"abstractNote": "The organization of talent in online communities has been pivotal for the development of open source\nsoftware. We are currently witnessing a related phenomenon that is at least of equal importance: the ‘opensourcing’ of digital content through a dramatic increase in user-generated content and the development of\nappropriate licenses for users to share their works and build on each other's creativity. This article compares\nand contrasts (a) the objectives of software development vis-à-vis the development of new media content,\n(b) the organizational forms that have developed in respective online communities, and (c) the role that\nlicensing plays in the production of ‘functional’ vis-à-vis ‘cultural’ goods.",

"note": "Intrguing article that in the follow three quotes starts to get at an important connection between remixing and modularity. There is some interesting insight that basically boils down to the way that artistic products can be modularized in the same one, but it's a pretty quick and dirty observation and not something that Manovich takes the time really unpack in the detail the insight probably deserves.
\nIt is modularity without a priori defined vocabulary. In this scenario, any well-defined part of any finished cultural object can automatically become a building block for new objects in the same medium. Parts can even ‘publish’ themselves and other cultural objects can “subscribe” to them the way you subscribe now to RSS feeds or podcasts.
\ncultural modularity seems to be governed by a diffirent logic than industrial modularity. On the one hand, “mass culture” is made possible by a complete industrial-type modularity on the levels of packaging and distribution.
\nwhat seems to be happening is that the \"users\" themselves have been gradually \"modularising\" culture. In other words, modularity has been coming into modern culture from the outside, so to speak, rather than being built-in, as in industrial production.
