The objective of the analysis was to determine new trends in educational practice in the form of new courses, course concentrations, and programs. New educational trends were primarily user-centered. Library educators should avoid placing too much reliance on the users' niche because it places them in an intermediary role. Information technology has had a devastating impact on intermediaries such as travel agents, realtors, and financial brokers. If librarians focus exclusively on users, they run the risk of becoming displaced. Instead, programs should stake out unclaimed or disputed areas such as the organization of information, content creation, authoritative information, and/or collection preservation. The paper concludes with the recommendation that ILS faculty should examine new content areas that schools are now offering and embark on new curricular opportunities that make sense in view of their view of the future, expertise on staff, available resources, and the resources they are able to secure to make changes at their institutions. The evolution of the definition of a DL is discussed. The author presents the results of a study that attempts to reduce conceptual ambiguity by identifying four representative models of DLs that are currently found online. The history of DL development is noted including the dynamic nature of sponsored research as the focus shifts from technology-oriented questions to more humancentered issues. Two important technological foundations for the future, metadata and metalanguages, are surveyed in terms of their relevancy to descriptive cataloging, and information retrieval. The digital library's relationship with LIS is explored, including the concepts of serving the needs of human information seekers, and extending the information related services regularly provided by libraries. This study examines qualifications and skills required of professional positions involved in digital resources, services, and technologies as changing aspects in academic libraries. Data was collected from job advertisements for digital library positions posted in College and Research Libraries News during the nine years from 1999 to 2007. The study verifies shifts in staffing needs and required qualifications with digital focus on collections, services, and technology applications in academic libraries. The results confirm that a digital librarian is an emerging position in academic libraries.
