everyone else would see it so the world would be a happier place.

\n

On the other hand, Heie opens the volume with a favorite quote of his from the late Ian Barbour:

\n

It is by no means easy to hold beliefs for which you would be willing to die, and yet to remain open to new insights; but it is precisely such a combination of commitment and inquiry that constitutes religious maturity (Myths, Models and Paradigms, p. 138).

\n

True, that is “by no means easy” but a worthy endeavor nonetheless. I promise to try harder. In the meantime, Heie is already pulling it off.

\n

If you want a break from internet rancor and ideological battles, Heie walks the walk and talks the talk.

Harold Heie is a Senior Fellow at The Colossian Forum. He previously served as Founding Director of the Center for Christian Studies at Gordon College (now the Center for Faith and Inquiry) and as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Messiah College and Northwestern College in Iowa after teaching mathematics at Gordon College and the King's College. He holds a PhD in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University and served as a trustee for the Center for Public Justice and as a Senior Fellow at the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). His publications include Learning to Listen, Ready to Talk: A Pilgrimage Toward Peacemaking (2007), Mutual Treasure: Seeking Better Ways for Christians and Culture to Converse (2009), and Evangelicals on Public Policy Issues: Sustaining a Respectful Political Conversation (2014).
