            "abstractNote": "THEY are the biggest, the fastest, the most unconventional. They are easily the most complex machines coming out of major computer manufacturers, university laboratories and now even Silicon Valley start-up companies.  They are supercomputers, machines that can run circles around the quickest mainframes now made.   But supercomputers are in short supply, and so is the highly specialized talent used to design and operate them. ''The best number I've heard is that there are about 250 people in the United States who really understand the monsters,'' an executive of one of the nation's largest mainframe manufacturers said recently. ''And there's probably about an equal number of companies bidding for them.''   So acute is the shortage, in fact, that the Federal Government has stepped in. Last month the National Science Foundation said it would provide at least $200 million to create four supercomputer centers around the country, each equipped with a different kind of machine. The stated goal is to make the computers available to researchers for everything from designing airplane wings to simulating what happens to an automobile as it crashes.",
