Their aim, in part, is to provide students with knowledge of environmental issues from a variety of scientific perspectives so that the students can make up their own minds on these vital issues. This is what I call the promise, or intent, of environmental education and the leading documents in the discipline reflect this intent.\n\n I agree with these good intentions. Indeed, much of the current debate is not about intent, but rather the performance of environmental education. In other words, when children receive environmental education in the classroom based on curriculum materials or textbooks, or when they go to the school library to check out books about the environment, do they receive information which lives up to this promise or intent? The research record shows that they do not. There is a big gap between intent and performance when students are taught about environmental issues. I wanted to integrate the value of a case study in its ability to give people a common set of themes/ideas/examples that can integrate disciplines (simular to the implications of \"situating\"). \n.\nThis article highlights the relational and social value that stories can provide to an educational setting. \" In contrast to modernist Western narratives destined for children, in Native oral traditions stories that are told to children do not have an explicit moral at the end. That is not to say that the child does not learn from the story, but meaning has to be constructed by the audience.\" Allowing meaning to be constructed by a group, rather than having it explicit to the narrative, could offer one means of allowing a social group to define their educational experience while still maintaining a common direction - one challenge of a social learning system.
