            "note": "<p>This is a literature review, but not the kind that comes up with a summary of findings. Instead, it analyzes implicit theoretical foundations, and gives examples. Remillard comes up with four categories that are not mutually exclusive:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Following or Subverting (Fidelity)\n<ul>\n<li>Sees curriculum as fixed, fidelity as possible and desirable, epistemologically positivist</li>\n<li>Asks the question, to what extent and under what circumstances do teachers use curriculum with fidelity? How can fidelity be increased?</li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n<li>Drawing on (Teacher is an active designer of the enacted curriculum)\n<ul>\n<li>Curriculum is one of many resources teachers draw upon.</li>\n<li>Epistemologically positivist or interpretivist</li>\n<li>What influences the choices that teachers make? how are their choices played out in classrooms?</li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n<li>Interpreting\n<ul>\n<li>Teachers make meaning from curriculum. Related to reader-response literary theory</li>\n<li>Beliefs, orientations, knowledge, context all influence how teachers make sense of curriculum</li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n<li>Participating with\n<ul>\n<li>Curriculum is an artifact or tool that is used to communicate with others, so there is no such thing as fidelity. The teacher is influenced by the curriculum.</li>\n<li>Related to sociocultural theories.</li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n<li>Table on p.217</li>\n</ul>\n<p>There's a suggested framework for future research toward the end.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>",

            "abstractNote": "Part of a special section on effective professional development.  A life-cycle model for career teachers is presented.  The model is based on the premise that teachers will continue to grow and develop throughout their professional lifetime if they are provided with the appropriate learning environment, and its strength is its emphasis on the processes of how teachers continue to grow and become more competent as they move along the continuum of practice.  The model identifies six phases of development—novice, apprentice, professional, expert, distinguished, and emeritus—and presents a vision of good practice based on the transfer of knowledge and contextual experience from one phase to another.  Ideas from the model can be implemented by teacher educators, administrators, and colleagues to assist teachers at any career stage.",

            "abstractNote": "In the present study the relationship between teaching and learning was examined using a conceptual framework that links dimensions of instructional tasks with gains in student learning outcomes. The greatest student gains on a performance assessment consisting of tasks that require high levels of mathematical thinking and reasoning were related to the use of instructional tasks that engaged students in the “doing of mathematics” or the use of procedures with connections to meaning. In addition, student performance gains were greater for those sites whose tasks were both set up and implemented to encourage the use of multiple solution strategies, multiple representations, and explanations. Whereas, student performance gains were relatively small for those sites whose tasks tended to be both set up and implemented in a procedural manner and that required a single solution strategy, single representations, and little or no mathematical communication.",

            "note": "<p>This article investigates the <em>structure </em>of secondary pre-service teachers' beliefs. That is, it is not enough to look at what teachers believe or even how strongly they believe it. We must also consider the connections (or lack of connections) between beliefs <em>and</em> their orientation towards their own beliefs or knowledge or authority. The article gives portraits of four teachers through open-ended surveys and interviews taken throughout their last year of coursework, during their student teaching, and during a seminar following their student teaching. How they come to know was a central construct, following Perry's study of college men and Belenky's study of women. Perry identified: </p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dualism - seeing the truth as coming from an authority</li>\n<li>Multiplism - recognition of a variety of opinions. Either everyone has a right to their opinion or there is one correct opinion that must be discovered, but the opinions are not analyzed.</li>\n<li>Relativism - the ability to see the relative merits of different perspectives and realize that not all perspectives are of equal merit</li>\n<li>Commitment - confirmation of a particular perspective based on the relative merits of various perspectives.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Belenky et al. identified:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>\"Silence\" (usually abused women, no thought on what knowledge is true)</li>\n<li>Received knowing - listening to the voice of others.</li>\n<li>Subjective knowledge - listening to one's own voice, quest for identity</li>\n<li>Procedural knowledge - applying reason</li>\n<li>constructed knowledge - integrating voices.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Sally - Seemed to exhibit dualism and received knowing, but when she began to listen to the voices of others, it confused her and she re-evaluated her commitment to teaching.</p>\n<p>Nancy - Primarily a received knower. Many of her beliefs were aligned with productive \"reform\" beliefs - multiple ways to solve problems, etc. - but she typically looked to others for affirmation and knowing what was right.</p>\n<p>Henry - authoritarian, relied on authority of particular others, suggesting dualism, and mostly did not tolerate others' views. So, his belief initial belief about technology is different from Greg's initial belief, even though they were both against it at the outset.</p>\n<p>Greg - Greg valued the opinions of others, suggesting Commitment stage. He weighed others opinions and he adjusted his beliefs based off of whether those beliefs aligned with his core beliefs, preparing students for the world.</p>",

BUT to do so, we must characterize the teacher’s practice that supports Algebraic culture</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>How the author conducts the study:</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; observations / recordings analyzed.
