"abstractNote": "Learning is acquiring new, or modifying and reinforcing, existing knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of information. The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals and some machines. Progress over time tends to follow learning curves. Learning is not compulsory; it is contextual. It does not happen all at once, but builds upon and is shaped by what we already know. To that end, learning may be viewed as a process, rather than a collection of factual and procedural knowledge. Learning produces changes in the organism and the changes produced are relatively permanent.[1]",

"abstractNote": "Increasingly, cracks are appearing in the capacity of communities, ecosystems, and landscapes to provide the goods and services that sustain our planet's well-being. The response from most quarters has been for \"more of the same\" that created the situation in the first place: more control, more intensification, and greater efficiency. \"Resilience thinking\" offers a different way of understanding the world and a new approach to managing resources. It embraces human and natural systems as complex entities continually adapting through cycles of change, and seeks to understand the qualities of a system that must be maintained or enhanced in order to achieve sustainability. It explains why greater efficiency by itself cannot solve resource problems and offers a constructive alternative that opens up options rather than closing them down. In Resilience Thinking, scientist Brian Walker and science writer David Salt present an accessible introduction to the emerging paradigm of resilience. The book arose out of appeals from colleagues in science and industry for a plainly written account of what resilience is all about and how a resilience approach differs from current practices. Rather than complicated theory, the book offers a conceptual overview along with five case studies of resilience thinking in the real world. It is an engaging and important work for anyone interested in managing risk in a complex world.",

"abstractNote": "A wheel turns because of its encounter with the surface of the road; spinning in the air it goes nowhere. Rubbing two sticks together produces heat and light; one stick alone is just a stick. In both cases, it is friction that produces movement, action, effect. Challenging the widespread view that globalization invariably signifies a \"clash\" of cultures, anthropologist Anna Tsing here develops friction in its place as a metaphor for the diverse and conflicting social interactions that make up our contemporary world. She focuses on one particular \"zone of awkward engagement\"--the rainforests of Indonesia--where in the 1980s and the 1990s capitalist interests increasingly reshaped the landscape not so much through corporate design as through awkward chains of legal and illegal entrepreneurs that wrested the land from previous claimants, creating resources for distant markets. In response, environmental movements arose to defend the rainforests and the communities of people who live in them. Not confined to a village, a province, or a nation, the social drama of the Indonesian rainforest includes local and national environmentalists, international science, North American investors, advocates for Brazilian rubber tappers, UN funding agencies, mountaineers, village elders, and urban students, among others--all combining in unpredictable, messy misunderstandings, but misunderstandings that sometimes work out.Providing a portfolio of methods to study global interconnections, Tsing shows how curious and creative cultural differences are in the grip of worldly encounter, and how much is overlooked in contemporary theories of the global.",

"extra": "Professional environmental educators promote quality environmental education based on high educational standards. Their aim, in part, is to provide students with knowledge of environmental issues from a variety of scientific perspectives so that the students can make up their own minds on these vital issues. This is what I call the promise, or intent, of environmental education and the leading documents in the discipline reflect this intent.\n\n I agree with these good intentions. Indeed, much of the current debate is not about intent, but rather the performance of environmental education. In other words, when children receive environmental education in the classroom based on curriculum materials or textbooks, or when they go to the school library to check out books about the environment, do they receive information which lives up to this promise or intent? The research record shows that they do not. There is a big gap between intent and performance when students are taught about environmental issues. This paper discusses my efforts to explore and define this gap and discusses my ideas for narrowing it.",

"abstractNote": "Completely Updated and RevisedThis revised edition of Peter Senge’s bestselling classic, The Fifth Discipline, is based on fifteen years of experience in putting the book’s ideas into practice. As Senge makes clear, in the long run the only sustainable competitive advantage is your organization’s ability to learn faster than the competition. The leadership stories in the book demonstrate the many ways that the core ideas in The Fifth Discipline, many of which seemed radical when first published in 1990, have become deeply integrated into people’s ways of seeing the world and their managerial practices. In The Fifth Discipline, Senge describes how companies can rid themselves of the learning “disabilities” that threaten their productivity and success by adopting the strategies of learning organizations—ones in which new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, collective aspiration is set free, and people are continually learning how to create results they truly desire. The updated and revised Currency edition of this business classic contains over one hundred pages of new material based on interviews with dozens of practitioners at companies like BP, Unilever, Intel, Ford, HP, Saudi Aramco, and organizations like Roca, Oxfam, and The World Bank. It features a new Foreword about the success Peter Senge has achieved with learning organizations since the book’s inception, as well as new chapters on Impetus (getting started), Strategies, Leaders’ New Work, Systems Citizens, and Frontiers for the Future. Mastering the disciplines Senge outlines in the book will:• Reignite the spark of genuine learning driven by people focused on what truly matters to them• Bridge teamwork into macro-creativity• Free you of confining assumptions and mindsets• Teach you to see the forest and the trees• End the struggle between work and personal timeFrom the Trade Paperback edition.",

They are “wicked” problems, whereas science has developed to deal with “tame” problems. Policy problems cannot be definitively described. Moreover, in a pluralistic society there is nothing like the undisputable public good; there is no objective definition of equity; policies that respond to social problems cannot be meaningfully correct or false; and it makes no sense to talk about “optimal solutions” to social problems unless severe qualifications are imposed first. Even worse, there are no “solutions” in the sense of definitive and objective answers.",

Specifically, the author refers to the work of Eliade (1960, 1963) in examining the nature of myth as a particular form of narrative while addressing some critiques to his analysis of Native cosmology. This discussion enables the author to construct a critique of Egan's (1986) theoretical model of the use of storytelling in education from a First Nations perspective.",

I wanted to integrate the value of a case study in its ability to give people a common set of themes/ideas/examples that can integrate disciplines (simular to the implications of \"situating\"). \n.\nThis article highlights the relational and social value that stories can provide to an educational setting. \" In contrast to modernist Western narratives destined for children, in Native oral traditions stories that are told to children do not have an explicit moral at the end. That is not to say that the child does not learn from the story, but meaning has to be constructed by the audience.\" Allowing meaning to be constructed by a group, rather than having it explicit to the narrative, could offer one means of allowing a social group to define their educational experience while still maintaining a common direction - one challenge of a social learning system. It expands more broadly on the nexus of epistemology and education between Western and Aboriginal cultures, which may provide a useful realm for further study - it suggests the latter is more built on social interaction to generate meaning from a range of evidences, while the former is more suited to a traditional linear curriculum.",

"abstractNote": "Three studies tested the hypothesis that the mere belief in having a social interaction with someone improves learning, more attention and higher arousal. Participants studied a passage on fever mechanisms. They entered a virtual reality (VR) environment and met an embodied agent. The participant either read aloud or silently, scripted questions on the fever passage. In the avatar-aloud and avatar-silent conditions, participants were told that the virtual representation was controlled by a person. The agent condition was told that the virtual representation was a computer program. All interactions within VR were held constant, but the avatar conditions exhibited better learning, more attention, and higher arousal. Further results suggest that this was not due to social belief per se, but rather in the belief of taking a socially relevant action.",
