            "note": "This report presents work done by participating General Educational Development (GED), adult basic education (ABE), and English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) instructors in collaboration with the Institute for Literacy Studies at Lehman College (City University of New York). The report is in three sections. The first section is a statement, in list form, of what workshop participants agreed represents components of their philosophy on teaching and learning. The second lists and defines the classroom strategies that seem to fit the philosophy best, and, where possible, offers brief examples of how these approaches have worked or might work in the classroom. The classroom strategies include student-centered and writing-to-learn approaches, collaborative approaches, and interview techniques. The third section offers sample lessons and projects designed by participating teachers, individually or collaboratively, and implemented based on workshop readings, writings, and discussions. Projects are listed under the following headings: GED units on the Constitution, on developing questions that motivate, on research journals for home care workers, and on activating background knowledge in geometry; Spanish GED units on reading, writing, and oral history, and on writing and publishing poetry; a GED unit on math; an ABE unit on using the newspaper to explore life and work in New York City; and an ESL unit on developing writing skills and union participation through oral history.             "note": "A dynamic story is a story in which the reader must make choices about the direction the story will take at pivotal points in the plot. Because of their interactive nature, dynamic stories may be used to effectively teach English as a Second Language (ESL). Existing dynamic stories, however, are usually inadequate for this purpose. In book form, they involve too much page flipping, while those stories available on computer software are either aimed at a very young audience, or use a lexicon that non-native English speakers would neither know nor need to know. A better way to employ these stories in the ESL classroom is to have students create the stories. By writing such stories, students improve their lexical and grammar skills, and learn about the process of writing while gaining confidence in their English abilities. A method is described here for the classroom creation of computer-based dynamic stories using commercially available, user-friendly software. One example of this method is detailed, and several story \"openings\" are appended. (JL)",

            "note": "An overview is presented of the ways in which various types of computer software and instructional strategies can be used effectively with English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) adult literacy learners. Computer use in language and literacy development in general is first reviewed. It is then noted that in spite of the progress made in hardware and software development and toward integrating computers into adult ESL language and literacy instruction, the effectiveness of computer assisted instruction (CAI) is still largely dependent on the ability of instructors to choose, adapt, and use computer programs effectively. Some of the problems are discussed, such as the lack of instructional approaches for developing both language and literacy skills simultaneously. Instructors are advised to use software that allows them to alter the content vis an authoring or editing option in the software package, or to design activities within a larger framework. The use of word processors and collaborative writing is also considered. CAI is concluded to be an effective experience for adult ESL literacy learners and their instructors, especially when it is used to facilitate interpersonal communication as well as language and literacy skills development.             "note": "Use of group story writing in second language classes is discussed, and specific instructional techniques are outlined. In this activity, students sit in a circle and each begins to write a story. The story beginning is passed to the next student, who adds a portion and passes the story on. This pattern continues until stories are completed and each student has his original paper. The result is a number of stories, each completely different, written by the same students. Students then read and discuss the stories, correcting as needed. The activity may be used to review vocabulary or grammar, be included in cultural lessons, such as discussion of holidays or traditions, or be based on photographs or pictures. The activity is appealing to students as an alternative to conventional, more academic writing exercises. Suggestions are made concerning timing of the exercise, group size, error correction, revision, and whether to provide a beginning sentence or have students create their own. Considerations based on students' cultural background or the mix of cultures represented are also discussed. Sample grammar-based, vocabulary-based, theme-based, and picture-based lessons using the chain story method are outlined in detail, with illustrations. (MSE)",
